Good luck to Archie. We all knew this day was coming.

Ugh, sometimes I really hate college basketball. All of the coach speak when they all talk of loving the university they're working for and never thinking of going somewhere else always ends up meaning nothing. Thought Archie was different, they always end up proving us wrong.

Word just came out that he took the Indiana job. Hope that was not right but I said days ago that, unless he said "No" when asked by the reporter our after our loss, his name was in play and he never removed it.

This is the point where UD fans can choose to act like mature adults or a screaming toddler. Archie did great things for UD and we should wish him luck at Indiana.
The best way to hold on to the recruits is to hire Kuwik or Griffin, but UD shouldn't hire somebody just to keep the recruits. Maybe this is why Kelsey backed out of UMass at the last minute.

JimBo: You are 100% correct. They are always looking towards their next job. After what he did for us, I wish him well. I hope this does not turn out as another BG fiasco at GT. I think that Archie liked UD and its environment and will speak highly of it to the players and any potential coaching candidates. It is a very good place to be.

I wish him well also. It's just frustrating because I want to believe these coaches when they tell their fanbase how much they love it there and have no interest in going anywhere else. I wanted to believe it this time, but I should know better. I wanted to believe this program was at a point where it's not considered a stepping stone, but Archie just proved that wrong once again. It was always a stepping stone for him, regardless of the coach speak.
On to the next coach to use this program as a springboard.
Sorry if I seem ungrateful for what he accomplished here, but I'm just ****ed off. **** Indiana. Always hated them and still do.

This is one of those situations where I am not surprised but still disappointed. Success like Dayton's recent run led by a young coach was always a recipe for a departure to a bigger, higher profile job, but there's always that hope that maybe this situation is somehow different.

i'm disappointed. i know there are a few jobs out there he was always at risk leaving for, but hehas to know this timing, with 5 recruitscoming in, is really bad for UD. same situation he came into and took him 2-3 years todig out. great opportunity for coaches, not so much for fans of the program. i don't want a big name. im sure hoping behind the scenes someone was being groomed for some continuity. i hate this Sh!t.

All I can say is that I hope he doesn't regret this in 4 years. If IU doesn't make a FF soon, the natives will get restless. Also hope we get to see Greek freak 2 in a UD uniform.

Probably most are gone. You might keep some if the primary assistant handling them gets the head coaching job.
Absolutely no knowledge other than tweets but Wright almost certainly goes elsewhere.

Why would we get a home and home with Indiana? P5 and Big 10 teams don't want to play us or any "mid majors" and risk getting embarrassed with a loss. He has to be of a different mindset now. At Dayton I think Archie had a lot to say but, if IU were to lose to Dayton, the IU fan base would be screaming. He may have lost some of his independence. Our fan base is vocal, but he is now in the Big Leagues.

The probability of the situation is that incoming freshmen class, who many were saying was the most talented in the history of the program, is going to break up and go elsewhere, and the new coach will be starting from scratch. Archie has taken care of his pocket book by leaving for IU, but probably also set this program back several years.

Our fan base is vocal, but he is now in the Big Leagues.

Because it might have been in his contract like it was in BG's.

Have to say, having met him and his dad, I truly believed he was a lifer. Not upset with him, as much as myself for believing it.

On the one hand I can't blame him but on the other it is terrible timing. Losing 4 seniors, 5 incoming freshmen, young roster that could lead to transfers. My biggest concern is that we could a roster in 2017-18 that is less talented than Archie's first season.

I'm not sold on any of our assistant coaches as being prepared to take over the helm but I think Sullivan needs to seriously consider one of them as AM's replacement. This recruiting class is so important it would be horrible to lose most if not all of them.
If not one of them, I think Anthony Grant should be a top candidate. The primary reason is I think he would stay and not look as this as a stepping stone. He had success at VCU and obviously has ties to the University.
The problem with a young top assistant is exactly what happened. The risk is high and the short/intermediate return can be high but the long term high is probably unattainable. It just doesn't make sense to do the same again unless it is one of the current assistants for continuity purposes.

Certainly possible...IMO, the European guys seem less committed and shaky to begin with. I obviously hope that he comes to UD though.

I'm not against them at all. I just have reservations one is prepared to be the HC. I don't recall there being a logical pecking order among the three. If one had stood out, I would say yes for sure.

Not sold on any assistants You do not hire based on keeping recruits. If they walk, they walk. Have to make the right hire and they chips fall where they may.

I think Sullivan needs to give this route serious consideration. Part of what has gotten and kept X and Butler at the NCAA Tournament level is continuity. Sean was an assistant to Matta, and Mack was an assistant to Sean. Same deal (mostly) at Butler going back to the Collier era. So, unless there's a "sure thing" in the unemployed coaches market, I say "promote from within" is a strategy worth considering.
That said, if 1 of those 3 get the job, then the other 2 are likely to bolt.

During these times I think about the quote "pain is inevitable...suffering is optional". We all feel the pain. I'll do my best to focus on the future...I think this thread so far has been as good as you can get...under these painful times.
Good job guys.

