Wow, Archie really needs to figure out a way to attack the zone or we are in big trouble in the A-10.

Simply unconscionable that we are in this position.

The second half of Furman aside, but we have forgotten how to play good basketball.

They couldn't shoot until tonight. They made 4 three pointers with about 3 seconds or less on the shot clock, and made 3 more 3pt shots than they have been making all season.
Made some shots with defenders hanging all over them. This is what rivalries are all about and it almost bit us in the but.

Thank you Lord. And Kyle Davis.

Smith

I didn't see/hear the game...but how does our point guard get 4 fouls in 23 minutes of play? He's the PG!

PS....over the years there has been much talk as to why we "lower" ourselves by playing MU every year. SDF mentioned the rivalry....I think he's right.

I thought Kyle's line drive was headed up the middle into centerfield. But then the rim got an outstretched glove on it. Merry Christmas! Can't wait for Dyshawn's return against Arkansas.

You certainly cannot win this way.

We lost to UTC at home and should have lost tonight and they are both teams we were favored to beat and should have beaten handily. I know it means a lot to dig deep and pull one out when things are not going your way but, based on tonight, I don't think they are ready for A10 either particularly when we play GWU and Davidson in the first five games. Based on UTC and Miami games, it does not seem like the home court advantage will help us against seasoned teams. SS being in foul trouble did not help but it seemed like undisciplined, bad passes that were anticipated by MU and not blocking out and allowing MU to get offensive rebounds and put shots back up at end of the game, hurt us badly.

One other hand - a win is a win and putting a W in the column is what counts. Maybe we should stop worrying about polls, ratings , tournament brackets and seeding and just worry about the next opponent. Take this game as a learning experience because we may be facing more zones, improve and come back strong against Arkansas.

We just dodged a .45 caliber bullet. This would have been a bad bad loss.

Charles is something else. 5 turnovers, 3 fouls, 1-4 from the ft line. Then he proceeds to nail 18 second half points to keep us in the game. More than half of the team total of 35.

This Miami team only lost by 9 or so to X earlier this year. They play tough zone D. I think SS is just tired as is the team in general. Still, good teams find ways to win on nights when maybe they shouldn't. As I type this I'm watching Oakland leading by 2 in OT against number 1 Michigan St. ....

Another instance where it helped that KD is a lefty--he drove left and shot a lefty push/jumper that was nuthin' but bottoms.

I think SS is mentally tired of trying to run an offense that some appear incapable or unwilling to execute. Last season all 7 players bought into the constant motion, quick passing, making the extra pass, et. al. This season it's not working because of the investment Coach is making in the Frosh. We could not have won the game without Charles, however he is not the
same piece of a fluid offensive puzzle as Dyshawn was. I think Charles is willing, but at certain time when it's not working he is obliged to make some freaking baskets any way his athleticism will let him.

And yes, we need to hit some shots. But actually as ugly as the first half shooting was, we ended the game with reasonable shooting percentages. It's just not pretty. Just ask SS.

It's not Charles vs Pierre so much as no Pierre and no Sibert. Lost the ability to extend the defense.

No post - inside scoring off of flashes - changed the offense last year and spaces the floor. Playing small restores that. And loses Steves influence at the back end of the defense. That was the difference I. The game late. Miami blew wide open stick backs looking for Steve. If they don't blow those last possession need a three to tie.

I thought our offensive movement was pretty good in the 2nd half. It opened up some shots and when you start nailing some points it tends to put a spring in your step, giving you even better movement. The fact we got sloppy with the rock and turned it over is what let them back in the game.

As far as the team and SS being tired -- I agree it looks like that but it's hard to understand why. We are 9-2. MU is 6-6. They have played one more game than us. They didn't look tired. I didn't look up average minutes per player and there is always how hard the coaches are pushing in practice, etc. Theses two things might be causing fatigue. But if we are tired now, we are in trouble. Let's hope it's something like colds going around that players can get over, because I agree -- we LOOK tired.

Question Question for anyone?

I did not get to see the last minute of play for some silly reasons. But as I look at the play by play, it shows Miami with the 1 point lead and around the 19 second mark Eric Washington takes a shot and misses. 5 seconds later Miami gets the rebound and Logan McLane takes a shot and misses. 4 seconds later LJ Livingston takes a shot and misses.

Then Cooke rebounds and Kyle's shot is history.

Why in the world was Miami shooting with the lead and no shot clock to worry about?

