My concern now is that any really promising player in the A10 looking to upgrade after a year or 2. We saw that constantly at Fordham. I do think UD because of the environment and money spent on bball is unique but it would not be good if the rest of the conference goes that way.

Duke
Interesting from a UD perspective is that 1) he played HS ball with Obi & 2) his dad was an assistant one year at OKC with Grant. Also, his brother is a '21 Duke commit.

Don't know if it's true but I read that he and Obi are friends
Looking at what he's done so far I would think with the way Duke recruits he'd have some stiff competition there to get minutes
How long these guys stay in school I don't know but Duke has a five star combo guard and a five star wing coming in for 2020. His brother is a 5 star wing for 2021

This stuff with Rhode Island really hits home on how successful the culture and chemistry within the program that Coach Grant has built is important

@JonRothstein
Interesting Stat:
A year ago, 14 mid-major players who averaged in double-figures during the 18-19 season opted to grad transfer to power conferences.
None averaged in double-figures last season.

Actually Griffin and Obi are from the same hometown (Ossining), but Griffin went to Archbishop Stepinac in nearby White Plains.

2 questions:
1-What has anyone heard about Moulaye? I've heard zero - by now we were hearing loads on Obi. That concerns me.
2-How much contact can coaches have with transfers/recruits during this virus time-out? We need to capitalize on AG/OBI.

Probably true. I think with a lot of these grad transfers you hope for more upside than what they've shown but if you strike it's out it's only a one year commitment

My understanding is they can't host recruits on campus or visit them but they can communicate via phone/text/electronically right now

I'm not sure they can actually call a recruit. They can text the recruit and have the recruit call them though.

^ I'd still take him if he were so inclined (or tell him to take the Andres Sandavol route and do a year of Juco, or even sit out a full year, then transfer into UD and be ready to play right away if possible.
For the record, I doubt its a possibility, just sayin if he wanted to jump ship I wouldn't mind him at UD; the kid looks like he could be very good in another season or 2.

Not saying Rhode Island will go 29-2 any time soon. Just saying, there is such a thing as addition by subtraction (and, in most of the cases of the guys who left UD, that was the case).

Last night on the local news here in RI they had an interview with Cox and he said the Martin departure was in the works for a little while and indicated Martin said he wants to play at a higher level. He also said he doesn't see it as an indictment against the program but more of an indictment of the NCAA and the current transfer culture of high majors poaching mid and low majors. He also said it was difficult to "re-recruit" Martin back to URI because of the coronavirus situation. They ended the piece by saying that they are hopeful that Fatts stays with the program...not a too reassuring way to end the piece...YIKES!

If true, and actually even prior to that tidbit, you have to wonder how safe David Cox's job is. There were already rumblings from fans at how the season fell apart and several (perhaps their versions of UDScott) that he wasn't cut out for the job. But with so much talent leaving there has to be something behind the scenes. I don't know what kind of options he has in terms of being a Grad Transfer, but Fatts Russell would be highly sought after if he could graduate by the end of the summer and play next season. Heck he'd probably be highly sought after even if he had to sit a season.

Other than Tyrese Martin's announcement and Jermaine Harris's ominous post, have other Rhode Island players announced an intention to transfer or entered the portal?
I've seen a lot of message board chatter but haven't seen much real reporting on any kind of exodus.

I believe they now have 10 transfers in the last two seasons, although the news said last night that Martin is by far the biggest loss so not sure how good the others are.

I think when they went to the portal system and redid the transfer they did away this
The Big 10 used to have this rule and when Micah Potter transferred from Ohio State to Wisconsin he only did the one year
I don't think coaches or conferences can block restrict transfers like they used to

Sources: With both on and off campus recruiting currently suspended in college basketball, several coaches are using both FaceTime and ZOOM to give virtual tours for potential prospects who can't physically get on campus.

I think the transfer situation is just going to get worse and worse. UD will not be immune to it...especially if they waive the 1 yr sit rule. We'll win some and we'll lose some. I just know attendance at the Blue Red game will become must see TV each year!

My company is starting to explore virtual reality ( wearing the oculus type visors) for training, etc. UD needs to get all over that and send full high-def tours of the campus and facilities to recruits. UD could create a mind blowing high def tour, with Arena crowd sounds, CAG addressing the team (and looking at the recruit as if he was there), etc.
Imagine a youngster sitting in his mom's living room wearing a specially loaded oculus in a Virtual UD Arena, standing half court with a raucous live crowd in the last 2 minutes of a game. A teammate dishing him the ball and shooting a game winning shot. The kid could walk around and look up into the crowd like he was there. Easily done today....

Illinois Transfer Guard Alan Griffin... Sit 1 Play 2
"Some transfers are expected, but Alan Griffin surprised many earlier this week when he made his intentions known via Twitter that he would be leaving the Illinois program after two years. Griffin has only started two games in his career, but he made great strides from his freshman to sophomore years. He averaged more than six points and three more rebounds while improving his 3-point percentage to over 40 percent from the perimeter.
He comes from a great pedigree: His father is former NBA veteran Adrian Griffin, and his younger brother is five-star Duke recruit AJ Griffin. There has been talk about him joining forces with his brother at Duke, but his list of suitors is a long one. If there is one dark horse to monitor, it is Dayton."

I hope Jacob is successful and happy right where he is. But, if that’s not meant to be, I wouldn’t mind him following Obi to UD. At a minimum, he’s a capable player, of presumably good character, from a good family. In CAG’s program, those last 2 traits are imperative.

Jacob will always be compared to his brother. It doesn't matter where he is going to school. With the fan group that we have at UD, I am sure they would be smart enough to know that there will only be one Obi and not expect the same from his brother. Ken May had a nice career at UD and he certainly followed a star brother.

