Dayton Basket Ball - For you NCAA Visitors

When the Marianist landed on the banks of the Great Miami River they eventually started St. Mary's School for Boy's. Later the brothers started to confer diploma's at the collegiate level and named the school St Mary's College.

But as things turned out the brothers took another step in the right direction changing the name to the University of Dayton. Or should I say THE University of Dayton (since a well know NCAA win against tOSU), the naming after the city would forever cement the city, townsfolk and neighboring areas to identify with a brand.

Although Dayton may have been a sleepy mid-west town to some in the early years, great things have come from this city. Not least of which is the Wright Brothers and a guy by the name of Kettering among others.

Taking the nickname, "The Flyers" put the final touches on the school's link to the city and its' history.

Every school has its' own story. Every town or city near a school has something invested in the nearby school. The thing that gets the people in Dayton going is that the hard work of the players on the court plays to those people that have over the years placed their faith in hard work, doing what is right and taking on all challenges.

Yes Dayton is just what you can expect from a city in the mid west during Winter. It is not sunny anyplace California or Florida. But when the bright lights of UD Arena are on for a Flyers home game, the temperature goes up, the chill is taken out of your bones ... and nothing can be finer than listening to the roar of fans there to see their hometown team play.

Not to take a disrespectful tone to any schools playing BB named St Mary's but there are plenty of them. It is hard without looking them up where a particular St. Mary's is located. It's not really a negative ... just that in Dayton we have a university named AND located within the same space, both geographically and emotionally.

When folks in the Dayton area see DAYTON flash up on the screen, most people hereabouts take pride in identifying with the name. So in the future, if you experience the Flyer fan base, just so you know, we have no less investment than the North Carolina, tOSU, KY, Stanford, Louisville fans. In fact in our history as the Dayton Flyers we have beaten those teams within the last 7 years. Winning a game or two from some of those teams going back quite a ways in fact.

As a Dayton fan we would like to play you all. Yes sometimes we may get our head handed to us. But we'd like to think that if we both play hard, play the right way and face your challenge you might find out that we have a great tradition here with great knowledgeable fans and we will kindly hand your head back to you too!

The TV people that have been here since, Oh about since 1969 to broadcast a game in the Arena along the banks of the Great Miami River have said it time and time again over the years ... one of the best venues' in College BB, with some of the most knowledgeable fans' in the stands!

So why don't your guys talk to my guys and we set up some games (home and away series) and let's play some ball!

Good luck!
