Every time some website analyzes men's basketball finances nationally, we are always in the top 25.

Not poor at all. It was in response to the 15-15 model with UD going on the road for a big boy versus them getting the home revenue.
UD has to obtain the financial numbers and the lack of a home game, or two, cuts into that.

Take an honest look at our schedule and tell me that's a top 3 SOS in the country. There's a major flaw in the math if what we had last year was top 3.

My bad, I mixed them up with Alabama. Alabama, another boring team we seem to play every 2-3 years.

Our KenPom NC SOS based on final season results was #118. My guess is the "3" was our NC SOS tallied before the conference schedule began.
Of the top 20 NC SOS, only 3 were not mid or low majors: Temple (7), UNC (16), Tennessee (20). The rest played a ton of "buy" games away from home.
Here's all the A10 NC SOS according to KenPom:
Richmond - 34
URI - 64
LaSalle - 93
St. Joe's - 94
UD - 118
Davidson - 121
St Bon - 127
VCU - 128
SLU - 134
GW - 153
UMass - 259
GM - 279
Fordham - 313
Duquesne - 350 (out of 351, only Georgetown had worse NC SOS)

The #3 (actually #2) ranking comes from UD's non conference rpi SOS per UDPride. Certainly you can argue that KenPom is a better metric, but that is where it is coming from, for whatever its worth.

Anyone complaining about our schedule should look at URI's lol
Home: Bryant, Brown, Stony Brook, Harvard and Middle Tennessee State
Away: Providence, Charleston, Holy Cross
Neutral: WVU, Diamond Head Classic
Alabama home game moved to next year and Nevada opted out of the road game to the Ryan Center
Woof!

I would think all home-and-home contracts are built like that. Why wouldn't they be?
It's no different than coaching contracts that have a buy-out which is paid by the coaches new team (basically), and the opportunity for a home-and-home with that team, unless that team is one of 3 dream jobs for a coach.
I think it's more interesting in that Nevada opted out at all. Weren't we just talking about Quad 1/2 wins, road victories, and the sort, and Nevada bailed out on one. (possibly, URI has new coach and graduated a lot) Is Nevada afraid of losing to URI? Afraid of URI not being a Quad 1/2? That's where the story is here. Why did Nevada buy out URI?

They were supposed to play at Davidson this year too but they pushed that series back to 19/20
I haven't been able to find a reason but I wonder if it might have something to do with staying out west. Vegas, LA and Phoenix looks like the only place they're traveling to so far

Why is this such a bad schedule? WVU, Providence, Harvard, MTSU. I'd take that in a heartbeat. Plus you get at least another decent game at the Diamond Head. Charleston had a RPI in the 60s last year and Stony Brook is usually decent.
Have you some some insider knowledge about why our schedule will be better than this?

I found these tweets from the Nevada beat writer
@MurrayRGJ
Cost to Nevada to buy out the Rhode Island game was $50,000. So the Wolf Pack basically bought a home game against a Top 25 team last year for $50,000
@Tlemieux72
Replying to @MurrayRGJ
Kingston be like, and I don’t blame the fans, ad, or coaches for being ****ed.
I also can understand why Nevada did it but old saying does comes to mind. “If you play with fire....
@MurrayRGJ
I don't think that was the original plan, but the Sweet 16 run opened other scheduling opportunities and URI shouldn't have agreed to a $50K buyout. Industry standard is $100K. I can see it from both sides. Nevada fans won't be happy if USC, for example, bails next year.

MurrayRGJ
Considering it cost Nevada $85K to buy a home game vs. Idaho last season, this was a shrewd move. Davidson was smart enough to make the buyout $100K.
Who is replacing URI?
@MurrayRGJ
There is no one specific game that replaces it. It just opened up the schedule for different opportunities. Road game at USC (with a return game at Nevada next year) possible because of move. Some neutral-site games also possible as a result of the move.

I'm still confused by this so I did all the numbers (end of season RPI):
MTSU - 30
Harvard - 120
Providence - 36
Charleston - 61
WVU - 24
Brown, Bryant and Holy Cross are RPI tankers, but at least Holy Cross is a road game. The Diamond Head will have some nice RPI games: TCU (28), Colorado (84), and SMC (46). Hawaii and UNLV should be better next year too.
I agree this isn't a phenomenal non-con, but compared to SO many schools problems scheduling outside of conference, attacking this seems rather nit picky.

So H & H with SLU, UMASS, URI, VCU and Duquesne? That's about as good as we could hope for I would think.

I'd like to actually beat UMass this year...
St. Louis, Rhode Island, VCU all likely to be top 1/3 of A10 next year, so a solid schedule in my opinion. Plus, I like having LaSalle (terrible gym) and St. Joe's (best team?) at home, and only playing Fordham once (wish it was zero times) as well.

