Jon Rothstein at UD today
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 1h1 hour ago
Greetings from Dayton. Here to visit with the Flyers. Year One of the Anthony Grant era.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 35m35 minutes ago
Dayton's Kostas Antetokounmpo (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the season, per Anthony Grant.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 31m31 minutes ago
The big theme right now out of Dayton? Limited depth. Flyers are beyond short handed from a personnel standpoint. A program in transition.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 29m29 minutes ago
Expect Dayton to slide Xeryius Williams to small forward in year one under Anthony Grant. Flyers have limited options at the 3 spot.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 28m28 minutes ago
Dayton needs Josh Cunningham to play like a first team All-A 10 caliber player and for several other guys to have breakout years. New era.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 27m27 minutes ago
Early prediction on Dayton's starting five: John Crosby, Darrell Davis, Xeryius Williams, Josh Cunningham, Kostas Antetokounmpo.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 26m26 minutes ago
Remember the name Jordan Davis. Freshman guard can really shoot it and will log major minutes for Dayton. Could be a big help offensively.
Jon RothsteinVerified account @JonRothstein 24m24 minutes ago
Hard to remember a year where the Atlantic 10 was this wide open at the top. League needs to make as much hay possible in Nov. & Dec.

Williams sliding over to SF is a surprise to me! I know some on the board predicted that. I love having Williams, Kostas and Josh on the floor at the same time. Not a good sign for expectations on Svoboda.

In that lineup X and Kostas are probably fairly interchangeable. Assuming X is the more polished shooter at this stage and Kostas' wing span (shot blocking) it makes sense, but Cunningham is more of the center insofar as post presence and rebounding.

IMO, expecting Kostas to be a starter, or even a major contributor, is expecting a whole lot.
I would temper those expectations.

I don't know, but I'm guessing that the sentiment came from AG's observations watching the guys play so it's not totally out in left field.

You are probably right - Maybe I was reading too much into it - the “limited options” part. Maybe it means don’t expect D Davis or Trey Landers to log many minutes there.

"Limited depth" can also mean limited experienced players, but said in a clumsy way.
At Duke the freshmen are ready and expected to play right away, at UD some of the sophomores still have unanswered questions. Trey Landers is a good example.
Or, he really did mean limited depth.

Rothstein's prediction on the starting five has little to do with the reality of who plays the most minutes this year.

Gotta believe starting 5 based upon Grant's input, he did not make it up. But as said, starting 5 does not equal most playing time.

If AG can cobble together an NIT bid this year, we should be beyond ecstatic. Will not be easy.

Feels like this season may be playing for a national championship that is going to be vacated by the FBI investigation anyway.

I can't really say if any particular incoming player will make a big splash this year; however, I can say, it is very possible that shawnee2 gets their information directly from the team huddle, or one mouth removed...just saying. That's my FYI to you!

FWIW, I saw that we dropped to 5th place in the overall roster player rankings. So, per that ranking, a NIT bid seems about right.
I think it is interesting that SBU is 2nd to last, but is projected to make the NCAAT this year. VCU is 6th and is projected as a NCAAT contender this year by some.

Given all the untested players on out roster, I believe it is hard to get an accurate preseason ranking on the overall roster of the Flyers this year. 5th could be correct, but it is a real guessing game this year. This is just another date point is a sea of datepoints that really don't mean anything. Only data point that really means anything is the W-L record at the end of the regular season, and this year the W-L for the Flyers is harder to predict than in past years.

If this doesn't take into consideration the class of the player it means nothing. A three-star senior is a lot different than a three-star freshman. And in many cases stars don't mean that much anyway.

crosby and DD are our weakest set of starters in some time. However, who knows perhaps John can surprise us and show maturity, hutzpah, and play defense. Most teams go, according to their PG.
I am most stoked about Svoboda. On paper , he's mature and ready. We'll see how he fits into an AG team... how quick he can grasp it or not.
WE DO need big year from Cunningham. I expect a good year from X Williams.
Kostas can't expect much from, but would be some nice gravy if he provide some explosiveness, numbers and excitement!
That leaves guys like Trey Landers, Jordan Davis as huge question marks. We got lotsa question marks this year. Cohesiveness, defense, and some rapid growth from sophs and others need to happen!

