He moved his announcement date up 17 days! My guess is he chooses Mizzou as they defeated Kentucky today while he was on his visit. I may be wrong but I really don't care one way or another which school he chooses as he took Dayton off his list. I have no doubts that Anthony Grant won't find a guard as good, if not better, than Pinson!

Wouldn't be surprised if they are really targeting Neftali Alvarez but will see.

Verbal Commits is reporting we've offered a 6'3 JUCO guard Wendell Mitchell. Redshirted his first year at Baylor, played as a redshirt frosh averaged an 2.9 points and 0.7 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game then went to the JUCO route. 3 star guy out of high school

Sounds like the Flyers are loading up with guards so they never have to get in the position they were in when Trent Meacham transferred to Illinois at the last minute and left the cupboard bare. You can never have too many guards! It is especially true in the A-10. Look what Rhode Island is doing this season!
We've got enough bigs (especially if Kostas ever blossoms!) together with Mikesell and Toppin. Big men could be a priority for 2019-2020.

I wouldn't be surprised if we offered Jordan Brangers a 6'3 guard out of South Plains CC. He signed with Colorado State but decommitted now that their HC Larry Eustachy is suspended and going to be fired. He was committed to West Kentucky last year but couldn't get in out of JUCO, something with transcripts. He was committed to Texas Tech before that
He's originally out of Louisville. #2 guy on Jucorecruiting.com and a 4 star on 247 & their top rated JUCO guy. He wanted to go Western Kentucky and Colorado State so he might not be all about going to big league.

Major sorry to disagree with you but we don't have any bigs right now!!! JC is a 6'6 undersized center and noone else has stepped up from X to Kostas to Pierce must I go on?? We are playing with a 6'3 power forward in Landers??

AG could be fine with playing a 4 guard line up, they could have confidence in Kostas to develop, they could start targeting bigs, who knows

I’ve never understood why we try to minimize our players. Dayton — like most schools — measures their players in shoes, which, depending on make and inner padding, may add anywhere from half an inch to an inch. And last time I checked, basketball players wear shoes on the court. That tells me Josh and Trey are pretty close to their listed heights on the court.
I remember the same thing being said about Chris Wright: “He’s more like 6-6 or 6-7.” Well, the NBA measured him a quarter inch less than 6-8 out of shoes. And guess what, he was listed at 6-8 in the NBA and in the G League. Ditto Chris Johnson at 6-6.
I’m not saying height-hyping doesn’t happen, but I’ll bet Trey is closer to his listed 6-5 than he is 6-3.
Just sounding off. I now return you to the thread topic.

According to the roster on the website he's 193. That's lighter than X, J Davis, Crosby, Kostas, and Mikesell. Svoboda has 30+ pounds on him.
I'm guessing that's from the beginning of the season, which gives him a year to put on muscle, but I am tempering my expectations for him as a post player in his first year.

I'm not saying he'll be all world. I honestly have no idea and won't until we see him suit up next year. I suspect though, that after a year, he'll have put on some muscle as well as had a good chance to learn and absorb what AG wants. Of course he'll have a lot of growth opportunity, but I suspect he'll turn out pretty good.

One of the biggest factors in Toppin's favor is that he's one of Grant's guys. Going into this season, I failed to realize how important that distinction would end up being. Crutcher, Davis, Landers, Svoboda buying in and practicing/playing hard; Cunningham a stud; Toppin a Grant recruit. The others are questionable as to their buy-in factor: Crosby (maybe he just can't put it all together), Xman, Pierce, and possibly Kostas.
We definitely should target a Big if Kostas isn't in the long-term plan of Grant's Flyers...

Obi is a former guard who grew a bunch at the end of high school. I think he's more a combo forward than a pure post player.

Svoboda was an Archie recruit. I think Grant's kind of guy is hard working, do what you are asked to do and carry yourself in a classy way. Hard not to like those kind of players.

Myreon Jones, a 6'3 combo guard out of Birmingham, Alabama. Playing his senior year at prep school in the Atlanta area. 3 star on rivals, 4 star on 24/7. Don't think we offered a scholarship yet but there's interest. He's had a quiet recruitment

Neftali Alvarez article
Miami Christian School is one of Florida's premier basketball programs. Since 2000, MCS has earned 4 State Championships (2000, 2002, 2015, 2017) and produced NBA and professional level guards, including J.J. Barrea, Guillermo Diaz, Denis Clemente, David Huertas, Jesus Verdejo, Carlos Rivera and now Neftali Alavrez.
Over the last two decades, Art Alvarez is responsible for developing and mentoring dozens of high-level college and pro players.
"Our program over the years has had great guards. I put Neftali Alvarez at that level. He has super-stardom written all over him. I don't know whats next for this great player, but I can tell you that he is one of the best I have ever seen. Oh, and by the way, he was the kid last year that hit the buzzer-beater at States in Lakeland."
What Neftali's been able to accomplish this year in going up against the best teams and players in the country is truly amazing. He's had thirteen double-doubles, back-to-back 40 point games, including an unprecedented quadruple-double ( 41 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists, and 11 steals).

