St. Mary's Institute Run in the Tournament
How many of you forgot the anniversary date of 4 years ago yesterday?
I know most of you were going tit for tat with a few folks over Svoboda, Crosby, Pierce and whom ever else. Who's transfering, who's no good (PERIOD), etc.
Well ya'll missed the event of this century (so far I hope ). Yes March 20 2014 began the run ....
Who can't remember Vee's kiss off the glass that will be remembered for a long time?
Let us reflect on that occasion!
03/20/2014
12:15 pm, CBS 11 Seed Dayton vs. No. 22 & 6 Seeded Ohio State
Second round W 60–59 Record 24–10
Where: First Niagara Center (19,260) Buffalo, NY
I note that it was called 'the second round' at that time as the 'play in game' or whatever they call it now used to be considered the First Round. (This year it is not considered a 1st Round Game.)
My heart was in my throat when OSU had the opportunity for a last shot and it was taken down the court all the while I was thinking "Don't foul! Don't foul!" Then "Miss it! Miss it!".
And then the headlines " The University of Dayton "
Man those were the days.
Any one have a positive remembrance of the game?
Were you there?
This is a positive experience thread.
All grumpy old men, party poopers, naysayers and such please keep out!

My wife was at work and my son at school and it was my day off. That was the year of the Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge. My boss, an OSU fan, told me the day before I was fired if UD won.
With no one home I went to the local watering hole in this Mercer County town. The bar was pretty full for a Thursday afternoon and evenly split for the teams. I put my head down for the last play and heard the crowd and assumed Dayton lost. A gentleman I met that day, turns out it was my wife's cousin, told me Dayton won. I stood up and said, "Woo hoo, I just lost a billion dollars, and my job." People thought I was serious. That was a fun day.
Two days later, after the Syracuse win, I went outside and yelled, "WE ARE" expecting to answer it myself. But then, from somewhere else in town came the reply, "UD!"
I asked my wife and son of they did it, but they did not.

Drove from Cleveland to Buffalo. Met my brother driving in from NJ.
Had a hard time watching the last minutes. Screamed when we won.
One daughter graduated the year before from OSU an the other one was a freshman.
I may be a bad father but I did not feel bad for either of them.
Drove back home.
Drove back to Buffalo on Saturday with my wife's cousin who is as big of a Syracuse fan as I am a Flyer fan.
Met my 2 brother-in-laws that drove in from Syracuse with my wife's cousin's father.
My brother drove back in from NJ.
The plan was to all meet and watch the 2nd game together.
Only one brother-in-law showed. Wife's cousin did not show. The other brother-in-law had to drive back to Syracuse with his uncle who b!tched the whole way back.
Enjoyed beers at a bar across the street from the arena.
Best sporting weekend of my life. Followed by another week of enjoyment.
Badly want to repeat it.

Can't speak for anyone else but even at 75 I can still think of more than one subject at a time. To engage in one topic does not eliminate my interest or memories of another more dear event.
I often replay the games of both the men's and women's elite 8 runs. At my age may never see it repeat.
I live in the moment but relish the past accomplishments.

I was driving through West Virginia with an Ohio State alumni. Reception was terrible in the mountains. All during the second half, the game would go in and out. We partially heard the final minute of the game and heard Larry scream when the Flyers won.
After we heard the final score, he turned to me and asked if we could still be friends. I said, "Yes. Of course." [Gracious winner...]
I made it to Memphis.
My godfather, a season ticket holder since the Fieldhouse days, passed away a few hours after the Florida loss. Brought me down quickly after a great tournament run.

Was watching on my laptop at work (while working on my desktop). When Vee’s floater went in, I let loose with a victorious “YESSS!” In my office of mostly tOSU fans. Didn’t say anything else. Didn’t need to.

My story is boring compared to the rest of you, but took a 3 hour lunch break at Roosters by the Dayton Mall. The place was packed and probably about 90% were for UD. Ended up at a table with 3 complete strangers, none of us knew anyone else that day but all enjoyed the game. Strange how quiet the place was the last few seconds of the game, as we were all afraid of what we feared might happen. Pandemonium once we won!

Despite living in California, made it to Buffalo, Memphis, Dayton, Columbus, St Louis, and Indianapolis. Went with my now 12 year old son and my in-laws do all locations as well as my parents to Memphis. Met Jim Nance last year on the flight from San franciaco to Indianapolis. We ran into him days later at the hotel after the loss and he remembered my son's name and spoke to us for 5-10 minutes.
My son and I are totally bummed we are not following the Flyers in the NCAA for a 5th straight year.
Sent form mobile so sorry for typos.

