Saint Joseph's Game Thread
If we can win in Kingston and break the curse without Kendall Pollard, we can go into Philly and beat likely the 2nd best team in the A10 who has had our number recently... Let's take command of the conference with a victory on Wednesday!
Game is at 6 PM on Wednesday and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network
Starting Lineup:
G 1 Shavar Newkirk 6’0” 175 SO New York, NY
G 2 Aaron Brown 6’5” 223 SR Darby, PA
F 43 DeAndre’ Bembry 6’6” 210 JR Charlotte, NC
F 15 Isaiah Miles 6’7” 216 SR Baltimore, MD
F 24 Pierfrancesco Oliva 6’8” 207 FR Taranto, Italy
Bembry and Miles are having awesome years... both playing at 1st Team All-A10 level... We must contain them! I suspect Cooke & Pierre to be on both.
Let's hope #25 is ready to play!
I Believe! Go UD!

UD and St Joe's got a plug from Jim Nantz during the Pebble Beach Pro-AM today. Thought that was kind of neat. I am not enjoying the 6PM start time. I am guessing this was to accommodate for TV.

St. Joe's game should be the final Wednesday game of the season for the Flyers. 2 more Tuesday games in the regular season but no more Wednesday affairs. Won't have to play Wednesday (or Thursday) in the A10 Tourney. And no Wednesday games in the NCAA Tourney unless the Selection Committe decides to pull an even bigger crime than last year. Would need a bad stumble down the stretch for that to even be a remote possibility though. Can't even think about scenarios worse than that.

According to kenpom, St. Joe's wins 65% of the time this game winning 72-68. Sagarin predictor says St. Joe's wins 56% and by 1.6 points.
Statically much much more difficult to beat @ St. Joe's #35 (kenpom) than beating Villanova, Kansas, or Oklahoma at UD Arena. In fact statically equivalent beating #70 @St. Bonnie's as beating Villanova, etc. at UD Arena.
Tough game for Dayton. I will not be upset if UD loses.

An A10 blogger included it in an assessment of St. Joe's so I figured it was close enough.

March feel to tonights game. While I still consider Joe's to be a bit of a paper tiger I think this is a clash of 2 of the 3 titans in this league. Need Steve to show up,Charles to score in bunches, Scoochie to be a solid floor general with no more then 2 turnovers, Dyshawn to be Dyshawn and make the free throws. Let Bembry and Miles get theirs and shut down everyone else.

Key to tonight's game is TO's. Can't have more than 12 turnovers. Value the ball.

You can't paint all turnovers with the same brush! The easiest category of turnovers that can be minimized is traveling.
Ball movement with the objective of creating space for a shot or penetration
comes with a greater risk of turnover, but increases scoring potential. I assume by "value the ball," you are referring to getting one's pocket picked or losing the handle. Totally agree!

Probably smart but no Kendall tonight

Kendall Pollard will not play tonight for @DaytonMBB. Archie told Larry Hansgen in pregame interview.

And there's a timeout that I'm pretty sure is to yank Kyle Davis.
Edit: He has not come out ready to play for the last 2 or 3 games.

we will not win this game if Dayton is called for 2x the fouls. 6 fouls on Dayton and 3 on St. Joe's with 7:18 to go ...
Illegal Screen on Sam was so weak; Big Steve got all ball.

If we shoot 20% from 3 for the game, we'll lose. Unless we stop now and don't take any more.

Brambly two hand shove of Cooke who had position for the offensive rebound. Then cooke called for reach. Seriously. Just replayed it.
Ball don't lie on the miss of the 1/1.

No free throws through 19 minutes? How is that possible, as aggressive as SJU plays????

StJ finally with 7 fouls, but if you're shooting 3s all night, you won't draw a lot of fouls.

Because Dayton
needs points and Mikesell can hit a three while Williams can merely shoot the three.

Could be worse. Need to cut down on fouls (though some were bogus I have to say) and and an offense there have been some odd turnovers where they just lose ball, slip, etc.

Gonna be hard to win when the refs won't let you play any defense, and the other team can do whatever they want....

2/13 from 3 or 15% not going to get it done. Dayton +1 on rebounds, but -3 on turnovers so -2 possessions; shooting horribly.
When drive not getting the calls whereas St. Joe's is.
Floor is awful. I would't take the court in the 2H if it is as bad as it appears on tv.
Only down -9 with horrible shooting, bad turnovers, and not getting a call = not as bad as it could be.

No Cooke, no Pollard, no Steve, no Sam. We tried to compete the last 8 minutes with the likes of Mikesell, Wehrli; and Kyle guarding Bembry, and no offensive presence under the basket aside from Pierre. That group will not get it done on either end.

More quick passing, less dribbling, hope Steve can stay out of Foul trouble because he is the key to this game. With KP available, we wouldn't have had to go to BW for that many minutes. BW in the game is not good sign this early. Hope Archie has some effective half time adjustments to get our transition game going.

If nothing else, put XW in the game to at least foul Bembry. I'd rather see him at the FT line than putting up easy FGs(for him).

I don't know if Steve is THE key to the game, but we need an inside presence in the 2nd half, and he's the most likely candidate with Kendall on the DL tonight.

Alberto, weak response.
22 seconds left (as my post stated) and St. Joe's has the ball holding for the last shot. Why again is Mikesell in and not Williams? Nothing to do with shooting ....

missing Kendall as SJ is forcing the Flyers to make plays off the bounce, an area that Kendall excels. Need to create some offense with defense.

At 8:37 we were up 20-19, then Archie subbed the likes of Crosby and Mikesell and we lost the lead and were outscored 17-7. Seven points in almost 12 minutes.
We miss Pollard for his inside game and for the fouls he could give.

Halftime Adjustment:
Switch to the 3/4 inch cleats to deal with the terrible turf conditions. Lots of sliding around.

Needs to go strong to the bucket and if contact, then circus.
We get down 15 and over. Need to score here.
They are shooting 13/23 from 2. Need to put Big Steve in now.

This team is not playing for the good shot. Not enough passing of the ball. KD gives us a little momentum and then gives it back.

Playing as bad as they have all season. Completely out of sync on both ends. Need to use ball movement on offense rather than trying to do too much with the dribble. U-G-L-Y

Not boxing out and going after rebound, serious lack of effort ...
How is Big Steve not in the game.
