Coaches can't correct stupidity
If you watched vcu blow it, you saw how a coach can teach basics, techniques but can't eliminate stupid. Vcu up by 4 and sfa goes down, throws up a 3 and makes it and is fouled. Shooter makes the foul shot sending game to ot and vcu folds. This is the kind of stuff that must age coaches. Vcu eliminated.

Disagree somewhat. Shaka needed to settle his guys down. He failed to call off the frenzied chaos in the final seconds and it bit him.

I disagree too. Pretty much no player truly knows the game situation. His instinct is to not let the guy score. Shaka needed to be screaming to pack into the paint and let them shoot anything. Didn't even need to get in front of him.

In all fairness, the SFA player deserves an Oscar. I doubt he was fouled. But they are all coached to fake contact and he did and the refs bought it.
But still, why even get within three feet of him?
The only.....ONLY...thing that could have lost the game for VCU was a four point play. Probably the rarest of all basketball plays. And they blew it.

Complete BS. A player that does not know they are up 4 with seconds left!! Any basketball player with any sense from the 4th grade up knows not to foul in this situation or even come close to the shooter. They should have laid down the red carpet for a free layup in that situation.

VCU was 7 for 7 from the free throw line in the first 39 1/2 minutes of the game. In the last 30 seconds they go 0 for 4. That's a choke.
In these crazy NCAA games, a 5 point lead is a one possession game. Guy makes a 3pt and is fouled and gets the call. The opposing coach goes bananas and gets T. Another free throw and the ball. You can't make this stuff up. It actually happens.
Shaka had to coach to the last second and he didn't.

He called off the trapping press that was working so well in the middle of the second half too. That allowed SFA to get their bearings back. As for selling the last foul the VCU player shouldn't have been within 5 feet of the shooter! This board would have blown up

I was at the game and noticed VCU lowered its intensity with 6 minutes to go in the game. This, more than the 4 point play, was the primary cause for the loss.

Sometimes it is just destiny…… The only more unbelievable play was the SFA possession before that… where the guy was falling out of bounds as the shot clock was about to expire and makes a weak pass to an unsuspecting player, who just tosses it at the basket… and it goes in….
Hard to change fate…… It was just meant to be

if you replay it closely there was no foul. Lewis didn't touch him, the guy flopped and got the call. Lewis says to the official ... "I didn't touch him".

If you are on the court in a Division 1 game and you don't know the time and score, well let's just say you aren't a Division 1 player. You aren't even a high school player.
The hardes thing in coaching at the D1 level is actually getting kids to do what they should, and what you talk about. Obviously that bit VCU. The idea that coaches have much to do with what happened makes the game seem like stratomatic.
The coaching decision is what was referenced earlier - calling off the trapping press that resulted in the 20-3 run. Make them burn you in it a few times before you back out of it, or get up more than 20 before you call it off.
Either way, make 1 of 4 free throws in last 30 seconds or don't brain fart and you win.

You're probably right, but in that situation, you make sure you stay in front of the shooter and do not move forward on him. This was probably a coaching error as he needed to make that clear to his players. Don't know what was told to the players so I can't say for sure, but either Smart or Lewis made a mistake that will haunt them for a long time. VCU should've been happy to give them a free outside shot at that point.

Agree. I watched it several times and there was no foul. And the official couldn't have seen any contact either based on his position. He saw the guy fall down and called a foul. VCU got screwed. But I agree the defensive player shouldn't have been anywhere neat the shooter.

One of our guys thought the game was tied, when we were up one with 3.8 to go. It can happen to anyone.

If I recall, the play for SF austin happened after a timeout. The 3.8 seconds was immediately after a FG and OSU immediately inbounds the ball. The difference between a tie game and 1 point game had no effect on how you defend so it really doesn't matter. All AM had to do was tell them two things, what to do if we score and what to do if we don't. Smart had one thing to tell his players, ease up and don't foul.

I'm betting Fisher told Weber and co they were out of TOs. I'm betting Shaka said were up four so avoid fouls. Crazy things happen when the heat is on.
