We need to get off to the start we got off to vs. VCU... except this time maybe don't put in Crosby and give the whole lead back before halftime.

They are begging for a sell out (7,600) but only have 6,800 sold as of now. Biggest game in years and a must win and they can't fill the joint. We sold out for the dukes.

Maybe we should tell Scoochie not to pick up 2 fouls so he doesn't get benched and force Crosby to play so much.

Will be interesting to see how much PT Cunningham gets. Could he be the difference? Not much film on him from this year either.

Not worried about that. RI always has a strong walk up crowd for games. Plus 1500 tickets are allotted for students

Give them a night and enjoy the schadenfreude tomorrow.
They just firmly landed on the wrong side of the bubble.
Viva la Hurley! That last in bounds call was awful.

Who is keeping score? Are we ahead of them yet? Between the Barrons and Dustin Hellinga I think we may still owe them one.

My favorite Rhody fan post-game comments:
"I officially hate Dayton."
and a follow-up comment
"Dayton is what URI should aspire to be."

Place looked bigger than that on TV from Dayton. Especially when you consider that the old UD Fieldhouse used to hold @ 5,900.

Since the 2015 A-10 Tournament, we're evening the score. Win by 4, win by 2, win by 3, win by 1. Granted, we had a 9-point home loss last year, but still we've won 4 of the last 5, and the total point differential in those 5 games is 2 points. Sounds like a rivalry, buoys!

We need an A10 rival.
I thought it might be SLU but a rival needs to be competitive. VCU might fit the bill over time but Rhode Island seems to be a good fit now. I like the way this is developing into a nice rivalry.

Have seen a bit of crying on the no call on the last URI drive. I mean, seriously. 17-8 fouls in the second half and still crying for a bail out.
The guy walked or it's a jump ball if anything.

It could develop as a rivalry. But definitely not enough animosity yet. I was there going nuts after the X bomb and everyone congratulated me.

He walked. Saw the replay 2 or 3 times at home. Took 2-1/2 steps. OK for NBA, not for NCAA.

That game worries me too. Good setup for a trap game. Let's hope Arch has them ready to go.
Here's a hopeful note though: we've won all our road games this year with JC in the lineup, and I'm happy to say he's baaaccckkkk!!!

From their message board:
"At least we dont have to hear about at large bids anymore"
"We couldn't win a conference tournament in a one team league."
"That was a ****ing foul **** THIS ****ING ****"
"Never a doubt that was going in. I called it before they even inbounded the ball. Every single time."

I don't think you can have an effective "rivalry" with a school 1000 miles away.

In the grand sense, yeah, I agree.
But ESPN just put us on in prime time during "Rivalry Week," and that narrative can be spun up into SOMEthing going forward.
And honestly, I don't remember a time when Dayton was the Evil Arch-Nemesis "rival" that some other team lusted to scalp. I only remember being the Virtuous Underdog in any rivalry that we may or may not have had over the past decade or two.
I don't want to do a full heel turn, mind you. But if URI wants to view UD as their own personal John Cena, and hate us while secretly respecting us, that would be fine with me, and I'd hope our guys would enjoy playing the role for the benefit of the narrative, too.
VCU is certainly right there, as well, albeit without the delightful "Dayton is the dominant half of the feud" aspect....

Thank you! I've been to enough ND football games in the past decade to know that's a major rivalry for The Irish. Not to mention the old-time NFL rivalry between the Cowboys and the Redskins. A little bit more than 1,000 miles there, too.

Everyone thinks they are ND's rival, MSU, Miami, Stanford, Mich, BC even Navy. And USC is not in their conference. We used to think we were their rival in bb but they never did.
And to whatever extent USC is a rival it extends only to one sport one game per year.
Zags and St. Mary's. Maybe. Many Zags think their rival is Washington.
If it is with St Marys its awfully one side with the Zags winning about 70% of the games. They may get a pass as they aren't close to almost anyone.
Surely URI would consider Umass or PC much more of a rival than us.

Dayton 75, Rhode Island 74: Williams' 3-pointer pushes Flyers over the top
http://www.providencejournal.com/spo...lyers-over-top
Dayton looked every bit like the league championship and NCAA Tournament hopeful the Rams planned to be at season's outset, and now URI's path to both of its primary goals looks to be considerably more difficult.

