In the past, I do not recall the Thursday/Saturday or Friday/Sunday schedule for a team changing until the Final 4.
Kentucky, Michigan, Gonzaga, and Loyola all got 1 extra day of rest.
Kansas State, TAMU, FSU, and Nevada all got 1 less day of rest.
Seemed very unfair.

Even so, I do not see why the schedule had to change.
Keep all the Thursday pods in the same regions, same for Fridays.

Loyola is an amazing story, so I won't rehash it.
Kansas St going against the big ugly blue was story #2. Undersized, undermanned and disrespected they pull it off at crunch time. Their best player did not play, then so much foul trouble, they play the last few minutes, when they won the game, with five guards. To see the experience and athleticism and confidence of those much smaller, unheralded kids pull it off, was magic. When they spread the court, and that kid made the winning layup between and over very tall McDonald All-Americans was an all-time NCAA moment.
Loyola, K State and Nevada showed you do not have to be huge if you are athletic and quick and can shoot and play D.

I did not see the game but did the Kentucky players and Calipari really walk off the court after the loss without shaking hands with the winner?

It's never been consistent and I don't anticipate it ever will. If it were to align that way somehow, it would just be pure coincidence.
Once you get past 3 days rest, it's really irrelevant, which is why you don't hear much chirping about it, expect for Calipari who was just looking for anything to chirp about.

No. They all lined up to shake hands, but by the time they got thru the coaches, the KState players were still celebrating on the court.
I am not a Calipari or UK apologist, but that was whole to do about nothing. Just garbage, social media journalism.

It seems kind of obvious - there are several players in this game that were recruited by UD.

For those of us who think these young guys cannot play a whole game, Graham, the stud guard on Kansas, missed only 11 minutes out of the last 700+ minutes played by his team. For the 36 games this year, his average rest time per game was 2.4 minutes.

The more you watch this tourney the more you realize how many coaches lean on players to play major minutes. Some on this board make it seem like AG was this outlier but its a lot more common than you think.

That Slovak kid on Cuse is impressive for a frosh. At 6'9" and 180 he sort of disproves the you need weight and muscle theory. When you have great floor intelligence and a long reach he makes it happen.

The thing is, during the BG era, there was some brainwashing going on that no player should play more than 30-32 minutes a game (and his substitution patterns were consistent with that belief). Then, AM had the year of The Magnificent Seven, and that pretty much threw substitution patterns out the window. And finally, last year, AG had the option of playing more guys, but because of issues with in-game performance, bad practice habits, attitude, injury, immaturity, etc., he chose to use only about 2/3 of the available roster.
In many ways, it’s sort of a throwback to the Donoher era, when the best players (Paxson, Chapman, Johnny D, Smitty & Sly, etc.) would play 35+ minutes per game. Your best player at 80% is better than his sub at 100%, so you play your best players as much as you can.

I would not use this year’s team as a great example of playing a lot of minutes with a short bench. The team often played poorly during the last four minutes of each half. The top scorers seemed too fade at the end of the season.
When a player does play a lot of minutes, they often sacrifice quite a bit on defense.
Yes, you do find some teams with amazing players who can at a high level for 40 minutes, but into today’s physical game, a rotation of players gives an advantage.

This is a very good point... especially when you consider our point guard was a young freshman who nearly took a prep year instead of coming here, our two guard was a freshman, our power forward was a sophomore who played 54 minutes the year before, and our center was an undersized guy who had played 11 games in the last two years and had ankle, knee and shoulder surgeries in that time.
Not counting senior Darrell Davis, 4 or our 5 starters played a total of 214 minutes of college basketball in the two years prior to this one. That’s crazy.
That’s a lot different than say, a John Chaney Temple team, or a typical Martelli St. Joe team.

I felt sorry for the Purdue kids. You work your tail off to get this far, and then you have to play without your big stud, who helped get you this far. His backup was a nice defender, but had no offense or rebounding.

