VCU Game Thread
We are back in a Tie for 1st... Can this be AT SLU 2014 Version 2.0... A late season big time road win, I believe... Let's go steal one at the Siegel Center, because I know it will be rocking on Saturday Afternoon.
Game is at 2 PM on Saturday and will be shown on ESPN2.
Starting Lineup:
G 1 JeQuan Lewis 6'1" 175 SO Dickson, TN
G 32 Melvin Johnson 6'3" 195 JR Bronx, NY
G 20 Jordan Burgess 6'5" 215 RS SO Midlothian, VA
G 21 Treveon Graham 6'6" 220 SR Temple Hills, MD
F 12 Mo-Alie Cox 6'6" 255 RS SO Alexandria, VA
Dyshawn Pierre v. Treveon Graham will be fun to watch!
Let's get it done! Go UD!

Cox looked a helluva lot taller than 6'6" last night when he was patrolling the paint.

It will be interesting to see how UD attacks "HAVOC". Any of there 6 scholarship players can take an outlet pass at half court and take it to the bucket, and really, only DDavis lacks the strength to finish at the rim despite contact. Getting the ball advanced the first 35% of the court and avoiding offensive fouls when attacking the rim will be big.

Richmond used a strategy to beat the press by having their bigs bring the ball up the court. I think that is something the Flyers could employ. Have Pollard or Pierre bring it up rather than have Scoochie swarmed by the press.

I think we are the most well equipped team in the A10 to handle their press given that we have 5 ball handlers. After last year's debacle at the Arena I expect we will be prepared and this will be a low scoring defensive game.

Archie is worried about defense...
"Honestly, the only thing we’re really watching right now is our defense,” Miller said. “I’m nervous. I’m scared right now. Our defensive numbers have not been very good lately — the last three games in general. You need that pop when you’re a small team on defense."

Watching this game reminds me of UD-Xavier games from a while ago when Xavier played pressure defense: if the referees allow a lot of hands work from VCU it's going to be a long day.

Kyle who never misses a layup, even missed one. We have taken five very bad shots. They are overplaying us on defense. We need some good picks, and back doors.
Terrible defensive confusion by Pierre on that last layup he allowed.

That was pretty rough: catching VCU with their heads turned but not finishing. But, not only not finishing, but missing so badly. Yikes.

Another bad call -- K Davis is in good defensive position with both arms straight up and offense creates contact.

Sibert is playing like he knows he is the best player on the court. Because he is.

Holy Cow - 2 missed FT's by VCU and we throw up another air ball. D.Davis will be on the court a lot today. Put it together at half time

Agree 100% Unfortunately this gets called all the time today in College Basketball. Not sure what you are supposed to do when you are straight up and the offensive player jumps right into you.

Unfortunately, through nearly 20 minutes he definitely looks like a freshman: missed layup, two airballs on threes, passing up a wide-open three, looking nervous on the dribble. Hopefully he can get settled during halftime; he's going to have to log some minutes with Kyle Davis's foul trouble.

Overall, a pretty good half of basketball after the slow start. In particular we are protecting the basketball amazingly well given VCU's pressure.

Only 4 turnovers. We are outshooting them 44% to 34%, but only 4-14 on threes. Outrebounded 21-17

It's not just DD having trouble dribbling so is Scoochie. The balls that VCU bought from the Patriots might have something to do with it

Scooch, KD and Pollard were much further along this time last year as a frosh than where DD currently is at. He really needs to start figuring it out quickly to help this team.

Archie grabs D Davis headed to lockerroom and puts his arm around him! Love it, assume he said keep shooting and play with confidence.

Baby D setting them up for the 2nd half. They will leave him alone for a few 3s and we extend the lead when he pops them.
Actually you can see he's putting too much air under the ball, he's shooting them like JS does and that's not his path of flight.

Love the 1H. UD played great. Only 4 turnovers, are you kidding me!!!! Fantastic defensive effort.
Keep turnovers low, keep up defensive intensity, and start hitting 3s in 2H = UD wins!

Archie patting DD's back the whole way down the tunnel just talking and encouraging. Similar to Sibert's pre-game remarks about Archie is more relaxed and teaching instead of yelling.

It is all about confidence. Baby D cares too much and thinks too much. He needs to get a shooter's mentality and just let it fly, again and again...

Thank you for that information. It felt like a lot, but I didn't realize it was basically all of them. It's why people who merely point at the foul count often miss the point; context matters.

Stay calm and run the offense. Trying to force drives and shots just leads to easy VCU rebounds. Not enough motion in the offense in the second half so far.
