Kostas A report on his progress
From today's DDN
http://www.daytondailynews.com/sport...qt9RgyfIveMNM/
Enjoy the comments by his team mates.
It mentions he couldn't travel with the team to Indy. I remember Steve sitting and cheering with the students in Columbus because he couldn't be on the bench.

“He’s a 6-10, 6-11 guard,” Landers said.
|
This is also what I have been hearing from people as well as far as where he has been practicing and projects to play next year. If he is half as good as his brother, we will have ourselves a stud.

Odd questions here, but does he speak English? Greek? Is his family actually from Greece or are they a military family. What's the back story?

It will be interesting to see how he and Sam Miller play together. He may hide some of SM's weaknesses and allow Sam more space to shoot from the outside if Sam's defender has to cheat in to cover Kostas.

He and his family are from Greece. He moved to the US after his brother was drafted by the Bucks.

As I was reading the article I just kept thinking that surely Archie is not going to walk away from the opportunity to coach a player like Kostas and help him step out of his brother's shadow.

I'd say not just with Sam, but with everybody. Kostas' height/length/athleticism could certainly clean up defensive mistakes.

That's common across the country. Many foreign students cannot speak English or speak very little.

No, I am saying it is common for foreign students at every university to not speak English or speak it very well. I know when I was at UD 10 years ago, many of the foreign students did not speak English well at all if they spoke it. It has been the same at every school I have been at since. I do not know why this is insulting? We live in a country where you press 2 for English when we call customer service for many businesses.

Most of them go to tutors or the writing center for help with those sort of things if there is a language barrier.

a 6' 11" guard?
A rumor has it that his wing span is good enough to dribble with one hand out near the Free Throw line while dunking another BB in the hoop ....
But I'd say that's only a rumor.

Maybe for a college incoming student. (Although I would believe that he is better than that being from Europe and spending time here. Most European people learn a little English.)
The insulting part is the number of US BORN students graduating from our own schools (especially inner city) that can't speak or write very good!!

This is true. The reason is that they don't want to be embarrassed.
When learning a new language, most can read, and understand the spoken new language, before they can speak it and have it understood by the listener. I know from experience! lol

I think this tweet from the UD Managers is pretty good proof Kostas is staying at UD. It's also pretty nice that Giannis showed up in Dayton to work out with his little brother. I think he might be able to teach the team a few things and maybe recruit a point guard.

Wow, after watching that I am questioning if he can even help the basketball team, with his lack of athletic ability on that swing. He makes Charles Barkleys golf swing look like Tiger Woods.

It's crazy how so many athletic people can't play golf. My dad started me playing when I was 4 or 5. I know everyone can't be Jack Nicklaus(I would have said Tiger Woods 10 years ago), but it's really not that difficult to hit a ball that is not moving. I'm not saying everyone can break 80 but breaking 100 has to be the easiest thing ever.

Tougher than a lot of folks think. Hitting it on the practice range is child's play. Be sure to count how many finesse shots it takes to get it in the jar. Kostas surely has experienced the frustration of that part of the game.
Can't wait to see him on the court where he will excel.

The average male golfer in America can't break 100! Golf is an easy game to play but the hardest to play well. Take that from someone who has given over 500 lessons and has played for prize money.

Quit hitting drivers at the range and work on your game from 100 yds in. Working on shorts game and putting 3 to 4 times more than anything else will take strokes off faster than anything. And don't tell me your a good putter if you average over 30 putts in a round.

Interesting observation in my family. I have 3 brothers that were all great athletes. One played football at the highest level. I'm the only sister. I play golf, softball and tennis recreationally. And I play those better than all 3 brothers who are all way better athletes than me by a mile. They all played football and basketball very well but I can beat them at golf playing from the men's tees.
We finally figured it out. They struggle playing sports that have an appendage. A golf club. A tennis racket. A bat. If they can't physically handle the ball, they struggle. It's very odd, but it's true for my families small sample. We think it's because they had a basketball or football in their hands since age 2 or 3. I didn't start playing basketball until about 5th or 6th grade and grow up playing games with ball until much later in childhood. It's an interesting theory, but my brothers all believe it.