One name to keep an eye on... Former Target FL G Serrel Smith... Currently signed with Ole Miss but Andy Kennedy is announcing he is stepping down after the year, so we'll see if he stays with the Rebels
It came down to us, Ole Miss & Wichita.

Not that he'd ever accept, but Andy Kennedy as Associate Head Coach would be an asset.

Serrel Smith is one of the most improved players I’ve seen this winter. Went head to toe with loaded Oak Hill backcourt dropping 42 points. Ole Miss has an instant burst of offense with Smith. Three level, tough shot maker

Definitely a situation worth monitoring. Worth noting that Janes Kane recruited Mississippi heavily at Murray State and Andy Ferrell was at a JUCO in Mississippi so a hit to Ole Miss recruiting is noteworthy.
In addition to Serrel Smith, Ole Miss has a commitment from Brian Hallums, from Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss. He's the number 5 ranked JUCO in the country. Hallums had a Murray State offer. Andy Ferrell and Hallums follow each other on twitter.
And on the current roster, Ole Miss has freshman guard Devontae Shuler from Irmo, SC. He was a four star coming out of Oak Hill. He is buds with Jordan Davis. If he transfers, Dayton could draw interest.

They have a PG committed for next year (Alex Lomax) as well as a couple of SGs (Smith is a combo guy).
But let's see if he's even available. He may decide Ole Miss is still the best place for him, which would be fine. He may have also played himself into some larger offers if big schools have late scholarship availability. My guess is he will take his time on this, as he should.

#Illini basketball recruiting update 6’7” PF from Hale Franciscan HS, now Wabash Valley College told me today: I have 30 DI offers. I have interest from Illinois Georgetown, Xavier, Tulsa, USF, Nebraska, and Dayton. I feel that I could have a positive impact at Illinois.
Austin Trice a 6-foot-7, 230-pound sophomore forward at Wabash Valley College

One of the hottest names on the JUCO level right now is Wabash Valley power forward Austin Trice. The former Hales prep standout is now leading the nation in rebounding at the junior college level. At 6’7” Trice has great strength in his arms along with big time athleticism.
What is going on with recruiting?
“So far I am getting calls from Illinois, Georgetown, Dayton, Tulsa, and Kent State. Things are going great right now. I am just enjoying the process.”
Several programs have extended offers.
“I have offers from Kent State, Murray State, New Mexico, and more.”
Trice says he is very open in the recruiting process and there are no leaders at this point. He has taken a pair of visits with an official visit to New Mexico and an unofficial visit to Illinois.

Well, we already got the kid from Chef Boyardee's hometown. So give me a serving of Policelli with Cheese Toppin?
There's just so many directions you can go with this Cheese kid. Big Cheese. Grilled Cheese. Cheddar Cheese. Cheese Whiz.
Just so long as we don't have any of those Green Bay cheese head hats at the arena, it's all good.

So this is interesting, Tyler Cheese & Florida Southwestern CC played IMG Academy in a game earlier this year. IMG happens to be where Anfernee Simons plays. No clue how a JUCO played a high school but...
Tyler Cheese had 40, 15 & 14 for Florida SW. Anfernee Simons had 33 for IMG. Florida SW 118-104 in 2 OTs

Also, one thing I noticed was 13 for 15 from the free throw line! 87% - I'll take that any day!

IMG Academy is not a HS, it's a post grad prep school, i.e., basketball factory.

They have both a high school & a 13th year prep. Our own Alex Garilovic played at the prep. Still strange to see them competing against a juco

Actually, IMG Academy offers Post Grad Prep, High School, Middle School, Elementary and Pre-K. https://www.imgacademy.com/boarding-school
Now, I heard they've got a pair of 7 footers in pre-K. Kids are like 16 years old cause the parents held 'em back a little. But they've just been destroying all the other Pre-Ks.

Unsigned senior, 6'9 @SaintJamesHoops F Dima Zdor, is currently receiving strong interest from Vanderbilt, Bucknell, Austin-Peay, Wichita St, UC Santa Barbara, USC, South Carolina, and Dayton. Recent offers from James Madison and Utah State.
Not much info out there about him. No stars and his 24/7 page had a different school listed

Or if he plays defense like we've seen this season, Swiss Cheese. Or if he has the same personality as Kostas Whinen Cheese.

Dima Zdor is interesting. Athletic kid from the Ukraine originally. Saw a few highlights on Twitter and various places. Looks like a guy who scores most of his points on dunks. Does not shy away from contact. But a skinny kid who needs to bulk up like Kostas or Toppin. So may be a little bit of a project as bigs tend to be. But Zdor does look at first glance to be more naturally suited to play on the interior which is attractive. We’ve got plenty of stretch 4s. A guy who just wants to dunk everything is something we could use on this roster in my opinion.

