With the exception of allowing so many offensive rebounds, our defense has been pretty impressive through ~35 minutes.

That was a disappointing four-point swing with Smith getting blocked and VCU rushing down for a layup. **** it.

This is a game we needed Josh Cunningham. Mikesell is totally overmatched out there. He has one rebound and two points. Meanwhile VCU up on the boards 36-22.

Darrell with a horrible turnover.
He simply listened to the play and didn't bother looking for a defender guarding it. We run that play repeatedly and VCU knew it was coming.

My goodness: at some point maybe we'll box out on defense. We're playing such solid defense until they shoot. VCU's best offense is a missed shot.

Twice now on a replay where Mikesell looked like he got beat, he had indeed put a body on someone, but VCU had two guys on the back side and he can not box them both out. But he still needs to muscle up better.

He can't because CC would probably be useless on defense with 4 fouls. Probably better when on D to have SS, KD, DD in there. He'll have to play offense defense with him.

Currently more than one-third of VCU's points are second chance points. You make it awfully difficult on yourself if you give your opponent so many additional opportunities. VCU's too good to let that happen.

If I have to point to one play it was KP blowing a wide open layup by trying to dunk. He missed it and everything after that turned against UD.

Yep, when Crosby is your backup, you need to let Scooch play to his 3rd in a game like this. Had he stayed in, we might have held that lead to the half and it would've been a different game.

I don't know which coach basically started the "You must sit a player when he picks up his second foul in the first half" rule, but I wish I had a DeLorean so I could find him and punch him.

KP fouling with 2 seconds in half, then misses dunk and transition bucket then misses bunny and another transition conversion. That's 10 points right there.

Perhaps even more disappointing is he missed two more in-close shots not too long after that. That was a rough stretch, but it started with that flubbed dunk.

Where did that lead go when SS was out? So yes.

Scooch only has 3 fouls(maybe four now in garbage time) so it means you probably wasted at least 5 minutes of him for Crosby. Yes, that could've been a big difference because they might have built a bigger lead and kept momentum.

We've been abused on the glass and Mikesell and Miller have taken the brunt. But Pollard deserves as much as anyone. He has been soft, soft, soft tonight.

As much as KP brings to this team, rebounding has never really been one of those things.

Had to go with Larry & Bucky on AA513 over the Southwest tonight. Other than poor 2nd half FT shooting, absolutely no boxing out, Crosby playing with his hair on fire, Kendall not making a layup, and DD hitting nothing besides one prayer, sounds like things went swimmingly. I am forcing myself to believe that Josh will be back, would have made the difference tonight, and WILL make the difference on Senior Night in the rematch.

Archie has to let Scoochie play with 2 fouls. If you cant trust Scoochie with 2 fouls you will never trust anyone.

Rebounds are now 41-23. Maybe we have had a worse rebounding game, but it has been a long time.

You don't trust bigs with 2 fouls. You certainly should be able to depend on your great senior PG to keep away from them. Even if he gets his 3rd, then you sit him and use JC more in the 2nd half. But JC in there for 8 minutes or whatever when you know the momentum is going to change in a huge game, you should take the chance IMO.

Sounds like there was once again success with the press. But once again too late before trying it. Or did our foul situation not make it viable when we first went down by 8? Or 11?

Worries me that Scooch had to play the entire 2nd half because of the ineptness of Crosby, because he is going to be needed for the Fordham game on Tuesday.

I think if there's ever a time to show that trust, this was the time, too: a good lead you want to maintain on the road against the team you're likely going to battle for the regular season top spot. Even VCU's defense changed with Crosby in the game: VCU pulled back more, and it seemed like with them settled back from the start we weren't finding those openings for easy baskets like we were when they were putting a little pressure on Smith.

Yes terrible defensive rebounding.
But the phantom offensive foul on Scoochie up 29-21 killed Dayton. The referee who called it was 20 feet away and his view was blocked by 3 players. There was a ref 2 feet away. It was a horrific call.
Yes terrible defensive rebounding.
I don't understand why Archie plays Mikesell as safety with 5 seconds to go down 3. If they hit the home run, so be it. Need to double team Lewis. Poorly designed defense from Archie.

Agreed. But why not leave SS in? It was close to the half, and this was such a big game. Agree?

This is a clear example of hindsight is 20/20. He had no choice but to put in Crosby, I do agree that at some point he should have went back to scooch in the first half though when Crosby stunk it up.

Not disputing that. It wasn't his call to make, due to positioning. But the refs didn't create the rebound differential or the 2nd chance points differential. Lost this one on the glass. Missed Josh and (RIP) Big Steve tonight.

I find it hard to believe that KD can't take over as PG when Scooch sits in a big game. Change the lineup to make it bigger, KD, CC, RM, XW and KP. Sure couldn't have hurt in this one since we needed all the size possible for boards.

Never liked that kind of argument T. We were getting killed on the boards when we built the 10 point lead. It was clear we had other answers to keep us 10 points better to that point. So then taking SS out with a phantom foul changes everything. You have to keep rolling when Big Mo(not Cox) is on your side.
