Frankie is 6-9 and explosive, LuHi coach John Buck said. He shoots the ball extremely well, and is only scratching the surface of his potential. I truly believe he will take major strides in the coming years as a player. Best of all, Frankie is one of the most genuine and humble kids I have ever had the pleasure to coach.
Said LuHi and NY Jayhawks coach Jay David: Hes a highly versatile forward who can defend multiple positions and rebound with the best around. He is an extremely high-level shooter and has a high ceiling.

Dayton has landed the pledge of Frankie Policelli. Talented forward from New York https://247sports.com/Player/Frankie-Policelli-45573219 …
Brad Cavallaro @BradCav2
Dayton adds a quality wing in Frankie Policelli. Now they need to add some bigs and they will have a really nice core. Should add some transfers to supplement rebuild
Kevin Sweeney@CBB_Central
Dayton lands the commitment of 2018 forward Frankie Policelli, per his Twitter page. Big-time get for Anthony Grant. High-upside kid with great size and athleticism who had Power 5 offers.
Young core starting to come into focus for Dayton with Crutcher, Cohill, & Policelli.

Big kudos to Grant and co. for landing Frankie. From all indications, he is a high level recruit who can help the program immediately.

I was hoping that Anthony Grant and his staff would get a commitment from Frankie. I believe he is really going to be a difference maker. I think we are one big away from being outstanding next season!

You could have some real fun with him as a small ball 5. He could get a lot of mismatches against teams with more traditional lineups

Absolutely...good insight OSU Flyer! A guy that size who can put the ball on the floor as well as shoot the three-ball creates nightmarish mismatches for an opponent. The comparison to Devin Oliver might be correct, though it appears he has a bigger body than Devin. And the positive thing...he is on the court in 2018, not a longer term find. We must all give the coaching staff a big kudos for scoring on a kid like this late in the recruiting for 2018!

He's by all accounts that I've read already an excellent 3pt shooter so he's already ahead of the game. In watching his videos it seems like he can do some stuff of the dribble too.
The thing I really like about him is that the high school he played for, Long Island Lutheran, is one of those basketball factory schools. He's got two other guys on his team that we've offered 19 PG Tyson Etienne (Rivals top 150 guy) & 20 PG Andre Curbelo. It seems like just about everyone on his high school team is a division prospect.
They played Moeller, Montverde Academy (high school national champions) and the top teams in the NYC area. He's still going to be a freshman but he's played with and against more top tier talent than your average freshman.

I am excited for him because he already seems like hes established from the perimeter. I would be lying though if I said I wasnt a little nervous. We need a guy his size to commit to playing on the block as well. Thats what was so frustrating with X this year as he always pick and popped to the 3 point line. If Grant can establish an aggressiveness in this kid to go to the rim first and think perimeter second then his potential has no limit.

If I'm reading it right, it appears he had a great junior season, blew out his knee, and the senior season was spent getting back (accounting for the low 12/6 stats)? Is that why the bigger schools backed off, they weren't sure he could regain the explosiveness?

He got a offers from Texas Tech, UC, Illinois and Maryland his senior year. He visited George Washington and Stony Brook in the fall.
He was a plan B guy for Texas Tech and Illinois who got commitments from top 100 guys at SF after they offered him. Maryland offered in March but I'm not sure how committable that offer was
I think the stats are a product of playing for a team with lots of other D1 talent

And this really goes to show you just how bunched up these players are in talent. Had TT and Illinois not gotten what could be described as their "preferred" guys ( ??) they would have still been quite happy with Frankie...

Finally!
After what seems like week upon week of visiting this forum to look for any news concerning additions to the team ........
Just glad to hear something about someone .....
However, this guy looks to be a pretty good get for late in the recruit cycle for this years crop (2018).
Again just glad to hear there is some players out there that seem interested on getting on board the plane!

Actually, he had offers from, Texas Tech, Maryland, Cincinnati among others so I wouldnt say the P5 schools backed off.

On Dayton recruit Frankie Policelli, @CoachJohnBuck, of @LuHiBasketball, says, "He’s explosive. He really shoots the ball well. He can get hot. He had games where he hit 6, 7 and 8 3s for us in different games. He rebounds the ball. He’s just a really, humble, selfless kid."

Had a good feeling about this kid, that he was going to choose us. Being I live near to LuHI, and the kind of kids they produce.
Sounds like he has a great attitude. I hope he can be a true stretch four to open up the court. Should be a good pickup!!
Welcome Frankie!

