I'm definitely liking our chances in the last two minutes of blowouts.

This is fiscal responsibility at its finest. I wonder how the savings will be spent.

How are we defining “preferred walk on” these days? They get a roster spot without trying out? Increased odds of being promoted to full scholarship if one is available?
I know we carry 3-4 walk ins for practice purposes anyway. I trust we are still pursuing top prospects to fill remaining open scholarships for upcoming season. That’s the kind of announcement we all prefer. Been quiet since last couple transfers (Bennett & Jack).

I assume with some uncertainty surrounding exiting players (NBA, transfers, etc) that is now a part of NCAA sports, this is a way to persuade players to come in with the hopes of receiving a scholarship if a spot is available their first year, or perhaps their second year if not.
I would also assume this means if you are a standard walk-on, you should basically plan on having virtually no chance of a 'ship ever, unless there some incredibly rare and unforeseen events at play. And, play time would almost undoubtedly be divvied up amongst the preferred walk-ons, too. Basically, assume you are a warm practice body and not much more.
Of course, I'm spitballing...

your spitball was good. A preferred walk-on can mean a lot of things and may not mean the same thing to two different coaches. Known: Coming in there is not evidence that a scholarship is warranted at that time (there is no guarantee or pecking order should one become available); but there is enough talent, effort, skill to think that if they went to a school they would clearly be accepted as a walk-on by the coach/es (this is how many coach's sons become walk-ons); there is a desire to be part of the team (player) and an explanation of expectations (coach); Unknowns: could a player blossom over the years (e.g. Colt McCoy was originally supposed to be a preferred walk-on at Texas); Could the needs become such and the players effort demonstrate a scholarship is the right thing (Wehrli).
The biggest benefit of the preferred status for a team is that they are on campus now and working out with the team now.

I know next to nothing about Evan Dickey, but this Archdeacon story makes me glad he’s a Flyer. Unselfish kid.

These two recent additions will help with depth and provide good competition in practice. They have both have the potential to develop into good players and earn a scholarship in the future.

Evan Dickey
Watched him play for CJ and he is good. I'm surprised he is not a scholarship player.

How are neither considered a “recruitable athlete” and thereby counted against our scholarship count? I thought that the Oakwood player had an offer from a MAC school.

Thought the same thing. I understand the kid that had no DI offers but is seems that if you have been recruited you are, by definition, "recruitable."

I think both these kids would have received D1 offers if it weren’t for the “Covid hangover”. I’m not saying they would get an offer from UD but would have from some lower D1 school.
There are still a lot of 5 year players out there taking up scholarship spots. I think next year will be the last year of that.

His D1 offers were all preseason and pulled. Which begs the question 'when is an offer not an offer?'

I can imagine that the NCAA has some guidance on this that has the net affect of it helping the student athlete. The NCAA has such swell folks.
