Golden Defense Matters Award - Richmond

Richmond stinks. Actually they're worse than that but I'm just being nice.

We had a couple Golden performers today...whose performance out-shined the others is yet to be determined.

At 7:00, I'm a bit surprised that the fake-king, Sir Widgette, didn't beat me to this Poll as I was out-of-town and just walked in the door, so I'd like to thank Sir W for taking his rightful spot as a faithful minion and patiently allowed me to get my son moved into his Buckeye dorm without being a pest...

All Hale our Flyers for their first A10 win of 2019...I predict at least 10 more!

At least...

Let the voting begin!

Sorry fake king rollo. I was busy doing 1,000 push ups, 1,500 sit ups, and then spent the last 5 hours admiring myself in the mirror.

I wanted your last fleeting minions to still look up to you before you slink into the sunset, weak and ashamed. No thanks necessary. Helping out senior citizens is a charity of mine.

By the way, I voted Cunningham. People can vote for someone else, but please don't post it and advertise your ignorance.

How good isn't Richmond?

Richmond only played one upper classman today and he wasn't a significant factor. They were all Freshmen and sophomores. Might be a force in a couple years.

Cunningham.

Few days ago I watch a movie called Shot In The Dark about Orr Academy in Chicago. The end of the movie is the state championship game against Morgan Park and you hear the game announcer and see a dunk by "Josh Cunningham." Happens quickly but it may have been the winning basket for Morgan Park but not sure.

How can Jordan Davis play 34 minutes in a game and score zero points? I see the statistics that he went 0 for 5. Is he playing such great defense that he needs to be on the floor that many minutes? Years ago, Larry Schellenberg played game after game delivering zero points but his defense and hustle and rebounding at 6’4” was very valuable. But, still he was a liability. If a guy is having a bad night then Grant needs to rotate him out to reduce his minutes. You can’t just pencil a guy in and not notice him as a coach. The shooting guard position needs to provide points. The opportunity for the ball to be in the hands of the shooting guard is high. Jordan Davis played more minutes at 34 than any other player! Why? Is Cohill playing so badly in practice?

I see Policelli was getting schooled during the game by Grant. He was out of position yet again. Grant used a clipboard to draw him the play and show him what he was doing wrong. That was embarrassing for Policelli in front of 14,000 people.

What was Crutcher, Landers and other bystanders including Toppin yakking it up with the two referees? Crutcher was talking then the referee said something and then Landers started laughing. Was anyone close enough to hear the conversation? I am not complaining just curious? I believe that players should try to befriend the referees, if possible. They are human beings too? Rollo, do you ever yak that much with the players? It seemed a little unprofessional or even a homer move by the referees? However, the score at that point was out of sight.

Yes and No.

Small talk is encouraged if it has a purpose...like to clarify a call or just make a light-hearted comment to reduce and control emotions...(or to comment on a hot cheerleader ). But only during dead ball situations.

In no way, shape or form is a ref supposed to 'escalate' a situation...we should stay neutral, be assertive and/or calming, which isn't easy in an emotional, testosterone fueled contest.

If a player or coach escalates anything, that's when a technical foul needs to be assessed. But we're supposed to avoid those situations when possible.

Funny how two people see the same thing and come away with totally different perspectives. I too saw Grant coaching up Frankie with a clip board on the sidelines during a free throw. I came away with a positive impression of both Grant and Frankie. With Matos out, we need to get more out of Frankie as soon as possible, but certainly sometime over the next 30 days. I was impressed both coach and player was using every opportunity as a learning opportunity. I was impressed it happened during a game ( in front of 12800). Why wait until a video session this week? All hands on deck are working to get this young man to a level where he can contribute more minutes to help give starters a much needed break during games. And hitting that 3 was great. Nothing like a shot of confidence to help a young player take another step forward. I wasn’t thinking scoring help out of Frankie this year. More come in and do no harm minutes. But for a team that needs 3 point help, I’ll take it from anyone even in very limited minutes. Go Frankie. Go AG. Find a way to contribute and help this team. Keep working hard and coaching up during free throws if it gets us there sooner rather than later.