I was in Dubai on my way home from Afghanistan! Followed the game on the Pride Game Thread at my hotel! UD was up but OSU was making their comeback and had just gone ahead when I had to leave the hotel for the airport!!
I just knew we had lost, so, when I got to the airport I used the airport's computer kiosk to see what had happened! The looks I got from my reaction when I saw we had won!!
What a homecoming present!!
Go Flyers!!

Watched in my man cave with 3 fellow alumni brothers. As soon as Craft missed the phone rang...my UD frosh son calling from the ghetto...screaming/crying himself hoarse. The scene practically repeated itself 2 days later post-Syracuse victory. Spent the next weekend in Memphis...what a great couple of weeks! With our 4 straight NCAAs corresponding to my son's undergrad years well, I don't believe he quite understands how fortunate he was.

All I can say is if Dyshawn Pierre was as nervous as I was when he went to the FT line to shoot 3, he would've airballed one and bricked the other two. He became one of my all-time favorites that day.

I was watching the OSU game at my house with Smitty10 and Maddog.
They were going on and on about what a "bum" Alex Gavrilovic was, how Khari Price needed to go, what terrible a coach Archie was... and then after Craft's shot rolled off the rim - I never saw or heard from them again!
You did say only "positive experience" in this thread, right?

Now that's funny. I never wavered on Archie. Not once. I even predicted with pride that Gavs would get into the Stanford game and when he did, I was happy because he was needed. So that should be all you need to know is that I don't pick on all coaches or all players, just the ones who suck.

Most enjoyable and exciting 10 days of my life, short of the birth of my kids.
Was fortunate enough to get to Memphis with some UD die hards and take in the entire festivities and celebration. Met and hung with some UD legends like Chapman, Perryman, Waleskowski and Finn, etc. Did my first keg stand in over 15 years at the pregame party in the pavilion before the game. I have some very memorable pics, including the keg stand.
Also a true story, my wife is a SLU grad and we have SLU season tix, for 10 years now. I moved the tickets to behind the visitors' bench about 5 or 6 years ago so I could sit with my peeps. After I witnessed the GAME that actually started this run, the upset of SLU on their senior night (without that win, we probably don't even get a bid), my wife didn't speak to me for like a week.
Proceed to the Sweet 16. I have daughter that needs to be in Kansas City that weekend and another that had a softball tournament in STL. I told my wife in that if Dayton made it, I pretty much had to go, as Memphis was an easy drive from STL. She kind of casually nodded and really didn't give it much consideration since she didn't believe UD would win. I had explained to her that this could be a once in a lifetime for a Flyer fan and I committed to us doing the same if SLU makes a similar run.
So the grandparents handle the STL daughter. My wife takes the girl to Kansas City and I head to Memphis. I was in the doghouse for weeks and I still get snide comments to this day, particularly from my daughter.
My response for the last 4 years remains a consistent one, "I made an extremely selfish decision that weekend. One that I am very comfortable with."

I was at the twilight of a 47 + year career with a large former fortune 500 company that had been downsizing for years. Had actually worked hard with my management to position myself to be “laid off”. The goal was to get a severance package while riding into the sunset of retirement.
“Axe” day was that Thursday, and the OSU game was at noon. I actually had to tell my boss to hurry it up, as I needed to get to the sports bar by noon! What a GREAT day!

I watched the OSU game with my middle son who was home for spring break. After the Syracuse game went to the Ghetto with the wife and two other kids. Enjoyed the show and was admonished by a cop while driving thru the ghetto streets flying a flag from our convertible.
Watched the Stanford game with my Father, UD alum and professor emeritus and my OSU grad uncleTom. Dad, who took me to my first game in the Fieldhouse was very happy. Stuart Scott grew up next-door to my uncle in Winston-Salem so I had a nice twitter convo with him sharing pics of Uncle Tom watching the game. Sad part was by Xmas, Dad, Uncle Tom and Stuart were all gone, all taken by cancer.
While watching the boys beat Stanford I resolved to go to Memphis for the elite 8 game. Headed down with a nephew, two kids and their friends. Besides the Flyer loss to Florida we had a great time. Met Devin Oliver's entire family at a gas station on the way home.

Memphis was an unbelievable weekend for any Flyer Faithful. Beale St became Lowes South. Wall to wall Dayton red, and the players and their families mingled with the crowd after they were dismissed for the night...in addition to the aforementioned Velvet, Keith W, Finn and others.

