Edwin Young ref VCU game
Elsewhere on Pride it
was stated that former
Flyer Edwin Young was
reffing VCU-Davidson game
tonite. I took a look.
It looked like Young.
If so that is not proper.
That puts too much pressure
on Edwin Young

It was definitely Edwin and it's not too much pressure to put on him to be calling other A10 games. He has worked his way up to calling higher level games and is an excellent official. The people who assign the officials know where the officials went to school and if there was anything suspicious they would know. You shouldn't question the integrity of a great Flyer like Edwin and I can guarantee he is calling the game as a neutral party.

That's exactly what you did!
If you read your own words you said "Flyer Edwin Young was reffing VCU-Davidson game tonite. I took a look. It looked like Young. If so that is not proper."
Simply by saying "that is not proper" you are insinuating that Edwin can't officiate the game fairly which is absolutely questioning his integrity.

I don't think he is trying to single Edwin out as an issue - I think he is just talking about a larger issue of having anyone (not specifically Edwin) reffing a game with such a large impact on their alma mater. He just happens to have knowledge of where Edwin went to school, which I'll be honest I can't name where another ref went to school - so no idea where conflicts may exist.
Not saying the NCAA needs to change something, but it is a reasonable question to ask.

I give Edwin all the
credit in the world.
Just seems
assigning him A10
games
other then one's
that have such an
impact on his alma
mater mite be considered.
I did not intend to challenge
his integrity.

There's a very good chance that 100% of D1 basketball officials have college degrees that imply loyalty to some school or conference. The difference between them and other 'fans' is that they can separate themselves and others can't.
I live in Oakwood and have reffed Oakwood games and nobody knows the difference. I'm an Alter grad and reffed their games...and nobody knows the difference. I reffed games coached by my friends and don't favor them, nor do they expect it. To imply Edwin can't ref A10 games because he's a UD grad is, IMRO, shallow. He never would have reached the D1 level if anyone thought he was a homer. Questioning Edwin's abilities and loyalties is Royally ridiculous.

I remember an alley oop pass Young threw to Tony Stanley that was the decisive play to beat Temple Ryan Perryman's senior year at home. So awesome. Top 5 play i ever saw in the Arena

Remember that. About a minute left in the game. Temple was really good at the time. That was one of our first real signature wins under Purnell in the A10. I think we may have run the play out of a timeout.

I heard one of the announcers say Edwin's name and sure enough, there he was. I hadn't noticed him earlier. I liked it when he used to ref our exhibition games at the arena.

Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes.
Those were loaded Temple teams. Pepe Sanchez was a sophomore guard on that team and i believe Lamont Barnes and maybe Lynn Greer too. Positive on Sanchez not the other guys. Mark Karcher may have been there too. Brooks runner against Villanova, Mark Jones 3 against Richmond, the entire game against _avier where Hoskins scored 30 and Horton scored 20, and that oop are for sure 4 out of my 5, Id haggle on the other 1, but probably Perryman's lone career 3.

Right or wrong, I don't think he was questioning his integrity in any way. I think he was implying that it was unfair to put him in the position where his subconscious loyalty might interfere with the calls.
I'm not saying I agree I'm just saying that's different from questioning integrity to me. Questioning his integrity implies he would make a bad call on purpose.

For what it is worth,
I have a friend who retired a couple of years from officiating high school football. He was never allowed to officiate a game involving his Dayton area alma mater. He was never given the choice. Why introduce another area of contention.
I also remember that Bill Russell said the best ways for gamblers to fix games was to payoff the referees. If you read about the gambling system used by the corrupt NBA ref Donaghy you will be amazed at his betting system. He was so much better than the average better because of what he knew about referees. They impact the outcome of games.

For those of you wondering, Edwin officiated the OSU v Towson St game last night. Big10 games pay $3200 + expenses.
Here are his reffing stats: https://natstat.com/mbb/official/edwin-young

lol, bumping a thread almost 5 years old. I was puzzled as to why VCU and Davidson were playing each other in early December. Took me only 10 minutes to figure it out.

And his +/- is -3.65 on H/V calls, so he's an obvious fraud!