Washington had to shoot due to the 30 sec clock, but the other two players did not. It seems as if we got a major break when they kept shooting. They could have run some seconds off the clock and eventually we have to foul and put them at the line.

Absolutely correct. Miami gave us an early Christmas present. They obviously didn't think about the time and played as if the possession was in the middle of the game. Part of that has to be on the coach. He had called timeout prior to the start of that possession and still had one timeout left.

I agree 100% when they missed and got the offensive rebound my heart sank because I assumed they would kick out and force us to foul. That was a gift.

You are absolutely correct...why shoot after Washington's miss? They could have taken the ball out, run the clock and get fouled...game over.
Call it "Down low, last second instinctive crapolla." Anyway, help is on the way to hopefully avoid a need for last second divine intervention and heroics!

Memory is foggy in old age but I don't think Washingtons shot hit the rim. At least one of the follows was from point blank range and missed everything except the backboard.

That sure would have contributed to the panic by the Miami offense. But my math had Washington shooting with 4 seconds left on the shot clock. Since the second shooter shot 5 seconds later, there would have been a shot clock violation on Miami.

Probably we really were the recipients of some last seconds panic and youthful intensity to score and put us away.

Thumbs down Coach Cooper had two big mistakes last night

Coach Cooper didn't have a good night. Your point was a huge mistake on his part, but his 2 point technical looks pretty large at this point also. And in spite of his continued fractious behavior prior to the technical the ref gave him a mile of rope, almost as if to say, "Don't force me to do this". I think Cooper read somewhere that high profile coaches do that to fire up their squad.

Confirmed this through a mix of video at ABC 22 and through hustlebelt.

Washington shot did not draw iron. It was off to the left and batted free(ABC22 website). McClain gathered it to the right and quickly put it up, releasing a second or so before the shot clock expired (hustlebelt game story). He missed badly but drew iron - so no shot clock violation. Livingston is credited with a rebound and missed shot - but it's more a lunging off balance tip. He never gathered in the ball, and it doesn't look like he had an opportunity to. The game log that shows four seconds elapsed between the second offensive rebound and the third shot is just wrong. Cooke knocks the rebound free and chases it down in the corner and heads up court.

Miami never really had a chance to possess the ball, kick it out and draw a foul.

Good analysis. Fills in the blanks that one is left with reading the play by play detail. Shows even more clearly how we dodged a bullet with their two shots and an off balance tip. It sounds like Livingston is the only one who had a chance to call a time out. But in that heated moment I'm not sure who really would.

I was going to post the exact same recap. Just watched the last few minutes of the game on my DVR, and you are 100% correct.

Despite the final score, I have now erased this game from both by DVR and my memory, time to move on.

Merry Christmas Flyer fans.

Livingston never had possession of the ball. Would not have been granted a TO.

So was the last 19 seconds a tribute to our defense, some lousy shooting by Miami, or some sick clock management by Cooper? Or a helping of all of the above and some really good fortune that we got a gift possession?

I would say none of the above. it is reflective of UD's recent issues in rebounding the ball.

Miami ran the clock down and with about 8 Left on the shot clock Washington initiated offense. No mismanagement by Cooper or MU of the clock. Defense collapsed on Washington in the lane and he put up an off balance shot. Would say that was a mix of defense from UD cutting off Washington and covering up his release points. That's about all of the normal possession there was. The shot missed everything and came down around the left block (may have hit the board but not gonna go back and watch again). Nobody gained clean possession and the ricocheted outside the lane on the other side of the basket. When Miami gaine possession there was one or two on the shot clock. The rebounder put up a hurried shot from outside the lane that hit the rim and came off on the same side. The other Miami guy crashed the boards from outside and tipped the ball back up. I don't think he had any chance to rebound it and gain possession. The tip missed and came out on opposite side where Cooke rebounded, and lost the board and chased it down in the corner.

Other than Washington getting a better shot, or finding someone to dish to, I think MU played the possession pretty well. Even on defense. The last 19 seconds were characterized by UD being unable to secure a rebound and Kyle Davis having a prayer answered. He probably can't make that shot again with 19 more attempts.

Abc22now.com still has decent video of the last 19 seconds.

Being a lefty gave him a much better chance. A righty would likely have been blocked. From the other side a lefty would have been blocked. I'd give him 1 of 4. And that's pretty good given that it was too late to pass for a better shot.
