Hofstra (Charleston Classic) Game Thread
Very exciting opener on Friday Night... A lot of stuff to like but I lot of stuff to improve upon... Go on the road and continue to build for this young and "new" team. Time to head down to South Carolina for a business trip and take on an average Hofstra team who beat Army at home by 3 in their opener (they play Monday Night as well). They went 15-17 last year (7-11 in the CAA)
Game is at 7:30 PM on Thursday Night and will be shown on ESPNU.
Potential Starting Lineup:
G 4 Desure Buie 6’0” 160 JR Bronx, NY
G 3 Justin Wright-Foreman 6’1” 185 JR Queens, NY
G 20 Jalen Ray 6’2” 175 FR Hampton, VA
F 12 Joel Angus III 6’6” 240 GS Brooklyn, NY
C 11 Rokas Gustys 6’9” 260 SR Kaunas, Lithuania
Wright-Foreman is easily their best player... Led their team in scoring last year as a sophomore at 18 PPG... Went for 25 points (on 25 shots) 6 rebounds 5 assists in their opener... Gustys averaged 12.1 rebounds a night last year (had 12 in the opener)
Quick stat they only played 7 guys in their season opener, so maybe we can wear them down.
Go Take care of business in our opening game!
Continue to Improve! Go UD!

If you want an in-depth review of Hofstra, page down to the them on this CAA preview:
https://sportsaction.io/blog/college...nside-the-caa/
Quick summary is that they have a lot of offense, but they played a zone defense last year that was really bad.

So 2 things scare me:
the preview says they run an excellent pick and roll offense. The way the Flyers played off the ball defense on Friday leads me to believe a good pick and roll offense will leave them grasping as players roll to the basket for multiple easy layups.
The preview mentions their 2-3 zone, and while they say it was vanilla, I didn't see enough crisp passing, any sort of inside-out game and little in the way of perimeter shooting to make me think that the offense I saw on Friday would struggle vs a zone.

19.5?? That's easy money. Take the points and enjoy a nice pay day.

It just changed to UD -2.5. They must have made a mistake posting the -19.5.
Only -2.5? This is going to be a much, much tighter game than I was expecting.

-2.5 is more in line with what I was expecting. I expect a win, but won't be surprised at all if UD loses in a close one

Going off the numbers ESPN puts into their matchup predictor:
- Based on their BPI ranking Hofstra has a 56.7% chance of winning. (They are ranked 138th, we are ranked 164th. Ball St is 113th)
- Based on their NumberFire projections - they give us a 77% chance to win by an average score of 77 - 70.
- Based on their TeamRankings projection, we win by an average of 71 - 68.
- KenPom has us with a 53% chance at 72-71
What does all that mean? Nothing. LET'S GO FLYERS!!!

I had the same thought - then remembered we really only played 7 too (Kostas played 6 minutes).
We get Svoboda back, but not sure Kostas/Pierce are ready for more than they got in game one just yet. So we may be at 8 with a few minutes from a 9th.
In their 2nd game they played 8 guys at least 14 minutes. So we may not get a numbers advantage.

So Pierce is not ready for more than zero minutes??? If right, we'd best red shirt him for next year. If he can't help us vs Hofsta, then he's of little value against anyone else.

I guess I'm expecting a slow progression for him. The fact that he got 0 was a little surprising for me. I didn't expect him to get much, but I thought he would get in.
After getting 0 - I'd be surprised if he suddenly was getting any kind of significant time tomorrow.

With 3 games in 4 days, they're going to need all hands on deck. I expect Pierce to see some action over the next few days.

After we blew the 14 point lead, his chances diminished. We know he has trimmed down, but that doesn't mean his conditioning to run the floor is there yet. Coach knows the status of the whole package, and he just might not have "it" yet.

How are we only favored by 1.5? No offense to Hofstra, but they have not been any good in a while.
Just feels like we should be favored by significantly more.

