There was no no no no no no reason for Dayton not to hold and shoot with 1.0 seconds left.

Can't have our senior leader take a shot like that with 4 seconds left. Bad bad bad.

We had so many opportunities to win this game. This is the kind of game you have to win at home if you want to play in the NCAA tournament. That last heave by USC did not beat us; the game was lost on the missed opportunities.

This game looked more like a couple NIT teams. Or maybe CBI.

By the way, Illinois State got blown out by Oakland in their next game after beating us...

Why doesn't Pierre or Sibert ever take the last shot instead of Oliver? Even Bucky said Pierre should penetrate. Young teams are not good on late game decision making!

Just watched the replay of the end. Not only did Oliver take a bad shot, but Robinson was wide open on the left side for the layup, because his guy slid over on Oliver. Bad read, bad shot, bad game.

DMO often tries to do too much IMO. This was one of those times.

Stats.....

Good shooting overcomes most other deficiencies.

Just saw the final stats......UD attempted 23 threes and made 6.

Awful. Just awful.

I agree. That and the poor defense on Wesley. Looked like Dillard was back playing D.

Interior defense, too. Seems like 90% of their buckets were easy lay-ups...

Winning this game should not have been a last minute decision.
I thought they learned their lesson from the ISU loss. I'm not so sure after this loss.

Too Much Seniority on This Team

Pierre and Sibert are the most talented offensive players and should be taking game winning and half ending shots for this team. But UD's point guards do not seem to understand to whom the ball should go. Coaches can help with that decision in practice and walk throughs. Seniors DEMO and Sanford should not be first options.

I'm not sure what kind of quality the USC big men have, but it will be one thing I am looking for in this game. Can we generate points close to the basket?
Here comes the infamous self-quote. It's my opinion that this fear came to fruition today. The 3 bigs of USC took away our dribble drive offense by sitting back in that zone and waiting for us to try to finish over them. I thought they dominated us in the paint on both ends of the floor. Thank God that Pierre made it respectable by giving us something in there. It's remarkable that he can score over 7 footers.

I thought the game was beginning to go our way at the very end after several of the USC bigs fouled out. At that point, I thought we had the advantage.

Khari took most of this threes out of the flow of the offense and a step deeper than what his range actually is.

Know Thyself

And while I'm at it - I have a message for this team and their coach - Know thyself. Over 10 games in everyone should have a pretty good idea of what they do well and what they don't. That goes for players and coaches. The best teams play better than the sum of their parts because everyone understands and accepts their roles.

Also, I have no idea what a foul is anymore. None. It's like pass-interference in the NFL - it could be called on every play or none of them.

And when did the NCAA legalize the euro-step? I thought we might get Manu & D Wade as the halftime show instructing in the finer points of multi-step rim runs.

And not picking on Vee b/c you see it every night somewhere, but in a game-tying or game-winning situation you never let the shooter turn to their shooting hand. You have to overplay and make them turn opposite or go under for an off-balance shot.

I noticed that most of his threes were not in rhythm and it seemed like his elbow was flying out, neither of which are good things when launching from the land of plenty.

Something the Flyers teach us every game...

Originally Posted by Whacker View Post

UD has already demonstrated that the team has the talent to play with anyone...and win. And it has demonstrated that it can play poorly and lose (or almost lose) to average-to-poor teams.

What the Flyers teach us if we haven't already learned it is this: Good teams don't just have very good players. Dayton has very good players. Really good teams have good players that play well consistently. Dayton does not...and has not for many, many years.

The Flyers have won games that surprise us, pleasantly. And they lose games that disappoint us, deeply. Is it mental?.....toughness?....maturity?... coaching?

I don't know. But, it's "always".