That last point is EXACTLY right. Lutheran HIGH has 3 to 4 go D1 and a few others D2 in most years. So while i'm not too concerned - i think he'll more ready, more ready than others by Game 5.
That said, It will take hime 15 to 25 games to really get familiar with the higher intensity and what's expected of him on defense.

Yes. I think the old saying applies to some degree. You gotta let the big dogs feed.
In many cases there is an abundance of talent at a position. AG knows his position in the pecking order with each recruit. When your competition has filled their ships, hopefully your due diligence can pay dividends. That's the reality of our position in the food chain.

This summer is going to be very important with the new guys that will be suiting up. If memory serve me correctly, last summer was pretty empty with several guys out. I believe that might have been a big part of our difficulties last year.

From what I've read and seen, I think AG thinks he has a chance at every kid he goes after regardless of who else is looking at him.

I think we are seeing the change in recruiting philosophies between Archie and Anthony. Archie went more for the heart and tough kids. I think we are seeing a difference in AG in that he is going after long and athletic shooters. I just have to wonder how long it will take before we see a more agressive pressing defense.

What's your point? Seems like a good get. Not "a program changer" or likely to have much impact for a year or two, but at least a seemingly respectable acquisition. Hard to get as excited as we were last year though with KA, Crosby, and Svboda going to lead us to the promised land!!!!!
What we need is immediate help!!! In the form of quality upperclassmen, grad transfers and or transfers that sit a year. Cunningham, our only high quality player has only 30 games left and the cupboard is still pretty bare- we still seem pathetic devensively, or are you predicting contending for the conference championship based on Frankie?

I would be disappointed if Anthony didn't think he could get everyone of his targets. Then there is reality. If the walls could talk we might be shocked at the swings and misses that every mid major experiences in recruiting. But that's the game he is in for the money he is making.

I agree there will be swings and misses but I think there are everywhere, even at the P5 level. I think he differs from Archie in that he is willing and thinks he has a chance at any kid he goes after if he thinks they fit his system regardless of who else is recruiting him.

Just talked to Frankie Policelli's dad, Frank. He's well-versed in Dayton hoops history and rattled off a bunch of famous Flyer names (Don May, Bucky Bockhorn, etc.) Also one of the most interesting things about Frankie is he's a triplet with a brother, Niko, and sister, Amber.
Ricardo Greer was the Dayton assistant coach in charge of recruiting Frankie Policelli, who said of Greer, "He just tells it how it is. He's pretty straightforward. He's funny. He tells you what's going to happen. This is what Dayton has to offer. There's no BS. I love that."

With an Italian name and the first name Frankie, it has to be something like Frankie Hot Hands imo. Of course, this is assuming that he can shoot well.

I recommend a 16 month vacation. We're not going to be a great team this year. Improved, with young guys taking bigger roles and a couple key pieces returning to the court, but not great. My highly preliminary prediction with the current roster is a winning record in the A10, but not contending to win it until next year.

One grad transfer that can play the 5 will change everything. We have experienced starters and good role players...Grant needs to find an anchor for the middle.

Off topic - go ahead and shoot me. NY'rs are funny. When it is cool (with people from out of the state), western and other upstate'rs like to be associated with NYC. When it is an in state discussion, they want nothing to do with it. NYC. Metro area NY'rs think of Rockland county, and anything north, as upstate and a different country for all they know.

I don't think we need a 5 to put us over the top. A 5 continues to leave us with 2 sophomore starting guards who will have a lot of scoring responsibility, plus counting on another freshman (Cohill) for outside scoring and as the only real attacking guard. Relying on freshmen usually isn't a winning formula and 2 sophomores + 1 freshmen getting a lot of the shots isn't my preference. Mikesell and Trey are very good supporting cast (that do well when they're not drawing the #1 defender) but not leading men, and unless we can get a 5 like Big Steve at this point in the process (we can't), it's going to be a big body who rebounds and plays defense. There are worse things in life since this would create a very balanced team, but "good" at every position just makes us "good." I have a different preference.
I would prefer a 6'5" - 6'7" scorer who can fill it up, draw the majority of the defensive attention, and can also play some defense. A guy like Cooke or Siebert who can take over a game and put up 20 while skying for a key rebound with his athleticism. Push Mikesell to first guy off the bench with Toppin giving Cunningham a rest (go small).
A guy like that is like adding a big bat in the middle of the lineup, everyone else starts to see better pitches because they are scared of facing him. Adding a 5 at the quality we'll get is like adding a light hitting shortstop with a great glove; sure it makes the team better but it's not a game changer.
If we can't get a guy with that kind of skills (they're admittedly not easy to find either), then sure, a 5 would help round us out.

