Brian Roberts 16-17 NBA Season thread
Hard to believe, but BR will be 31 in December and is entering his 5th NBA season.
Here's a good article from the Hornet's SB Nation website on Brian Roberts and his return to Charlotte. From the tone of the article, it sure sounds like he is glad to be back in Charlotte and they are glad to have him. His family never left Charlotte after the trade last year, so I'm sure they are glad to have him back in Charlotte also.

I hope he sticks. It's the club's job to create competition at all positions, so they will probably give a number of guards a look this preseason. But Brian has all the planets lined up and appears ready for the challenge. Could not happen to a better man.

Agreed. Great he's cashing checks and various reports that he is SMART with the money. This guy wants to play though and he deserves to. Im obviously absurdly biased but this guy should not be rotting on the bench

I think the Cavs could use him. Their only real back-up PG is Kay Felder from Oakland. I think the jury is still out as to whether he will make it. In the meantime BT could fill the role.

FWIW, Brian played 4min and scored 2pts against Indiana on 11/7, so this wasn't his first action of the year.
The Hornets and BR both knew what they were getting when they signed this contract. The Hornets got a veteran who knows their system and is an insurance policy if anything happens to Walker or Sessions. And Roberts got to rejoin a team and coaching staff he knows in a city his family still lives and earn $1.05m this year. Good deal for both sides.

BR says he tries to stay in touch with UD program as much as he can, and has great memories of being able to play in front of 13,000 fans.

Brian Roberts will be inducted into the UD Hall of Fame this Saturday. I just checked the Hornets schedule and they have a game tomorrow and the next one not until the 23rd. So I am hoping that points to him being in attendance.

Looks like Brob may be headed to Greece to play for Olympiacos this year. He will get paid well and will actually get to play in games. For those unfamiliar with Greek hoops Olympiacos is one of the traditional powers and went 25-1 last year in Greece and shared the title with Panathanikos. He will also get to play in Euroleague where Olympiacos lost in the championship game last season. So basically he'll be playing for the 2nd best team in Europe last year.

I am not sure that is the case. The NBA minimum for a play with 5 years experience is just above 1.7mil. There was only one player Olympiacos that made more than that last year, and only 17 players in all of Europe that made more than that. If I had to guess he is looking for more PT or their just isn't any interests from NBA teams.

The club oftentimes will pay your taxes to the country you are playing in. That American who is playing overseas may also receive credit with the United States government for paying their taxes. Further, most European clubs commonly pay for a player’s living expenses. That includes providing a player with a car and lodging. So the player in Europe can be saved from taxes and the more expensive living expenses.

I think it's pretty common they take care of your Euro taxes

US citizens are one of the few countries where you owe tax on income even if resident of say Dubai which has no income tax. You get a credit from foreign taxes paid, but you will not lower your income tax rates by playing overseas. Generally European taxes higher than U.S. so pay European and pay no U.S. as get credit for foreign taxes. If playing where taxes lower like Dubai, you then will pay U.S. taxes basically as if you were earning the income in the U.S.
This is NOT tax advice, but experience from a former expat and experience having people work on my team all over the world.

Unless he relinquishes his American citizenship he will pay US income tax on his Euro salary. Minus what he pays in income tax to Greece.

IMO the difference in salaries is inconsequential between the NBA and Greece when your goal is, and always has been, to play in the best basketball league in the world. If he could have gotten a deal consistent with his tenure and the CBA rules, he would have taken it. Good for him that he has an alternative.

With five years in the NBA, he's also now pension eligible. So, it's a good time for him to actually get playing time to match that nice overseas salary.

Brian Roberts with the 10th best Free-Throw shooting season ever in NBA history:
https://www.basketball-reference.com...ct_season.html
Better free-throw percentage than the best season of Bird, Curry, Nash, Nowitzki, or Reggie Miller.
And they can't take that away from him. Actually, well, I guess they can if one other guy shoots 94% free throws some year.

Wish we could get one of our current players to shoot .9398%. What percentage did Damon Goodwin shoot in his best season? He holds the current UD record if I'm not mistaken.

The salary minimum for a 5 year veteran is $2,056,446. Since the league is basically running on a rob-the-poor-to-feed-the-rich philosophy, for BRob and a covey of other journeymen players, more money is not the issue. Finding and hanging on to a job is the real issue.
Many clubs can't afford a 5th year 3rd string player. They look to the 2nd round of the draft or free agency for a younger cheaper player. For Charlotte, enter Briante Weber.

I googled and Damon Goodwin's free throw percentage was .931 his senior year in 1985-86.

So he's getting $2 million a year(which is basically what his NBA veteran minimum would be) and will actually get to play. Sounds pretty good to me.