Texas Tech plays a lot like UD's Elite Eight run. Solid team defense, protect the glass, unselfish with the ball and everybody fits a roll. Maybe Purdue beats them with their big guy, I don't know, but I do like how Tech plays. Gritty and confident.

I felt the same way Chris Wright's freshman year when he got hurt and it jeopardized our NCAA chances!
Chris broke his ankle midway through the season. UD was 13-1 before his injury and 9-9 after. The Flyers played in the NIT and Wright returned in time to play in the second and third games. He averaged double figures in the win over Illinois St. and the loss to Ohio St.

If you're playing an up tempo system like Coach Grant says he wants to run you're not going to play your starters nearly 40 minutes.
Because some guys in some systems play 40 minutes doesn't mean that everyone can. They're 18-22 year old kids, not robots.
Additionally when AG gets this thing up and running presumably freshman won't be thrown into the fire like this year. I think the dream would be to get them some action off the bench before handing them the keys

That is the second time in the Loyola game a player has passed the ball to himself with no whistle. That is a travel. Did they change the rule?

From the rule book - If it was a "try" (as in a shot), did not hit anything (i.e air ball), and the shooter then caught the ball - it is not traveling. The key is that it must be a "try".

Speaking of “what might have been”, Moser was Associate Head Coach under Rick Majerus at SLU from 2008-11, when he took the Loyola job. Majerus only coached 1 more season at SLU before he became so ill that he had to step-down, and hand the program over to Jim Crews. SLU is still trying to recover from that twist of fate.

The Ramblers know how to get into the paint and either finish or kick it out. It is not complicated and they do it well. I would not be surprised to see them take all the marbles.

Loyola is a great story. It tells me that a team like UD CAN make it to the final four.
I think UD could have been that team last year if Big Steve didn't pass away and Cunningham didn't get hurt. There is some luck involved but a team just needs to gel at the right time and play as a team...

They changed the rule, like 10 years ago. It’s now subjective based on the referee’s discretion - if he deems it a legitimate shot attempt, it’s not a travel.

Random thought that just hit me this morning. Kansas State’s mascot is a Wildcat. In order for K-State to reach last night’s game against Loyola, they had to beat Kentucky, whose mascot is a Wildcat. In order to reach that game, in their first round game, Kentucky had to beat Davidson, whose mascot is a Wildcat. And, if Buffalo hadn’t busted brackets a week ago, Kentucky would have had to beat Arizona to reach the Sweet Sixteen, and Arizona’s mascot is a Wildcat.
4 teams whose mascot is a Wildcat, all on the same side of the same bracket in the same Region. Kind of odd.

Everybody and their brother is going to be after that guy. Only question is how high can he go?
And what happens if they win it all? I hope they do, stick it to the Power5/BE

Loyola is a great story and team. They have at least 4 on the floor at all times who can space the floor and dribble drive, kick it out or finish at the rim. My former HS teammate was the HS coach in Kansas (Blue Valley Northwest) for Clayton Custer and Ben Richardson and these kids can play. Go Ramblers.

As much as the NCAA is always going to push, manipulate, hope for, etc. a marquee power 5 final four, I bet they are secretly praying for Loyola to win it all. They are in desperate need of a complete feel good story. "See, Div 1 college basketball is a level playing field." "Shoe companies, agents, AAU coaches are not influencing NCAA basketball." Blah blah blah.

Exactly...they have the right balance of players who can dribble penetrate and then they have shooters planted outside the three-line. It is not all that difficult. As I have posited in previous posts, the key to offense today is dribble penetration. When you complement that with two or three shooters planted outside, it becomes a very successful strategy. On top of that, the Ramblers have some penetrating guards who can finish in the paint. Great post TA111!

The thing I am most impressed with is their ability to handle the physical play. In spite of the brutish brawling of teams like K-state they still played reasonable basketball. They didn't degrade their play to the low level of their opponent..... as opposed to the brawl between Michigan and Florida State... which was absolutely unwatchable....

In addition to their exceptional ball handling and dribble drive skills, you RARELY see them called for a charging foul. A team I could watch 24/7. That's basketball!