Frankie signed, sealed and delivered.
"We're excited to announce the addition of Frankie Policelli to our program," Grant said. "Frankie will fit very well into the fabric of our campus and community. He is highly motivated to achieve success both as a student and an athlete. As a player, he possesses a great combination of size, skill, and athleticism that will fit nicely into our style of play on both ends of the floor."

Improved seems to be the right word. I could see us contending for an NIT bid next year, but a whole lot would have to go right for us to be a 20+ win NCAA team. I'd set my sights on somewhere in the 17-18 win range, and consistent improvement throughout the year. With the dissidents out of the program now, I think a little more harmony goes a long way too. Curious to see how minutes will be dished out. Off the cuff guess:
PG: Crutcher (32 min), Cohill (8 min)
SG: Davis (26 minutes), Cohill (10 min), Matos (4 min)
GF: Mikesell (20 min), Matos (12 min), Landers (8 min)
F: Landers (24 min), Toppin (8 min), Policelli (8 min)
F: Cunningham (30 minutes), Toppin (10 minutes)
Totals:
Crutcher - 32 min
Landers - 32 min
Cunningham - 30 min
Davis - 26 min
Mikesell - 20 min
Cohill - 18 min
Toppin 18 min
Matos - 16 min
Policelli - 8 min
If Frankie is going to get extended minutes next year, then he likely has to beat out Matos, Toppin or Mikesell for more PT. That top 6 is going to be tough to break. And of course, if we land a Juco or Grad Trans PG, that will have a ripple effect. That said, I feel pretty good about this 9 as long as one of Toppin or Frankie step up and provide some quality minutes at the 4.

I have a feeling there will be many nights when Crutcher logs 38-40 mpg again like this year.

Frankie will help some.
We had so many negative drags on our roster this season all you have to do is look at who left and who is coming in to conclude we will be much better. I don't know how many wins or what post-season is in store for us, but we will be better baring anymore injuries.
We had no bench. We had negative team chemistry. Our practice time was limited to sessions without key players. AG was installing his offensive and defensive philosophies.
We should expect 20 or more wins, especially if AG nails some beef which we can be assured is on his bucket list.

We should expect 20 wins and an NCAA berth 3 out of every 4 years. We didn't get it last year so we should expect it this year.

There were games like that, but he averaged 31.2 minutes per game. Darrell Davis averaged 35.1 mpg last year and he was clearly wearing down in the second half of the season.

Exacty. If Toppin and Policelli can forget that they are freshmen, gel, and play "stupid good", this will be a fun season. Crutcher and Landers should be prepared to log a lot of minutes - after seeing Cohill in person, I don't see him contributing this year.

I'm really hoping we can get a PG for next year that can take 10 minutes a game without the wheels falling off the offense. It would help keep Crutcher fresh. A grad transfer would make a lot of sense, assuming there is a grad transfer looking for 10 minutes at a good program - that guy may not be out there.
Even better would be a quality grad transfer that can split time 50/50 with Crutcher.

I doubt Grant wants a 50/50 split with Crutcher. He likes Crutcher a lot and wants him on the floor a lot.

HOTWASH ... even if I have quotes ... it doesn't mean he said it ... I summarized ... I tried to get the feeling about what he was saying and NOT exact words ... FYI I don't know anything about his history or some of the names used that may be completely wrong. This is what I heard ... I don't promise accuracy. Some of the questions were leading and he had to say something to respond to the interviewer. The topics selected, to be talked about, were wholly out of his hands.
Frankie Policelli .. POLE-LA-CHELLI
The one that got away
2018 incoming real freshman
- AAU Jay
- Upstate NY guy ... in NYC last year
- Comfortable at UD
- He says ... "Do your homework picking the college, ask questions, find the facts"
- "find the facts with transfers"
- "When Mike Hopkins? was at Syracuse .. everyone knows each other ... if he stayed he may have gotten an offer from Syracuse"
- In the gym exclusively in the weight room ... 6 months ... busy doing work"
- Dayton is slow, not like NYC, calm ... like upstate NY ... looks like home ... trees
- Dayton feels like home
- Parents loved the campus, very happy, lot of UD games close to them, televised most of the games if they don't attend
- Looking forward to the first road game and first home game.. our fans are crazy
- First moment on the UD court .. "I looked up into the empty stands ... the coaches say it gets filled up ... it gets loud here"
- Announcer said "I was at play in game at UD ... UD one of the most fun arenas to watch basketball" talking to Frankie
- The current UD team in town... 'the whole team can play all positions ... the whole team can do everything"
- Dwayne? is my roommate
- Obi from Oswig? NY ... we are the only 2 from NY ... Dayton has flat and greasy pizza
- "Anthony Grant is a calm guy ... when he talks people listen, great NBA background . cool to have that type a guy around you"
- "this year could be the turnaround year ... last year was AG first year and could of been chaotic"
- Assistant coaches " I love them, they all have different expertise"
- Chip on your shoulder from no offer from Syracuse? "I take it in stride, no chip on my shoulder, I couldn't image anything else right now"
- Dayton is? "Fun .. solid coaches ... UD fans are taking pictures ... people in Dayton say hi ... people are friendly in Dayton"
- How will you be used? "They put me in different positions ... I may be small forward or big? Forward .. rotate positions"
Rapid Fire Questions
- A Movie with you in it would be called? "Fantastic Frankie"
- "I would want Will Smith to play me"
- Fav comedian .. Will Farrell
- If he had a Crush it would be ... Salena Crush
- Wants to hang out with ... Will Farrell
- His 3 Bucket list items ... Italy, skydiving in the tube, live in a beach house for a year on a private island
- Reality Show? Likes Ball Brothers
- LaBron? Should go to the Lakers
- If in Italy ... and only had 1 meal it would be ... "chicken parm" ... or chicken parm sandwich
- Frankie's mission statement is ... "I'm a caring person, I try to do the right thing, try to be happy, I have pretty good manners.
- His advice to others about opinions, social media .... "don't pay attention to others, pay attention to those close to you."
- His Grandma is "96 years old ... Faye"
- 5 Words about himself ... Funny, caring, respectful, outgoing, loving