I think too much weave was the problem. Is managing to not get dizzy while running figure 8s a skill? Anyway, what little I can find on this Zdor kid seems to suggest he's quite skilled. But none of the ranking services have evaluated him. Seems like he just showed up from Ukraine, is now on his second school, no AAU, so he's just an unknown. Could have transcript issues though. Lack of offers may stem from the fact that he's not been seen and/or coaches are trying to assess his prospects of actually getting through the clearing house.

Tai Strickland, who had coaches from Dayton in attendance, scored the winner on a putback of his own missed shot with 12 seconds remaining to knock previously undefeated Countryside on the road.

Hard to argue with the excitement and motivation that comes with a dunk.
But right now I put defense, rebounding, screening, shot blocking, passing skills, court awareness, ball security all ahead of dunking for the squad we have.

We need a rim protector. An interior presence on both sides. Not sure if Zdor is that. But we need a lot of things.

In what way? So far, we have Jordan Davis and Cohill for next year at SG, if you really want to position them. Jones is listed as SG and I've seen Cohill listed as combo guard. I don't know that it really matters all that much as long as they can all handle the ball, though Crutcher really is PG. We also have an offer out already to Shane Gatling, according to Verbal Commits.
Truthfully, we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, but as far as I've seen, we haven't actually offered the guy, nor do I know if we are. It might be to throw off the scent regarding some other recruit, might be to get someone to commit who hasn't yet, no idea. I don't even know when we'll know, because if players do leave, it may not even be announced until who knows when.
Fasten your seat belts folks, there may be some turbulence ahead.

Not strange as in anything Dayton is doing.
24/7 guys love him. Jerry Meyer (recruiting guru over there) is very high on him and his potential. Little love from the other services
He was going to be the top senior in Alabama but goes to prep school in the Atlanta area. Doesn't seem like he's got many coming after him from the internet.
In the past with this there's usually an academic situation or something else where a guy who should be in a position to get offers recruitment is just dead.
Memphis has got him in on an official and I think you have to have a chance at qualifying to take one so who knows here.

So in the case of Philmon Gebrewhit who we offered last summer along with Rhode Island and a couple others out of a New Hampshire prep school his info has just dried up.
From what I've seen in the past following recruiting this usually means a guy isn't gonna qualify out of high school

Tampa PG Tai Strickland has picked offers from Rutgers and Wisconsin recently.
Sounds like he's not gonna take visits or make a decision until after his season is over. He did mention in an article after Rutgers offered that he likes a guard friendly system.

I don't see how a player could choose Rutgers based upon the basketball program. Have something they want to study - understand. Like the location - understand. They have too much of a challenge to be competitive. Finishing in the top half of the Big10.

Well It is highly unlikely Shaq's kid / Family took any money from anyone - they definitely don't need the money. And anyone offering would really be an idiot.
But definitely looks like Sean Millers "College" coaching career is over - done - kaput.
I think we Flyer Faithful are all experiencing a serve case of schadenfreude right now.

As long as Croatia and the Czech Republic have friendly relations, go for it!

The Croatians don't have an issue with the Czechs. That said, the Croatians were subjugated by the Austro Hungarian empire, which included the Czech area. Archduke Franz Ferdinand had a hunting chateau (Konopiste...look it up) a short distance from Prague. He was assassinated in Sarajevo, and Bosnia is not confused with Croatia.
But, there could be some differences resulting from WWII. The Czech area was brutally ruled by Germany, and their have long been criticisms of Croatia being Nazi sympathizers. It's a bit of a go to card for the Serbs. There was a concentration camp north of Zagreb, which is their Exhibit A. Of course, Tito was from Croatia, and he did align with the Allied forces to push back against Germany.
I guess this is my not so brief way of saying that there isn't a long standing feud between the Czech Republic and Croatia. I do warn that no one should group Croatia with the Czech Republic and other Eastern Bloc countries. That should **** off any proud Czech. The Soviets did not occupy Yugoslavia.

This has my interest.
Says nothing about a 6'2" 180 lb. guard.
Now we are getting somewhere

Yeah, not to be overly critical of recruiting, but you can’t coach height. It’s not like we’re playing in a “6’6” and under” league. Sooner or later, you need someone who can board, and given 2 players with equal desire, I’ll take the taller one, thank you very little.

We have a 7 footer warming the bench while a 6’1” freshman guard is the best player on the team. Height is good, but not the end all.

I like it. Gatling is better shooter and ball handler than Matos. I see Matos as more of Trey Landers type guard while Gatling is more a traditional shooting guard

Iván Aurrecoechea is a 6'8 C/F for Indian Hills who's the 10th rated guy on jucorecruiting.com Could be kicking the tires on him if they're looking for another post

I would argue Trey Landers is our best player.
I couldn't even fathom THINKING about typing this last year, let alone DOING it.