See the power of POSITIVE!
It's great to read all these stories. Sort of a shared experience even if we were separated by time (year you graduated) or space (in the Middle East, St Louie, or near Lowes) ...
Now the anniversary date 3/22/2014
7:10 pm, CBS 11 Seed Dayton vs. No. 14 & 3 Seeded Syracuse
Third round W 55–53 Record 25–10
Where: First Niagara Center (19,420) Buffalo, NY
TO me this game was a complete shocker on more than 1 level.
First I was in the Atlantic Ocean with limited connection (Sat, Cell, Radio, etc) to the outside world and was desperate to get any information on anything related to the game.
Secondly, I knew that because the first game was against OSU the motivation was set high as it was a chance for UD to be able to play against a regional rival (in a way) and earn respect in-state if we won. However, I didn't think we would have that same motivation against the Orange. Take that factor away and maybe that would account for less spirit in the effort. I just didn't know.
Now combined with not being able to know anything at all what was going on it drove me crazy!
I don't remember exactly how I found out. It may have been 2 days after that I gleaned the news. A simple report:
Dayton 55 Syracuse 53
You got to be sh .......ten ME!!
The questions remanded WHO? HOW? WHO do we play next????????
I had to read about it much later not as much fun as knowing real time though.
Keep the stories coming .... POSITIVE ONES of course!

My brother-in-law was getting married this weekend. We had a planned dinner that day with his new wife's family. I told my wife "we have to be done by 6:45 so we can get back to your family's house by 7 for the game."
We went to the steakhouse of the dinner at about 5. As time wore on, each drink, appetizer, and nitpick of an order had me screaming on the inside "SHUT UP OR YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE ME MISS THE GAME." On the outside, I just looked glassily out the window imagining us beating Syracuse for approx. 2 hours. I didn't want to be the focus of his wedding weekend... but at the same time, hurry it the eff along.
Dinner wrapped up just on time, we made it back as they were introducing the game on CBS. As Syracuse missed the final shot, I jumped in their living room and hit my head on their ceiling fan. I probably would've given them the deed to my house as a wedding present on Sunday (the wedding day) I was so happy. I don't remember much about that day except following the Stanford upset VERY CLOSELY and realizing we were meeting another double digit seed in the Sweet 16!

We were in Key West - watched in a great Sports Bar - - -
No surprise - there were several UD grads there also! (We are everywhere, it seems)
(and we are always wearing our UD gear!)
I still have the newspaper articles . . . and the photos of the UD crowd at the bar . . .
in Key West . . .

Wore my Flyers shirts in Key West a couple weeks ago and several people commented and asked what the future looked like. However, the one dude in the pink G string wearing Pink wings walking around town really freaked me out when he wanted to talk basketball. You should all be thankful I am not smart enough to post pictures here, because once you see it you just can not unsee it.

Rollo and man-kinis just don't do it. Kind of like the motivational picture posted for our liberal friends.

It's not so much that we're everywhere, as a school our size only has so many alums to spread out. It's that an extremely high percentage of our alumni are proud to display and talk about it. This is part of what makes UD so special.
Last year I was in Phoenix and was walking through their Botanical Garden with my family. Their botanical garden is basically a 50 acre desert with walking paths that display the different types of plant and wildlife in that area. Keep in mind that there were only like 200 people in the park.
Wife says to daughter - "Where's dad?"
Daughter answers - "He's back there talking to some stranger he met on the path who was wearing a Dayton hat."
I ran into an 80 year old couple at the grocery in Waterloo, IL a few weeks ago who were wearing Dayton gear. They went there in the 50's and we talked for like 30 minutes.

Quite a few of our family vacation photos have me wearing some UD gear for the reason you describe. When we look at old photos one of my daughters will always comment on Dad wearing his customary UD shirt.

Let me set the scene. Gallow’s Taproom on the corner of Bethel and Olentangy in the heart of enemy territory. This was the arranged spot for our Columbus alumni watch party. Roughly 40 of us crowded into a small part of the venue as the Ohio State fight song, dance music from some weird DJ they had there, and of course the game, played. Moving ahead to the final frame. Craft comes down, takes the shot, misses, that place was like a tale of two cities. One side of the bar, stunned silence. The other side, pure, unadulterated, jubilation! I never had such fun listening to 97.1 The Fan as I did after that game was over!
Moving ahead to what happened four years ago today, we were at Gresso’s just south of downtown Columbus when we beat Cuse. Probably one of the most fun Saturday nights I’ve ever had. Buy Maine memory of the Stanford game was being associated with the Kesha song Timber. We had a bar at full capacity 30 minutes before tip of that game. It was unreal.