Frankie can come to my house and have dinner anytime. I make a mean chicken parm or turkey parm. If he eats like a lumberjack like i do; hell gain lots of weight. Look what its done for me? I dont have any problems keeping my weight up? I dont have any problems keeping my weight above 200 pounds. Since he weighs under 200 pounds; he needs to eat at my house and forego that nasty healthy food that the strength and conditioning trainer is trying to pawn off and get him to eat.

I took his comment about a "chip" as a positive. My read was that the interviewer was hinting that he should have a chip because he wasn't offered by Syracuse. Frankie said, and I paraphrase, he didn't have a chip on his shoulder because he couldn't be happier about how everything played out and he is very happy being at Dayton.

Kendall, Kyle and Scoochie all had chips on their shoulders because bigger schools did not offer them scholarships.

I see on the Dayton Flyers home page that the web team has updated the roster with pictures of the team. That is great. Last year, i complained on this blog that the web team was very tardy in updating the web pages. But, alas the truth is coming out. Frankie Policelli is being listed at 67 not 68 as i have been seeing bloggers report. Usually, heights are exaggerated. Rarely are guys listed shorter than their real size. Obi Toppin us still listed at 68 in spite of blogger comments that he is taller. Cunningham is still listed at 67 but when i see him in person, he looks a little bit more like 66 to me.
I remember Jim Paxson was always listed at 65 on Dayton rosters but when i saw him in person, i always thought he was around 64. Then surprisingly, when he got to the NBA, he was listed at 66.
But, you cant measure the amount of the fight in the dog by pure measurements. Still, you got to temper your expectations when you put someone in a position where they are undersized. This is why there are weight classes in both wrestling a boxing.
The only guy that i remember being reported on the Dayton roster as shorter than reality was Steve Lawrence who was originally listed at 69 then later at 610. But, when i saw him in person, he had to be 700 tall. He was really tall.

I saw Obi at Milano's a month or two ago and he is definitely more like 6'9 or so it appears. My Dad is 6'8 and Obi seems at least an inch or two taller.

Do they measure with or without shoes? There's easily an inch.
Also a footnote on Frankie. Mikesell in an interview said Frankie is really skinny but the weights will help that, but also he can really shoot no matter what his size is.

Pretty sure Dayton measures with shoes. Chris Wright was listed at 6-8 here but was measured 6-7 1/2 in the NBA without shoes. Still, the NBA listed him at 6-8. Since they play in shoes (good for anywhere from half an inch to an inch) it makes sense to me to measure players that way.
There isnt as much height-hyping as people seem to believe. Its actually more prevalent with short guards (not bigs) that come up short of six-feet.
Jerry Matos was listed at 6-7 in junior college but is on Daytons roster at 6-6. Frankie Policelli is now listed at 6-7, not 6-8. That tells me Anthony Grant doesnt inflate the numbers.

I saw Obi in practice last year. He is taller than Josh and has long arms. He was thin, but had some nice moves and seemed quick. I am eager to see what a year of development did for him. I wonder if he is a sleeper.
Most players look better in practice and the Red Blue game, but I think he could be pretty good. He will definitely add height to the lineup.