What about the phantom foul on Seton Hall that sealed the deal for Michigan in the title game in 1989?

Couple storylines.
There isn't a single 1 and done player left in the tourney and only 1 projected lottery pick (Bridges). Wagner is the only other projected 1st rounder and he's at the end of round 1.
Transfers helping lead the way. Matthews (UK), Newman (MissSt), Custer (ISU), Townes (FDU).

6. 1984 Dayton Flyers –*The Flyers were led by the exceptional play of their all-time leading scorer Roosevelt Chapman, who put the Flyers*on his back and carried them all the way to the Regional Final. Dayton’s road started with an upset of LSU and then a high scoring win over highly-rated Oklahoma, a game in which Chapman scored 41 points. Next up came the favored*Washington Huskies and once again the Flyers*stepped up to advance to the Elite*Eight where they ran into eventual National Champions...

Michigan's offense has been miss a shot and let Wagner score on the putback. Without Wagner Michigan is down 20 at half

Chicago played a nice 3/4 of a game. But in the last 10 minutes they made mistake after mistake as you might expect an 11 seed might do Under Pressure. Congratulations to them for their final four appearance.

In my opinion no rules change in the last 30 years has done more to help level the playing field of CBB between the haves- and have-nots than the 3-pt arc. Not just as a weapon to spark an incredible comeback, but as a tool to design your offense around, to recruit for, and use as a main focal point of your program. There are only so many big burly bodies in D-I that are impact players and they all go to the blue bloods of CBB. Much of being a dominating interior player is DNA -- your physical size you can thank mom and dad for. The 3-pt arc however is a weapon for players not born to the lottery of life, and many of those players go to the non P5 schools. And since 3pt shooting is not contingent upon a lot of physical God-given advantages, it rewards players that practice it as a skill with repetition. Its much easier to be just as good a 3-pt shooter as a Duke guard than it is to be an interior player as good as a Duke forward or center.
The 3pt shot played prominent roles in Dayton's entire 1990 season and upset of #5 Illinois, and #11 Ohio State/#3 Syracuse in 2014. Were Norm Grevey available vs #4 Arkansas, we probably win that game too. And in all of these games -- on paper -- we had less talent.
One last thing: Im not sure the 3-pt shot is as easy as we think. In a lot of cases I think CBB players overestimate their own shooting prowess and take too many ill-advised treys -- including wide open ones. If you are a poor 3-pt shooter, its a bad shot whether guarded or not. We saw that firsthand w/the Flyers this year.
|
If I am remembering the stats from last night..... Nova took 33 shots in the first half and 26 were 3 pointers.... of which they made 13.... IMHO, that is way too many treys for a whole game, no less the national semifinals of the NCAA.
I felt like I was watching a pickup game at the YMCA at a 30 and over league....
Certainly not any fun to watch that unless it is your team that is making all those shots.
I agree with everything Chris said, but..... not toooo much of a stretch to say that the trey is far too easy a shot ...at least for Nova.

It's easy to hate Michigan football and Harbaugh, but even this Buckeye football fan finds it difficult not to love Michigan basketball and Beilein.

Paschall was a brute at Fordham. His transfer worked out very well for him.
Severe never found a shot that was out of his liking. When he was on the floor, the Fordham team stopped and watched him shoot all game.

“Love” is a little too strong of a word for me, but I do like Beilein, and I generally like how his teams play. More emphasis on ball movement and finding the open man. Less one-on-one and “gene pool” athleticism.

Villanova is unbeatable when they are drilling 3's like they were last night...they set the record for the most 3's in a final 4 game with still several minutes left in the 1st half.
Can they produce a repeat performance on Monday?

I thought that the refs favored Villanova overall by around 5 calls, but Villanova played very well.
And I don't care if the refs favored Villanova, the p5 can take a hike, the p5 get all the breaks in every other single aspect of college basketball.
The p5 can cry me a river.
I do wonder what happens with this FBI investigation regarding Villanova. Villanova coaches were mentioned in that investigation regarding illegal payments.