Playing high single digit golf is all about consistency--avoiding double bogeys+.
Playing low single digit golf is all about birdies. Very very few amateurs play at that level making only pars.
I can't imagine fitting Kostas with clubs. wow.

The average male not breaking 100 is pretty much true when all rules are observed. And that is for people who play with some regularity. At the peak poularity of golf I think the stat was half of all males NEVER broke 100.
And the advice on short game is dead on. Played my best when all practice time was on the putting green, in practice traps and chipping area and hitting 120 yard and shorter shots on the range. Took driver out of the bag, added a wedge and hit 3 woods off tees. And playing smarter when 260 out on a par 5. Lot easier to hit a full wedge when you have a full time real job than figure out how to finesse a 30 yard shot.

That's pretty true, I'm a ~6 dad is a ~1, difference is he makes birdies and I don't. I probably average 1 birdie per 18 and those are usually 2 putts from hitting a par 5 in two.
I regularly hit 13-14 greens and will shoot 78. My putting is horrible.

If you hit that many GIR (13-14) your chipping and putting has to be below par. A tour pro might average 13-14 greens but they get it up and in 85% or so of the time. Like I said before track your putting....if you average of 30 putts...work on chipping, pitching and putting 80% of your time.
One of the head pros I worked for couldn't hit 14 greens in a good round but he chipped and putted so well if he did hit 14 greens it was 66-68 all day

My uncle is in the Dayton golf HOF. When I played in school he pushed me to break the game down into smaller goals that went like this:
In 9 holes shoot for 5 GIR. Birdie one of those holes. Of the 4 you miss, get up and down on two of them. That leaves you one over for 9 holes and takes the pressure off of thinking you need to par every hole and/or hit every green. Rinse and repeat. Depending on what par is you are scoring between 72/74. That also equates to 30 putts/round, which on a course like the South course or equivalent TPC is pretty good putting with no tolerance for 3 putting.
As far as practice, 60/90 minutes every evening on the NCR practice putting green which is huge and can simulate the tough long putts on the course.
We could move this discussion to OTJ.

Back to Kostas. He might have a lot of tools. The workout photo shows that he needs to add a lot of muscle to be an effective D1 player and beyond...

He somehow developed a mental block. I saw him in a pro am years and years ago, before the show. He wasn't great, but was decent. Probably a 10 to 12 handicap. Someone told me once he hit someone in a pro am or some celebrity event and just can't get himself to swing. No idea if that's true.

One of the head pros I worked for couldn't hit 14 greens in a good round but he chipped and putted so well if he did hit 14 greens it was 66-68 all day

Tour pro's hit 13-14 greens at championship distances. Obviously i'm playing regular courses, which are not exceptionally hard. I drive the ball pretty long, so on most courses save from their toughest holes, I have less than 130 in; often times 30-100 yards.
My chipping is pretty solid, its my putting thats brutal. The only birdies I make are inside 3 feet usually. I'm capable of 3 putting from anywhere, I struggle with 3-5 foot putts all the time. Friends laugh at me because i've conceded trying to make birdies and anything outside of 10 feet I just lag up there so I don't three putt.
I'll never forget I had a high school golf match a long long time ago... we played 9 hole matches. I hit all 9 GIR, shot 38 on a par 35. It was a pretty special day.

Golf is so fickle
The curse of the double digit handicapper is that his golf is like pushing on a tub of balloons. When you finally fix the yips in your putting (that's really what it is), the woods (metals), irons, or wedges go south and you morph back to that 12 you are comfortable with. Really an addictive head game from start to finish.
Kostas actually didn't have that bad of a swing. Can't imagine the arc he must have.

So, here's my question, how do you create that cool caricature/ avatar?? Does UD do that for its players or is there "an app for that"?

There are a lot of people/accounts on instagram/online that will make them. The account @thatcoolsign on instagram made the Kostas one. It looks like they will make them for people for $5. https://www.fiverr.com/jtwa11/draw-y...term=&view=gig
Here is his instagram account with other ones.

If his floor is Perry Jones III, I would take that in a second. He was a good player at Baylor.

Here is their 2019 Mock from the same site - they have Kostas at 7. They've had him up there a while.

So their projection has him only playing at UD for two years. And their assessment indicates that for at least the first of the two year he will be just learning how to play the game and trying to put on some weight.

