Antetokounmpo: Longest Flyer Name Ever?
from the "offseason / slow news day" files ...
At 13 letters, is Kostas' last name the longest (unhyphenated) in Flyer history? He's only one letter longer than current walk-on Michael Schwieterman. I scanned the media guide, and longest I found was 12. even if you give lashawn pettus-brown the hyphen, he's only 12.
Derenbecker 11
dahlinghaus 11
Harrington 10
Inderrieden 11
Roggenburk 10
sacksteder 10
Schellenberg 12
Stapenhorst 11
zestermann 10
Westendorf 10
Watercutter 11
wannemacher 11
Topmoeller 10
waleskowski 11
Also, back of his jersey could be a tight squeeze. His brother manages. May have to arch and reorient, a la Dave Concepcion (horrible replica at link).

According to Elias, Antetokounmpo has the longest last name in UD history. One more letter than Don Claudepierre and Larry Schellenberg.

At what point does the weight of the letters start having a negative effect on their play?

As long as the guy can steer clear of Ds and Fs, he should be okay.

He's been playing with the Greek national team and wasn't enrolled in school this summer so he could not go on the trip to Spain. He is supposed to enroll for the fall semester which starts next week. No official word if he made it thru the NCAA Clearinghouse.

I will be very happy when he is verified as enrolled and then again when he passes the NCAA Clearinghouse. For some reason I am nervous that both of these things are not certain.

Thanks. I think he can really impact is this year. I agree, I'm a little concerned there will be something that could impact his eligibility. Students moved in this weekend and we haven't seen anything on him.

Classes do not start until later this week, he does not have to be on campus until then. Even if there were issues with eligibility, he would still be able to take classes, just like Big Steve.

The staff will take care of the D's and F's, it's the D/U/I issues that could create the biggest issues (nothing to do with Antetokounmpo specifically, just a general statement about all college athletes)

School starts tomorrow. Any Kostas sightings on campus or confirmation he is registered for classes? I will be relieved when there is evidence he is a Flyer.

The newest Dayton Flyer has enrolled at UD: Kostas Antetokounmpo part of two-man freshman class with Trey Landers.

Absolute speculation and experience from seeing overseas players at other schools trying to get cleared. It seems to take some time. We'll see!

I know that is true of foreign players, but he has played high school ball in the US for a couple years. Should have any issues been cleared up by now since he played in the US?

Given the academic cluster at UNC, it is hard for me to have any confidence in the NCAA when it comes to academics. Bunch of two-faced blowhards.

Being added to the official roster on UD's Web site does not mean he made it through the Clearinghouse, just that he is enrolled at UD and in class.
Check out the 2014-2015 roster (and team picture) and you will see that our last non qualifier was still listed on the web site.

If his brother is 6'11", then he looks 6'10". His skinny build is not that far off of his brother's, who plays with the big kids.

Big brother is listed at 6'11" and 222 lbs. by the Milwaukee Bucks. Easy to see Junior could hit that in his first off-season----or more.

This is the first time that I out- weigh one of the BIG men on the varsity basketball team. LOL, Ha Ha. One or both of us need to adjust their weight. Ugh! Maybe, it's both of us. Kostas needs to gain weight and I need to, um, shift my weight into muscle, um sorta! Just kidding!

This is true, but I will add what I also put in the other thread there is about Kostas:
If you check out Jablonski's twitter feed a few people have asked him about Kostas' eligibility. He has responded to people that he asked Archie about that when he first signed and Archie said there were no issues with that.

Now that we have gotten that sticky issue settled, let's go back to longest last name ever.
I think it belonged to JS as in Jordan SibertwhotransferedfromOhioState!
BUT! I may be wrong!

Last Sunday, I was at lunch with a current NBA player who is a friend of mine. I told him that US signed the younger brother of the Greek player for the Milwaukee Bucks. He rattled the last name off perfectly and said he was a really good player. I dropped my jaw and he laughed. I tried several times to say his name
and stumbled.
Later that day at the UD picnic, I asked the coaches how to pronounce his name. I was told "Kostas" with a long O. OK....

Larry and bucky should keep a piece of paper handy with only that on it until they get comfortable pronouncing it. That will probably only be 6-10 games depending upon how much playing time he gets, lol
It shouldn't take long to master KOSTAS
