I think Intensity is what has gotten them in this foul trouble. I don't know what game you are watching, but UD is getting screwed. And you can check my posts, I never blame officials for losing but this is insane.

Umm they are actually playing good D. All I'm asking for is give the same fouls to Richmond that you are calling on UD. Right now it's grossly one sided.

When Devin gets frustrated, he throws up garbage from 25 feet out of the flow of the offense. EVERY TIME.

Sibert passes the ball to a guy 4 feet under the basket ... and out of bounds. The upper classmen on this team make a lot of dumb plays.

Missed opportunity in a very winnable game.
If we can't win these, we don't belong at the top of the league or in the NCAA.

I may occasionally complain about a bad call or two, but the refs controlled this game and handed it to Richmond. What a pathetic waste of time to have to watch that. That was the worst officiated game I have seen in several years.

Detroit Flyer isn't really a Flyer fan. Why in the world would you taunt fellow Flyer fans after a loss? Oh that's right, you're a sad, sad little man.
We should have won. We made some dumb plays. They got a very favorable whistle. We didn't do a good job rebounding. Oliver was bad bad bad in this game.
If you don't think missing two big men has anything to do with the rebounding, I don't know what to tell you. If you want to make fun of Flyer fans for lamenting the loss and venting, you ought to go to another board.

Agree 88. I officiate HS ball in VA and I would be embarrassed if my crew called that **** poor of a game. They certainly controlled the game, which should NEVER happen.

The frosh and sophs -- namely Pierre, Price, Pollard, and Davis -- kept us in the this one. They played well enough to win, but didn't get any help from the upperclassmen...

Didn't see it. Could only hear it. Can sum it up in stats:
UD shoots 51% from the field (including 27% on 3's) & 83% from the line.
UR shoots 37% from the field (including 21% on 3's) & 91% from the line.
Who would you have thought won the game?
More stats:
UD shoots 15-18 from the line.
UR shoots 35-35 from the line.
NOW who would you have thought won the game?
Sounds like a homer job to me in re FT attempts.
Not sayin'...just sayin'...

No doubt the officials decided the game. One can argue whether the fouls were legit but what cannot be argued is that the whistles determined the winner.

Thanks DF you have finally shown your true colors. You are no fan...period. Never seen a fan gloat in his so called teams losses.
Funny thing is reading other msg boards by Dayton haters like X and even they are making statements like "...even though I hate Dayton they are really getting hosed.."

The incessant whistles made it so we could not maintain any momentum or get into any kind of rhythm or flow.

Richmond: FTM-A
Freethrows:32-35
and that including a ridiculous technical foul on AM; you really think this wasn't a homer job?

Archie seemed to point towards our lack of defensive rebounding as our worst offense in this game.

I think so too. Unfortunately though, they don't award any brownie points for moral victories...

the thing is as a coach you pretty well know youngsters are going to be inconsistent, but the upperclassmen are every bit as inconsistent as the freshmen.

Flyers need 9 wins to bubble... unless we make the A-10 finals.
Thoughts?

I was going to wait until UD had 4 conference games under their belt to make some comments. I can't wait any longer. After 4 games I expected UD to have a worst a 3-1 record in conference. At 1-2, that isn't possible so here goes.
1. What is UD focusing on in practice for them to think they need to shy away from contact when they drive to the basket? Much of these games I have seen UD players jump away from defenders while driving and put up an off balance shot, at best. You can't get to the FT line without contact AND your shot has a higher chance of being blocked without any foul called. UD should be going up STRONG while looking for contact. The refs today especially were ready to blow it with contact.
2. You can win and lose games at the FT line. Richmond won this game at the FT line today.
3. Where is the "killer instinct" with this team? UD had opportunities to knock out all three of these teams but didn't seem to show the urgency. This is something shown for the entire season and their most recent seasons as well. When you get a lead of 8+ points this team needs to put it into overdrive and run the opponents off the court. All season long they get that type of lead and let off the gas giving their opponents chances to "steal one" from them.
4. Can UD find ONE go to player please? When it is a "go to" player by committee how do they decide who it will be? It is great to have 8 / 9 players with considerable contributions but there needs to be ONE player that should have the ball when UD needs points. When you have ONE player their practices will focus on that ONE player during that critical time. More plays practiced with ONE player will create muscle memory and the players won't have to think "Who do I need to get the ball to today?" and just react for that ONE player.
I am sure there are many more rants / comments I could make but I don't have the energy. This UD basketball team, so far, is showing me that they will play close to how they have played in conference over the last decade and fade into the background. It looks like it will be Groundhog day all over again. Groundhog day all over again.

I thought most of the fouls were legitimate. You can't hack guys and put both hands on the dribble drive. We have fouled too much all season. Not like today was the exception to the norm. In some respects we were fortunate we didn't get called for more fouls than were whistled. Only difference is UR was lights out at the line.