Yes. Let’s start with point Number one on this post. Beat UMass! If I were a betting man, I would expect that game at Saint Bonaventure to be one of the ESPN Friday night games. Same goes for one of the Rhode Island matchup’s . We shall see though.

Pretty sure that's it so far. 4-5 more games yet to be announced. Am I missing any? Those looking for more than one true road game might need to look elsewhere! It is a bit concerning to be well into January and only be playing your second true road game.

Pretty sure that's it so far. 4-5 more games yet to be announced. Am I missing any? Those looking for more than one true road game might need to look elsewhere! It is a bit concerning to be well into January and only be playing your second true road game.
|
There's gonna be a mainland game as a part of the Battle for Atlantis
Wofford and Charleston Southern are two of the mainland teams and the others are TBA

That's what I meant UD2, if we're playing a "mainland" game with a non-participant of the actual tournament (i.e. Wofford/Charleston So.), is that exempt like a game against one of the actual participants would be?
Sounds like it is and we'll be playing 31 total games. You wouldn't have to play an additional game though if you use an exempt one, just an option.

It would be exempt, included with the 3 tournament games all (4) counting as 1 game on the 31 allowed list.

All this talk of the power 5 not playing well with others and the NCAA going along with this speaks of collusion/anti-Trust, etc. We need to get the Justice Department Involved as the NCAA is perpetrating the exclusion of the smaller schools.
Have a maximum number of schools from one conference.
I propose that half of the NCAA bid go to power 5 and the other half go to the rest of the schools. With the power 5 going to schedules with more in conference games need to be penalized.
Lets get Trump involved!
Well I feel better now!

Love this:
“The start of the season had become so compressed with the holidays and exams,” Dan Gavitt, the NCAA’s senior vice president for basketball, told NCAA.com, “that the additional three days allows schools to better schedule the start of the season and it’s the benefit for the student athletes and coaches.”
Those darn exams were getting in the way of sports! So let's start even EARLIER and lengthen the season, adding even more overlap with football, etc., etc.

We got top 25 Mississippi State on the Home Schedule... the Battle for Atlantis is loaded, Tulsa is a solid neutral game and Auburn will be an insane road game... We need "buy" home games, it's not that bad... The schedule will be tough enough as it is.

LOL so we shouldn't post updates to the SCHEDULE thread about the SCHEDULE? Is there a poll on here for dumbest post of the year? This has got to be in the team photo at least.

I’m Quite happy with our schedule at this point. Probably a Mac opponent or two and a few more buy games and that’ll do it.
So thus far:
11/7 North Florida
11/22, 11/23, 11/25, Bahamas.
11/30 Mississippi State.
12/8 @Auburn
12/16 Tulsa in CT
12/22 presbyterian .

That Big East prediction is very fluid by Rothstein. Butler could finish 9th or 4th. The league is that unpredictable. As for Butler, they lost their two tough guys at the 3 and 4 spots...6-7 Kelan Martin and 6-8 Tyler Wideman. Martin was truly the heart and soul of their team last season and could score in many different ways. What keeps Butler down in the standings is their defense out top. Duke transfer 6-7 Jordan Tucker is supposed to help that. Kamar Baldwin, Paul Jorgensen, and Sean McDermott all return on the arc so UD will have to guard those 3 guys. Baldwin and soph Aaron Thompson will do most of the PG duties. Down low the Moeller grad Nate Fowler returns for his senior season. Fowler can step away and make shots too. Christian David and newcomer Bryce Golden could be guys who contribute on the baselines. X had their way with Butler by beating them back in transition and making the extra pass on the wing for wide...wide open three's. We'll see if Jordan has addressed the defense. It's a game UD could win but the DAWGS always play hard..

Agree...Butler and Creighton have been consistent performers in the BE, I am skeptical that they finish at 8 and 9.
Marquette at #2 I am also skeptical of, Wojo might even be on the hot seat. I am not really a fan of his offense, they shoot a lot of wild 3's it seems.
I am also skeptical of SJU at #3, and GU at #5.

Didn’t Archie offer Nate Fowler (Butler’s Senior Center) a ‘ship when he was a Freshman at Moeller? One more reason it would be all the sweeter to beat the ‘Dogs.

I took the liberty of assuming we are on the Virginia/MTSU side of the bracket based on that tweet. Win or lose game 1 we will have a good match up in game 2. This has to be one of, if not the, most stacked holiday tournament bracket I've ever seen.

Butler released its schedule today and is hosting Presbyterian on December 18th. With us hosting them on December 22nd, I'd guess that Presbyterian is part of the Battle for Atlantis mainland games. (Wofford at Stanford on 11/16 then at Oklahoma on 11/18, for reference)

The NCAA requires that all of the events games fall within a 14 day span, so unless some exemption was granted, Presbyterian is not the mainland game. They are likely just cutting down travel while collecting their checks.

