Nine Is Enough

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- When the University of Dayton Flyers step on the court for their one and only exhibition game on November 2nd vs. Capital, they will dress only nine scholarship players:

Josh Cunningham, Obi Toppin, Frankie Policelli, Trey Landers, Jordan Davis, Jalen Crutcher, Jhery Matos, Ryan Mikesell and Dwayne Cohill.

There has been some wailing and lamentation on the UD Pride MB about the evils of entering the season with less than a full thirteen-man roster. If history has taught us anything, it is, as George Gershwin so eloquently put it, “Ain’t necessarily so.” One need only look back at the 2014-2015 edition of the Red & Blue that featured a total of six scholarship players plus super walk-on Bobby Wehrli. That squad still ended up making the Big Dance and winning two games before eventually falling to Oklahoma.

Needless to say, the Flyers must avoid the injury bug, particularly to Crutcher and Cunningham. Do that and they will be fine with only nine guys in uniform.

Almost as important as the nine guys who will suit up for AG are three additional hoopsters who will not:

Rodney Chatman, Jordy Tshimanga and Ibi Watson.

Every day in practice Chatman will push UD’s only current PG Jalen Crutcher; Jordy will present the unique challenge of facing a 6’11” shot blocker and Ibi the difficulty in covering a jump-out-of-the gym SF. And the beauty part is that all three will be eligible next year.

Is it November yet?