Curious... does anyone know how accurate the site has been historically. Not as far as exact pick obviously but are most in the ballpark?

At this point, I doubt it matters. I've seen his name floated in a couple of different places, but I get the impression his stock is rising as his brother's stock is rising on the hope that he can be some semblance of Giannis. His play on the court next season will dictate his potential draft status as there is very little for any of these people to go off. What caught my eye was Svoboda showing up on the 2020 mock draft at the 15 spot. If UD places 2 players in or near the Draft Lottery in back to back seasons, that will certainly be heady times.

Not real accurate. Much like HS recruit rankings actually. Compare the top 20 kids in any HS class with those who actually become the 20 best college basketball players, and you'll see there's maybe a handful that are as good as advertised. Predicting anything two years out, let alone the trajectory of an 18 year old is pretty darn hard. Fun to think about it, but don't put much, if any, stock in it.

I had no idea Svoboda was anywhere near that highly touted. I know stars are far from the perfect metric, but he's a two star and his scouting report says he is only an average athlete. Kind of hard to imagine him as a first round pick, so I am clearly missing something

What do you expect? It's not like some jock sniffing wanna be reporter who laps up the whiffs of the AAU athletes every weekend has any clue what a player in Europe has to offer. I think Svvoda will be the real deal by what he accomplished at the U20 European championships.

You know that golf uses a different size ball?
Is Bermuda grass really from Bermuda?
Does Crabgrass in the fairway affect my game?
Why do they call that little piece of wood a "T", it doesn't look like one.
If you hit a ball into the trees can you still see the ball thru the trees.
Birdies, Bogies, Eagles?
The list can go on and on and on.
Where is Andy Rooney when you need him? (60 Minutes)
Topic (Kostas) sure didn't learn anything more from this thread.

2 stars often just mean there were not scouted, which in this case doesn't surprise considering he's a 20 year old euro.

Here's my answer to that. I'd rather have a bad putting day than a bad driving day. I've never had an OB penalty on a putt and I can't remember ever putting into the water. I have putted into a bunker more than once though. I even think I've putted into a bunker more than once on the same hole.
As bad as my golf game has been all my life, I do have a 186 yard ace back in 2006 to make it all seem worth it.

Worst part is if it was 45 foot sharp right to left putt, you have to bury the story or just tell about the putt. When questioned of score you penciled in for that hole, you have to feign Alzheimer's.

Come on Brob you can't make 2 separate Ray Harper joke posts in a row or the "stay on topic this board is for serious basketball discussions only at all times police" are going to get angry.
And shoutout to SDF for making a Ray Harper joke. Welcome to the darkside!

I once scored a 17 on an 18 hole course. Didn't record any more shots after I headed back to the clubhouse for some shots after the 1st hole

I guess I will try to answer the question myself. Perhaps its his balls or is that just for scratch baseball players.

Kostas just got flattened and knocked to the ground but there was no foul called. He continued his motion and swished the ball for 2.
I am finding the revolving lighted advertisements located all around the floor to be very distracting.

Kostas looked a bit winded to me. And one thing...they shoot their free throws better than the US!

Well...I decided to turn it on to watch him for a little bit. Within two minutes he was on a fast break and looked like he hurt his knee or ankle. Hobbled off the court. Looked like he may have just jammed his knee. Lets hope that's it. Jeesh.

I turned it on to see the trainers working on him on the sideline. Since then, Greece had a massive steal and dunk, and Kostas was the only player on the bench that didn't get up to celebrate. Hopefully this is just day-to-day.

This game hasn't exactly been played with a high level of effort by either team. I think they're all just coasting since it's a warmup game and they look like they're moving slowly.

But the way he lead the break and dribbled through those two guys at mid court before that almost makes you think he can play point guard!

He walked through the handshake line with a stiff leg/limp. Definitely not 100%.
Time for all the doomsday predictions and panic to occur!

For those of you who don't want to go back through the youtube video here is a gif from FlyerFaithful from when he got hurt.

No contact at all which is kind of concerning. All the UDpride amateur doctors are welcome to reply, but maybe Rollo can gas up the Royal Jet and send a doctor to Crete to get us some better info.

Horrible double dribble when passing the 3-point line. Hope his knee is ok obviously.