My guess is, regardless of who we hire, we can kiss Wright and Jordan Davis goodbye. Wouldn't surprise me to see Wright follow Archie to Indiana (unless the coach says no), but he's got the chops now to go "big-time." And Davis chose us over Elite Eight South Carolina. Both are the best in their respective states and can write their own ticket. The Czech hasn't signed and probably won't. I'm less sure about Carter and Pierce, but I'd say the odds are less than 50 percent we hang onto them.
Kostas on the other hand would be a transfer, I think. So if he had to sit another year, maybe he stays. Or maybe he goes to Europe.
Regardless, brace yourselves for a lot of "see ya later" stories.

Mid majors hire assistants. We're (hopefully) past that now. We need an experienced head coach.

Archie has elevated the program and for that I am thankful but I wish he wouldn't have acted like he was fully committed to UD. He even said one time "I would never cheat on my kids and look at other jobs". He could never live up to that comment. This is going to be a rough period. Sports are great if you're at the top of the food chain. College football unfortunately has a major impact on basketball which stinks and shouldn't have any bearing.

I'm with you. This isn't fun at all. I'll be showing my age but I kind of miss the days of Donoher. Yeah, he may have thrown in a few clunker seasons from time to time, but he was a consistent winner who you never had to worry about using the program as a springboard to something else. I really don't know if I want any more up and comers like the Millers, Will Wade, Shaka Smart, etc. etc. who consider every job early in their career as a personal tool.
I like the idea of Grant. I want someone who wants to turn UD basketball into a destination program. I wanted to believe Archie was that man, and I guess that makes me the fool, but I believe it can happen.

I said "would be" considered a transfer if he left. He's a partial qualifier who just spent a year at UD.
And I don't think posting my thoughts on this influences a recruit one way or the other. For that matter, I hope I'm wrong and they all stay. But more often than not, that simply isn't the case when coaches depart. Just ask Ladontae Hinton and Percy Gibson.

I admired Gregory for doing that. but in the end we didn't keep them anyway. Dayton didn't try to keep Gregory from leaving so he might as well have taken them with him. Henton might have helped him get off on the right foot at GTech.
Who know what Archie will do. I know one thing... I will pay my $10 tonight to watch Wright in the State finals. Truly sorry he had to get this news on the morning of such a huge game.

When the tweet from Woj first went out I think they were in a team meeting to inform them. Goodman and Jablonski both tweeted messages that said that. It seems to me that IU, UD, and Archie all did a good job coordinating the release of the information so that the players didn't find out on twitter.

I am get banned for this, but I have to say it. I am ****ed. While thankful that Archie was at Dayton and made the Flyer relevant again, I am afraid his leaving may set the program back 10+ years.
By many accounts he has a very good recruiting class coming in. If many of them decide to look elsewhere, what does this do to the program? Hire from within, perhaps but are the assistant coaches going to even stay or move to IU with Archie?
If we can keep the new recruits, great, but I don't believe Wright, Carter, Davis and Svoboda will come. This change is going to leave this team and program in a world of hurt for a number of years. If Archie had stayed through this coming season, I would feel differently, but this is the worse possible time.

You would hope Dayton put in a solid buyout into his contract to at least help contribute to the next coach's salary.

Should I copyright 'Little General' now or wait a few weeks?

Can't hate on Archie. Can't hate on him for stating he was loyal to UD...He was. If anyone believe otherwise, than you are the fool. It is a business. Money and opportunity talk. Does anyone expect a coach to come in, or even after a few years, and say that they are committed to school XYZ until something better comes along? Come on now. Any employee of a company is going to walk in and say they are fully committed until something better comes along that they can't refuse. Archie isn't a 50 year old coach on the downswing of his career...the guy is in his prime and if I were the rising star of a company at the age that he is, I would be a fool not to take another opportunity. Did I think it was going to be IU? No...I thought he would go bigger.
Recruits...some may stay...some may leave. UD will get by.
Assistant coaches....unless you know them personally or have interacted with them on the floor or in the locker room...I think any of us not in that position would have a hard time stating that any one of them is or isn't prepared to take over as head coach. The people that do know that are the coach's themselves as well as Neil and UD admin.
UD Administration...I trust them to make the right decisions to hire post Archie. I am more confident in this administration than I was the last time we went through this. The last time we went through this UD hit a home run. They can do it again.
Yes...this sucks as a UD fan. If you didn't think or know this was going to happen at some time...then I want what you are smoking. Archie was great for UD. I will be pulling for him at IU. I also know that the UD staff will do their homework and pick the right guy.

If we can keep the new recruits, great, but I don't believe Wright, Carter, Davis and Svoboda will come. This change is going to leave this team and program in a world of hurt for a number of years. If Archie had stayed through this coming season, I would feel differently, but this is the worse possible time.

If recent UD history is any indicator, we have upgraded our head coach each time in the last 3. So I would expect nothing less this time as a fan and as a recruit. A planned upgrade of the arena doesn't hurt either. So, let's be optimistic. And, I presume we have a home and away with IU coming up. My question is where are we with the assistant coaches??