From what I saw on TV when they first came back from commercial it looked like Trey was motioning about tucking shirts in so that's what I thought they were talking about with the ref. And Trey, although it has been better this year, has had his shirt untucked a lot to the point where I questioned many times on this board whether his uniform actually fit him or not.

I also got the impression that the confab with AG and Frankie was a teaching moment not and embarrassment moment.

I didn't see the actual exchange between Crutcher, Landers and the refs, but if one of the refs was TV Ted Valentine, it's understandable.

Rollo, do you have a nickname amongst your (cough cough)...peers? Or would you like Priders to conduct a Rollo Poll to come up with one?

To answer from above, Jordan was much improved earlier in the year at attacking the rim and getting to the line, it seems like that aspect of his game has dissapeared, he hesitates to attack, and when he does shoot, it appears that he releases his shot before reaching the apex of his jumper, like he shots it too quick. I'm no expert; so take that observation for what its worth. It appears that his confidence is shot.

Who the hell else is Grant going to bring in at this point? Cohill who attacks the rim even less and is shooting similarly bad, perhaps even worse? Frankie? Keep in mind, Davis is the psuedo backup PG, so if Cohill catches a breather, Davis is almost always out there as well with Cohill playing the 2.

TBF, why would Jordan attack the rim yesterday when Cunningham and Toppin were killing it down there, and Crutcher when he started driving to the hole for shot/assist was killing it. Some games, the situation demands you only take certain types of shots compared to other games. If they needed JD to drive to the hole, I have no doubt he could have. It just wasn't necessary.

Since the 2000-01 season, this is only the second instance of a player scoring 0 pts while playing at least 34 minutes. Darrell Davis had 35 minutes, and no points, last year against Saint Marys. He went 0-11 from the floor, including 0-3 from 3 pt land. No free throws attempted.

(But Xeyrius Williams led the team with 16 points! )

Gonna be hard for anyone else to develop any rhythm and try to get into attacking the rim when they're sitting on the bench all the time.

Davis is 3rd on the team in blocks and steals, 1 behind Trey Landers on each

Of the games I've seen he seems to me like he's playing good defense. He's active and aggressive on the defensive end.

He shot nearly 40% last year so he's certainly capable of making shots. What happened to him is the biggest mystery of the season to me. I keep waiting for him to have a break out game but I'm starting to wonder if this isn't like Baby D's soph. year

Drives me absolutely nuts. He didn’t look very aggressive with the ball yesterday. Honestly, as dominant as the inside game was, it didn’t matter. But ALL our guards better start hitting some jumpers before a better team doubles the inside guys all game.

Think of how strong the inside game could be if we were an average perimeter shooting team.

None the less, if the incoming recruits and Matos can shoot next year, could see some guys getting the minutes cut back.

Great response. Fantastic user name!

I seem to remember Jordan pretty much only taking set 3 point shots last season. He drove to the hoop only occasionally. We know he is driving more this year but I also think most of his 3 point shots are while he is on the move ala Jordan Sibert vs Boise St. I know he has been missing some wide open set 3s now but I think the early season misses on the move affected him.

Rollo, do you ever yak that much with the players? It seemed a little unprofessional or even a homer move by the referees? However, the score at that point was out of sight.

Probably told the joke about the guy that walks into the bar, and tells the bartender he can make the horse at the end of the bar laugh, then cry.....

Exactly. Jordan is great in most aspects of the game. He is a soph averaging 9 pts a game, and has about half the turnovers of most of the other guys. The kid is a stud, who is in a three point slump. It happens. He is not Baby D or close to it.

My ignorance is bliss; Westerfield prepared his teammates for hard nose D, and drove the ball into teeth of the defense, and put it in with Authority.

I love Jack Westerfield.

Other than Obi, I think everybody's minutes are likely to be cut back, and significantly so for some.

Hopefully the slump is over. Jordan is officially a stud!