We did everything we could to get out of the Coppin Atlantis game. It was handed to us by the tournament. Tried to even buy the game out and simply not play it, or swap it. No dice. From what I understand there was too much cooperation needed from other Atlantis schools to make it happen and of course other schools would then want to try and do the same thing too.
Keep in mind you also need a schedule your team can be successful against. Many questions with this year's team. From my chair this schedule -- both non-con and A10 -- provides more than enough obstacles to keep the staff from being overconfident. Lets not forget ourselves. We arent a great opponent for a lot schools on their schedules either. In Atlantis alone we have the worst RPI of the field.
If the headline at the end of the season is "Flyers just miss NCAA field, schedule cited as reason", I will be doing cartwheels in the street b/c we're way ahead of this rebuild project.

When we have good seasons and tourneys, the saying is no one wants to play us because we are a threat. When we have a poor year, no one wants to play us.

Ok, so we are forced to play Coppin State, then dump the Detroit, FW, Presbyterian, or North Florida game and set up a home and home.
We just about usually play 5 buy games, 2 good home games, and 5 away/neutral. This year we are playing 7 buy games, 1 good home game, and 5 away/neutral.

one game against a sub 300 RPI team isn't going to make or break the season.
Atlantis, Auburn and Mississippi State are what matters.

We were literally the last team into the tournament 4 years ago. Playing 3 guaranteed RPI 300+ teams as buy games (and setting that as a precedent with AG moving forward) will absolutely break a season. Every possible analytic is there to identify teams that will not finish in the 300+ RPI. If you're forced to play 1 of them because of an exempt tournament, fine. Finding the 150s-225s for the buy game is how analytic manipulation must be done if we want to start competing for at larges again.

you're not wrong. I could be wrong but I think that's more of a factor with a weaker OOC schedule. This schedule has the opportunity to rack up the most high quality wins in OOC in a long time
Anything less than 2-1 in Atlantis and a split of the SEC schools and the bubble bursts on an at large bid regardless of anything on the margins. I'd rather play Georgia State than Detroit but I think this season everything comes down to 5 games (Atlantis/SEC)
1-2, 0-3 in Atlantis and at large dreams are over

it's interesting that people get upset at a sub 250 RPI buy games but there's a distinct lack of outcry from the A10 forcing a second game with Duquesne which is been consistently an RPI sinkhole

The schedule could be worse....and just because a change in schedule would benefit UD, doesn't mean it would benefit anyone else. Everyone gets a seat at the table in the conference and the traditionally "better" programs have benefited over the years by having a stronger grouping.

They're the closest team to us, it's pretty much guaranteed we will play them twice. I think it's made slightly better by the fact that the road game is almost always a Saturday so Dayton fans can travel and fund Duquesne's team budget for half the year.

The #9 seeds in last year's NCAA tournament had an average non-con SOS of #235. The non-con schedule is perfectly fine given our youth and inexperience. What cant happen is the A10 cannot go 90-82 in the non-con for a second year in a row. That's what derailed the train in 2017-18. Instead of being closer to .500, we need to be closer to .700.

Let me guess - they were all P5 schools.

quality of buy games aside this one of the best schedules in recent memory. There's every opportunity to prove with Atlantis and the SEC Schools

Yep. Kansas State (Big 12), Alabama (SEC), North Carolina State (ACC), and Florida State (ACC).
And the rich get richer.

Finding the 150s-225s for the buy game is how analytic manipulation must be done if we want to start competing for at larges again.

Remember the A10 H/Hs the year we went to the play in game. Fordham, La Salle, Duquesne and a down St. Louis
Thanks, A10

All the too powerful P5 and weak A10 talk aside, the Flyers always put a schedule together that gives them the opportunity to make the NCAAT field as an at large candidate. The seed may be questionable but if they win enough of the right games and don't lose too many of the wrong games, the will be selected. Many other non-P5 can't say the same thing.

Yes, I agree, but I think 2 more good/tough games per year is a much more forgiving way to schedule things. If we stub our toe/have a bad game/suffer a short-term freak injury in the Bahamas or vs. MSU or Auburn, then the season could be ruined because of one single bad game.
And some of these exempt tournaments occur very early in the season, last year's exempt tourney was our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th games of the season, we had barely gotten our feet wet at that point, it is not fair to put so much weight on games that occur so early in the season.
I would really like it if we would give ourselves more chances to prove ourselves, without placing so much pressure on the limited number of truly big games.

Of note, our one Friday night conference game is at home, 16 nationally televised games, all stadium broadcasts will be on ESPN plus which I don’t get, as stadium streams their channel for free. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Better find a friend with spectrum sports because I think will be on there a lot.