That's a fair point. It does increase the odds of seeing him. I would love to see him get 10 minutes tonight. I'm just not counting on it. Same for Kostas. Would love to see him get 10-15.

You have to remember that Vegas doesn't actually care what they think the outcome of the game is when they set the line. They set the line based on what the bettors think will happen. They need 50% of the action on both sides.
The line was -2.5. Now it's -1.5. That means the money is coming in on Hofstra.
Not sure how anyone can bet on our games right now. I follow this team daily and I still don't know what we have...

The Hoff's 2 bigs have some beef down low at 240 and 260. We might want to get Pierce 5-8 minutes just to have that presence inside and make their bigs take some hits from another big. If he can hold down the inside defensively and maybe grab a few rebounds, that 5-8 minutes could be invaluable in spelling Josh, Trey, X-Man, and maybe Matej and Kostas from having to body up on bigger players.

Now UD -3.5, that is better.
And on second thought, Hofstra finished at #130 and #54 in the rpi the last two years, so that explains the tighter line.

Per Keith Waleskowski (subbing for Bucky) on the pregame show, Hofstra will play zone about 65% of the time.

Hated Dayton’s lack of movement offensively versus Ball State and same today. Is AG running NBA offense or offense from Bama/VCU/FL?

Welp.
On another note I still hate these uniforms because the #'s are impossible to see on TV. Hard to tell if it's Crosby, Crutcher, or Jordan Davis at times.

We can't hit $#!* and they're hitting a lot. I have a weird confidence about this one, that we'll steady the ship, their shooting % will regress to the mean, and we'll take care of business.

Difference in the game; they are 5/8 from 3 and UD is 1/8. Dayton is actually +5 on possessions which is amazing (+2 offensive rebounds and +3 turnovers as Flyers have 3 left). If you told me Dayton would be +5 possessions 3:43 left in the 1H, I would say Flyers up by 5.
Hofstra shooting 28% from 3 going into the game and Dayton 25%.
BTW, Kostas looks much better than anticipated, thought would be a total project but 4 points and 6 rebounds in 7 minutes!?!!??!

I vote 2 - New Players. When 1/2 your team is new, and they're not 4-5 Star recruits, ability to play within a system is important. And when all of your returnees are just learning the system, that's an issue.

I know and that's why I disliked them last year and again this year, the gradient makes them look dirty...and the whites are worse.

Cannot finish 1H poorly like versus Ball State. Final 1 minute key. Down 30-28. Gotta be down 4 or less at the half.

Down 5 at the break isn't bad after the start.
I thought Kostas played well after getting a few minutes in row on the court with Cunningham in foul trouble.
Wish UD could have gotten a stop on that last possession. Would have preferred AG just sticking with straight man rather than the 1-3-1 look and then switching into man once Hofstra started their offense.

Last drive way too easy. Just like last drive in 2H of Ball State game. Keep the ball in front of you and then please rotate with help defense.
I am watching this from London with a flight back in about 8 hours. Come on Dayton.

Another amazing UD crowd. We are all over Charleston. In the arena we likely have as many fans as the other 7 teams combined. I think Hofsta has about 8, no six two people messed up and wore Columbia blue. The Flyer pep band and Dr Willie really bringing it both at the pregame reception and now at the game. Really working the electric coat .!

Anybody else notice that UD is defending wing ball screens with the screeners defender always staying baseline side and the guard staying high and above the screen?
Didn't remember them playing screens that way against Ball St.

Dayton is so much more athletic than Hofstra. I would like to see AG bring out full court press rather than the 1-3-1 half court.

Agreed, let anyone but Pemberton and Wright-Foreman beat Dayton. They are 10/21 FG including 5/9 from 3 (so 5/12 from 2) with 32 points.

No help defense again on lay-up; then Crosby being Crosby. Ugh. Cut it to 4 and mysterious foul on Landers, it was clean.
Cut it to 2 or 4 and they go on a run.