Sure it matters. He can't stop being Obi's brother, naturally, but he'll have his own expectations at another school that he'll define. It's human nature and the pressure he might put on himself can be enormous not to mention that of crazed UD fans.Huge shoes to fill, try to fill or be expected to fill.
Jacob might just want to hear his OWN name, not as Obi's brother.

Wichita State has another one in the transfer portal: Asbjorn Midtgaard.
That makes 7 scholarship guys and one-walk on that have left Gregg Marshall and the Shockers.
@GoodmanHoops
Been told by sources there still might be one more Wichita State player who transfers.

If things are tough and you’re not happy, you turn to family. As long as Jacob is happy with the situation at URI, he will stay there. But if things go south, I think he would transfer to UD. The Toppins will always be family at UD. Sure the student section stepped out of bounds with the Obi is better chant, but Roni said after that game she knew they were just being college kids. I think Roni would support a transfer to UD if URI doesn’t work out.
Fatts declared for the draft today, and like Jalen, he’ll return to URI. We’ll see how Cox works out this next season. That’s the big question mark.

Alan Griffin would be a huge kid to land, given his father's connections to CAG, hard to imagine that he's not serious. I do wonder how much the draw of playing with his little bother @ Duke is (hey maybe we should offer his little brother as well )
What the heck is happening @ WSU? It was only a few years ago that they were the toast of the mid majors (well aside from Gonzaga) I assume they had some seniors, add in 7 transfers that is a huge amount of turnover.

Love this fit... dude's game reminds me of Trey except with a smoother stroke.
Trey played out of his mind this year, if we could get that again on next year's team except a bit taller. I'm in.

Watched all of his you tube videos and I like his game as well! Seems to be a good three point shooter! Only shoots 67.6% from the free throw line but Landers free throw percentage was worse at 60%. It was unbelievable because Landers always made his free throws if he was fouled in the act of shooting or an and one with no stoppage but if there was a time out or any kind of stoppage he would miss his free throw upon resuming play!

I tried to look up the two year in the NCAA transfer rules guidelines. I could not find it. Maybe you could locate it for us?
The rules have changed a lot. At one time, you have to get permission to transfer. There was a famous case of Martelli refusing to grant a transfer. That has all changed.

The A10 has almost nothing on their website. I am pretty sure when the public started pushing back on restricting transfers, and conferences started allowing transfers within conference that the A10 was one of the conferences that followed suit with that. I could be wrong, but I am almost positive they backed down as well.

Google is your friend:
“Second, reflective of the existing growing trends within the Division I landscape, the coaches and athletic directors engaged in an extensive discussion regarding the Atlantic 10 intra-conference transfer policies, and the league rescinded a restrictive policy related to Olympic sport transfers to fully align with existing NCAA undergraduate transfer policies, allowing for the one-time transfer relief within the current legislation.”

For those who would still ask “So...what is the policy?” the A10 agreed in May 2016 to rescind the more restrictive two-year transfer rule and align with the NCAA policy (currently one year but subject to removal in a vote later this spring).

On a side note, I think that vote timeline was just recently moved from April to June. Not really sure why unless there is a meeting involved. Otherwise you could mail-in votes or conference call/email vote.

The link u posted says nothing about the rule being rescinded. Where did u find that? If I am wrong, my apologies. Either way, arent schools still allowed to block transfers to certain schools? I dont recall an A10 to A10 transfer. Gotta believe there is a reason for that.

USC makes sense, but Spokane is 1,203 miles from LA!
Nineteen hours and fifty six minutes - traffic is light.

The thing that sticks out to me on him is that he's got got good rebounding numbers for a wing. Seems like he's someone who could be a nice fit a 4 guard line up
He played grassroots for the New York Lightening. Maybe it was Archie's staff but I think someone had a connect there at one point

Griffin as a sit out (I'm assuming if the rule gets changed it won't go in immediately) and Vaughn as grad. That would be a nice haul

@RivalsPortal
. Big wins for the Rams on the transfer front. Two big bodies that should leave an immediate mark on the program. Former Rivals150 prospects

The David Cox tenure at Rhody is going to be a volatile one.

No one here seemed too interested in the Mitchells due to potential headcase concerns. Wish them well at Rhode.

So no better time than now for Jacob to come to UD!
Yes, I know chances are very very slim, but does not hurt to dream, especially when you read a report that he is better than Obi was at the age he is now!

I think if Jacob wanted to be here he would have came out of high school. For whatever reason, shadow of Obi or something else, he wanted to go a different route

Last I checked the transfer portal is full of players who came to the conclusion their initial decision out of high school was the right one - for whatever reason.

Did I miss something, has Jacob indicated he is thinking of leaving URI?

To the best of my knowledge no, someone joked about it awhile back on one of these threads. Then today when the two big guys transfered to RI, I threw some gas on the fire.

Obi is not coming back, nor probably is someone equal to him. Jacob is a nice player, but there is no indication he is the next Obi. Lots of brothers out there who never match up to stud brothers. Obi is gone, Jacob did not come here, and is not Obi, let's move on.

But what if the younger brother in this case is better than the older like Frank the Tank, what if UD had the lesser of two brothers?
There is nothing to indicate that Jacob is considering transferring, the only conjuncture is because of the volume of transfers out of Rhody last week. There has not been a word anywhere indicating that Jacob is unhappy (or happy for that matter). I wish nothing but the best for the young kid, except when he plays UD.

Jeff Borzello@jeffborzello

Western Michigan forward Brandon Johnson is expected to graduate and transfer, sources told ESPN. Third-team All-MAC this past season, averaged 15.4 points and 8.1 rebounds.
Bring the Noise! Hopefully the staff goes all-in on him... Would be an ideal Obi "Replacement"
A Johnson & Griffin combo coming into the program would be awesome