URI rival...
Hurley's comments were thoughtful, complementary. In Hurley's five years at URI they have lost 72 games by one point. Wow!
In my opinion, Dayton-URI have become intense rivals. Games over the past decade, or so, have been highly competitive...important to both programs...very often decided in the last seconds of play....exhilarating/heartbreaking on both sides. What else do you want from a rivalry?

I think you misread something there UAC. From the PJ article:
It was the 50th single-digit defeat of the 72 suffered by Hurley during his five seasons in Kingston, and URI fell to 12-19 in home games decided by nine points or less

Yes, I did, thank you. I read "single point" rather than "single digit". That error detracted from the point I was trying to make, i.e., URI and Dayton have become rivals on the basis of their important, heart-stopping battles over a relatively long time.
Just opinion.

i don't have a real problem with UC fans. Now that Huggins is gone they've classed it up.
Wait.
There is more then one school near there.
Hmmmmmm
Why would we have a problem with NKU? They are relatively new to division I?
Weird

Actually I guess you are looking at Conference numbers, which puts Kyle Davis #1 at a gaudy 59%, and X rounded off at 44% is 2nd.
Over all games, they have Crosby #1 at 47%. Then X at 43% and Kyle at 41%.
Kyle is shooting freethrows in conference play at 57%. We could conclude that Kyle should shoot his free throws from behind the arc.

BG was better than Hurley in almost every measurement. BG won 65% of his games at UD, and 55% in conference. BG was 10 percentage points better than Hurley in both categories. Gregory took us to two NCAA's and finally won a game. URI hasn't been to an NCAA since 1999.
I admit to this. Closer, but still no cigar.

The stats referring to X as our highest % three point shooter have been coming out with a minimum number of attempts, I think it was like minimum of 20 or 30 attempts.

Media Guide 3pt accuracy for a season is based on 30 three pointers MADE. At .426 as of the URI road game, that would be 11th best in a season, but he is 4 3ptrs MADE short.

That last URI drive included a definite walk, pushing foul and the ball clearly went off the Rhody player. They the refs give the ball to URI? Fortunately and inexplicably, a freshman did the throw-in and panicked, tossing it harmlessly into the abyss. URI fans were wondering why a more experienced senior didn't throw the ball in with, possibly, more accuracy. Glad it was a frazzled newbie. I love XW's description of the game: Rhodekill!

I totally agree with your whole post with one caveat, on their home floor in that game-deciding instant, the refs would call it blocking and let them shoot free throws 70% of the time. In that regard, I thought we dodged a bullet.
All that said I would love to hear the explanation by the refs as to why the refs looked at the replay and determined the ball went off Dayton. It was sooooo f98k95ing clear that it went off a URI thigh!!

I am pretty sure Terrell felt the same thing. Put his head down and drive.

Probably what the announcers said, that the replays were inconclusive from the angles they saw. Conclusive to you and I, but not from an objective standpoint.

How is it not objective? Possibly I benefit from an angle the refs don't have access to. It's pretty clear on my 70' Hi Def TV which may have benefited from an ESPN feed angle not available at courtside. I could accept that. If there were in my media room a blind mole could called it right.

Since none of the refs saw the ball hit the thigh of the URI player, they have to go to a replay. There are certain things they look for in a replay to overturn the original call and none were clear.
Did the ball clearly change direction? No.
Did the ball's rotation clearly change? No.
Did the uniform clearly bend/wrinkle from the force of the ball? No.
From the replays I can say with 100% certainty that the ball appeared to glance off the URI player's leg. But there was no CLEAR replay that definitively showed that to be fact. As much as I thought it should be UD's ball, if I were one of the refs I'd have given it to URI. And I bet Edwin Young would have done the same thing.

I watched it over and over and didn't feel it was conclusive that it came off that guy's thigh. The rotation of the ball was due to the weird way that KP ripped through the ball while it was in his arms and the Ram player rather than necessarily being from coming off his thigh. Neither good replay angle showed a definitive bounce off the leg.

I was hoping the mall cop would pick up the ball and carry it away!

Unbeliveable
Then I conclude that y'all did not have the ESPNU feed that I had, nor did they, and you collectively would uphold the bronze or pig iron standard that A10 refs hold themselves to every week. Which basically sucks.
Glad it didn't cost us the game.

I just replayed it and the announcers said the ball went off his leg. That is what I saw