Richmond got the benefit of at least 2 flops as well. The one in first half where Scott passed and early in the 2nd against Oliver where the replay showed he did not drop his shoulder at all. Then they call the foul on the Pollard layup where the guy flopped on no contact and it cost the Flyers a basket.

This has been a problem for the Flyers for years, it seems. On a positive note, it looks like young guys like Pollard and Davis might have that killer instinct mentality that has been so lacking at UD for years...

the last foul call on Scott he moved his feet, kept his hands up and got called simply because Anthony initiated the contact. The only other thing he could have done is get out of the way and given an uncontested layup

Richmond got the home whistle, but I expect that in every away game. We do foul too much as a rule for the last few years, IMO. I don't think we are as good as we thought right now. AM has brought the offense. He has not brought the defense so far in his tenure, although I do see some improvement there recently. AM has not brought a really good big man yet, and I think that hurts us a lot. Having Gavs and Kavs out for the last 3 games has intensified that weakness.

some of the fouls for arm bar and hand check were legit. But for the most part they were calling a foul on any contact with a driver. They were looking to call the fouls and the Flyers got the short end of that. The defense was not bad and since early in the season the games have not been called like that.

Although I agree with Archie that even with the fouls the inability to rebound their misses cost the Flyers the game. If they had rebounded they could have overcame the lack of foul shooting.

I would have to say then that just as many fouls should have been called on Richmond. I would sum the game up with the late possession when they took a 3 and one of their players crashed over the top of 2 Flyers knocking them to the ground with no call and possession back to the Spiders for a score. I would say there were 4 or 5 such possessions each being a 4 point swing. The Flyers were clearly the better team today, but alas, not on the scoreboard. Ultimately the best teams overcome, and Dayton did not today. If I were Archie, I would have been ejected with 2 Ts.

one thing is that each game we see that the best big on the floor plays for the opponent. Has been true in most games this year. Ododa(a soph) and IMO even Terry Allen are better than the Flyer bigs. It is a major handicap. Our bigs don't rebound much. They are OK at best and that is not easy to overcome.

I see bigs that are better than ours all over the league and in lower leagues. We are soft in the middle with the exception of Scott, who is hack-happy. Kavs and Gavs out makes us even softer in there.

Roomes was easily the best big on the floor when the Flyers won at Fordham

the referees aren't this bad every game. It is a disturbing trend that we cannot defend without fouling. Its been the same since Archie has gotten here. We absolutely have to get it fixed. all we ever do on defense is continue to bail teams out and let them shoot free throws. It's absolutely unacceptable.

Lets see what the numbers actually tell us and not our emotional compass:
UD has shot more FTs than the opponent in 12 of 18 games, but have shot fewer FTs in all five true road games (Ga Tech, Illinois State, Ole Miss, Fordham, Richmond = 111 vs. 162).
In home games, Dayton has out-shot all 10 opponents at the FT line (257 vs. 172).
Overall we have attempted 433 FTs to our opponents' 398.
Refs dont have anything to do with it. When we foul, its because we're hacking when we shouldnt be hacking and hand-checking when we shouldnt be hand-checking and sticking a leg out when we shouldnt be sticking a leg out.
You get more calls at home than you get on the road. In other news, water is wet.

Grumpy UD fans sure do like to name call when you do not fall in line with minimizing their grumpiness. Frankly, it would be far easier if I were not a fan and a “troll” as several posters here chose to call me. I can assure you that I did not suffer through that debacle at Richmond because I am a masochist. I actually believed that maybe, just maybe, we would break our 10 year drought there. Why, I’m not certain, but before the tip-off there is always hope. As a fan, I was pushed over the edge reading comments blaming the officiating for the Flyers loss. Chris and others have pointed out that the reason the officials called so many fouls on the Flyers is because we deserved them. We did not play any defense at all. Every time, we were out of position causing us to reach and maybe making contact. It was almost comical in that the Richmond players were not even trying to score most of the time. They just got a step on the flat footed Flyers and waited for the foul call. If you do not think every team in the A10 has closely watched the Saint Louis and Richmond films, and very easily determined where our weakness is, (no defense), then you are in a for a very long season. Yes, we can beat the likes of Fordham, but any team playing .500 or above, with some athletes and energy and focus is going to be tough for the Flyers to defeat unless we wake up. I have been calling it dazed and confused, a thought that has apparently gone over the heads of most here…. From my viewpoint, I also do not think the Flyers came close to matching the intensity of Saint Louis or Richmond. I give Richmond and their coaches a great deal of credit as they did something that the Flyers and AM have not done yet this season. They had a game plan to exploit our weakness, they executed the plan, and they played with intensity and focus, (as clearly demonstrated by their free throw percentage), in order to defend their home court against a team with superior talent. It really is not asking too much for our Flyers to play both offense and defense at a high level with passion and intensity. We either get out or the dazed and confused state or getting to .500 in the A10 is going to be extremely difficult….