Kostas is a top 100 recruit that has had a year to get acclimated to college, as well as go through the college weight room program. He has been shooting and running for awhile now since his injury. Reports 2 weeks ago were he would be back in contact drills soon and would 100% when the season starts. I think it is plenty fair to have some lofty expectations from him.

I expect Kostas, Xeryius, and Josh to be our best players.
I expect one of the true freshman to surprise - Jordan Davis? - and the other three to be good off the bench.
I feel like we already know D Davis and Crosby.
Landers - should be interesting to see if he makes big strides.

I think we know what we're going to get with DD, which is good but not exceptional. And that's OK. Not everyone is a borderline NBA talent. It's not fair to expect every 2 guard to light up his senior year (not that you're saying that).
But with Crosby I see so many sparks that if he could just get the right confidence level he could really take a leap forward. I don't think we've seen his best days yet, by a long shot.

This feels like a post that I'll perhaps regret, but...
I think some of you are sleeping on Darrell Davis. His defense really improved last year, and was legit lights-out vs a very talented Wichita St team. I like all of his quotes from this summer, and he's the lone senior contributor. I'm not expecting all A-10, but I really think he'll be a fine starter at SG

I respect your opinion but I'm afraid his mediocrity will be exposed and possibly exploited, given the fact that there are no go-to players left after last graduation. He's possibly your 2nd outlet after XW and I'm afraid he won't shine with more responsibility.
You should be right about Crosby because he has more talent than the results have shown. However I believe he has shown his ceiling isn't what was thought to be. I'm not going to bash anyone, as some like to call it, but he has areaS that he's struggled in. As a pg decision-making should be in your top two attributes if you're not an insane-athlete, imo.
The two players are very similar in makeup, imo.

I hope you're proven wrong. Seniors (especially those who haven't lived up to their own career expectations) take an aggressive...almost grudge-like passion/desperation into their senior year. DD wants to leave his own legacy.
Last year DD played with 4 seniors who dominated and frequently demanded the ball (after all there is only one in most organized basketball games).
Devon O did it. I think the poster child for that was Dan Sadlier (which of course only 5% of you could remember). He went from a fine player to the go-to (MVP) guy.
I thoroughly expect a great season from DD. I think he will have a new strut of confidence based on the current situation. Go DD !!!!!! Remember this prediction - "He will be UD's MVP" (BTW if I am wrong UD will have the season from Hell)
I hope I'm proven right.

Was thinking the same about Trey Landers. He may end up with 6-8 ppg. Seems to have a knack to find the bucket.

Trey Landers seems like a real wildcard. He was mostly forgettable last year, but he has good size for a wing and may surprise some with some inside scoring and rebounding. I could see him anywhere between becoming a go to 6th man or playing 3 minutes a game.

I am optimistic about Landers as well, especially in Coach Grant's full-court game. Landers is quick, strong, and has the potential to be an outstanding defender. My concern with him is ball-handling and finishing around the hoop. These are both correctable items. I think that injury he had last year was a big setback for him.

Would not be shocked at all if either Trey Landers or Matej Svoboda logs more minutes this year than Kostas. Literally no ceiling on Kostas' upside but it's going to take more time than most think in my humble opinion.

Especially since Kostas hasn't worked out a lot with the team. He went to play with the Greek team this summer, then got hurt and still is not cleared for contact.
Like Archie's first year, I think this team may score more points than we have seen but give up more.

Landers has to greatly improve his defense. 17 fouls in 52 minutes give indication that he was out of position as a defender, and not moving his feet. Some say he was injured last year, so we shall see.

Dallas i have no idea why you think Trey is quick? He is athletic and a really good kid who works hard but please do not get expectations of his ability to the point you will be disappointed. He will work very hard to be the best he can be!
