Welcome to the Family Zed Key!
https://twitter.com/iamzedkey/status...64783828701522
This will be the Ohio State transfer's final collegiate season.
The 6'8" 230 pound forward will definitely bring some physicality and toughness to the front court... Whether he starts or comes off the bench is TBD
In sort of limited minutes (for some reason) he's put up solid numbers... 4 years, 121 GP, 7.5 RPG 5 RPG in only 17 MPG.
I like the comparison in another thread, maybe a taller, more advanced Kendall Pollard… Maybe a Josh Cunningham type.

Welcome, Zed!
Not sure I see the Pollard comparison. Pollard had a lot of slasher in his game. You will get next to no dribble drive from Zed Key. I think Cunningham/Perryman make more sense.
Key is definitely a talent upgrade and should fare well in the A10. I'm not sure I love the fit. I think spacing is a premium and crucial in contemporary basketball. Key will be pretty paintbound. I don't think you can play Jack and Key together.
That said, it's another piece that can contribute, and the 2024-25 roster puzzle still has more pieces to be added (and removed).

I think Key could be the perfect compliment to DaRon inside, if Deuce sticks around. If not, he still gives us a guy who can play with a level of physicality that not many A10 teams can match.

He’s a better rebounder with less of a perimeter game than Pollard or even Cunningham. He’s a banger in the post. Potentially the most physically post prescence in a longe time
For an A10 comparison think Mo Alie-Cox
He’s also probably the most productive stats wise power conference player that I can ever remember. Sibert, Watson, Perry, Sanford were pretty quiet

Agree on the guard.
Would love to add a 4, too, though I suppose it depends on what Simon is.
I love Santos, but I'd love the roster flexibility a big, long win would bring.
I realize we can't have it all, but maybe you go get a long wing from high school (or after their first college year). Somebody that doesn't necessarily require a bunch of minutes.

Both of those players combined don't have the physicality that Zed brings. Cripe looked worse every time he took the court, and Binnie shied away from contact anyhow. Not this guy.

He's not a replacement for Holmes. Totally different players.
I like Jack, but I really hope all our eggs at the 5 aren't in that basket. I'd like to see us at least get another guy who is 6'10" or bigger with some experience and/or upside, (I assume DHII will be a pro next year). With that said, there is nothing about this staff's history that leads me to believe Jack won't make a big jump between this and next year.

Yeah, I get that. Do you think Key knows Holmes is back and that is part of the reason he committed?
Or do you think he knows Holmes is gone and he can play a bigger role and that was part of his decision?

I can't ever remember getting a power 6 big man transfer with stats like his.
Chase Johnson, Jordy Tshimanga, and Alex Gavrilovich didn't have his stats.
I agree, potentially the most physical post prescence we have had in a while, Jordy, Big Steve, and Cunningham come to mind.

Why would I have an f'n clue either way? I don't think Homes even knows what he is doing for sure next year, that all depends on the combine and the feedback he gets. My guess is that whatever Homes situation ends up being, Key wants to play somewhere where he has a chance to actually play impactful minutes. He's on the team, the rest will be revealed in due time.
Edit: I guess it is possible that Key just took the opportunity to play for a better program.

Depending on how closely he matches his press clippings, Marvel Allen could be that guard, though he’s more of a 2-3 than a 1-2 (a la Ray Springer, Ramod Marshall, etc.).

If that’s the case, then one scenario I can see unfolding (if Deuce returns) is Zed starting at the 4, Nate sliding over to the 3, and Isaac spelling Zed and Deuce (since both Isaac and Zed have reputations for being foul prone).

Welcome Zed! Good points T-Bone 84, as far as flexibility. I'm really hoping that Deuce comes back (I don't think he will) but, what we lacked we have strengthened! Basketball is still a game of 'he who controls the paint, controls the game'. We have good coverage between positions 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5. The one who needs to start this year is Brea. Too many pluses to his game to come off of the bench (the minus being defense which he improved a lot this year). He and Cheeks are the keys to me if Deuce moves on. Go Flyers!

If DaRon is NBA bound next season, then I think the 24-25 offense runs through Brea.

Sometimes it seems like we, and I use we because I am guilty of it too, have this attitude of entitlement where we think he should know what is going on in everybody's head in real time, injuries, what does this mean what does that mean. I know one thing for sure, well prior to the first game, we will know who is on the roster and who is not.

Asked Sunday what he wanted to find in a school, Key said, “ First is development. I want to be able to develop my game a little bit more on the perimeter. Family atmosphere is another biggie. I had that here at Ohio State. I don’t want to go somewhere else where it’s not a family atmosphere. That’s big.”

I had that here at Ohio State. I don’t want to go somewhere else where it’s not a family atmosphere. That’s big.”
The Toppin, Camara, Holmes effect!!!

I watched an interview with Key, seemed like he had a real good attitude...was respectful, well-mannered, I didn't detect any issues with his personality. Some of these guys can be a problem with that type of stuff. I don't think there will be any issues with hustle, being coachable, etc.

AG doesn't go after players who are "me" first.

The more I think about this the more I wonder if this may be the 24-25 Cheeks, as in a guy they saw in person and took note of.
In last year's exhibition against Ohio State, Key didn't exactly light the world on fire (3 points, 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block), but, of course, they recruited Key fairly aggressively out of high school as well.
It seems the staff is probably pretty familiar with who Zed Key is and what he can do on the basketball court. That adds a little confidence in what we're getting.

Exactly the type of player the program needs...even if it's for one year.

Kobe Elvis says hi!
Also makes me wonder if he comes back now with Brea gone. To my knowledge he didn't have a big X farewell speech like Brea did, which leads me to think the UD door is still open for him.

Don't get caught standing in a puddle of water!
We all know how fickle this environment of basketball is today. We have some posters who can make a pretty good case for Holmes to return. Stay tuned for this to go down to the wire.

Super excited about Zed. But the mention of Pollard and Cunningham brought back a ton of memories!

He's a better BB player than Pollard, imo, but not the better athlete and he's a better athlete than Cunningham and equally as productive as a player.Zed can play.

I don't know if anyone else is thinking this or not, but for me, the "Welcome to the Family" title means very little today. The family is gone and been replaced by big money!

I hear you man. I wish my employees, who make a bunch of money for me, would consider themselves my family and not want to be paid, but such is life.

Big money goes around the world
Big money underground
Big money got a mighty voice
Big money make no sound
Big money pull a million strings
Big money hold the prize
Big money weave a mighty web
Big money draw the flies

Agree… However do you give your employees unlimited free work gear and shoes, a stipend for food and rent, free healthcare and gym memberships as well as free access to advanced educational opportunities with free books and supplies as well as a tutor to help through studies? Also a renovated break room with all the latest gadgets and tech? Additionally work paid for outings, and support networks for employee’s parents who call about them not getting assigned projects?
Absolutely needs to be some equity in college athletics but to claim athletes receive no compensation is not accurate.
