Winthrop Game Thread
It's good to be home after a solid tourney out in Anaheim. A lot of improvement was shown, now it is time to fine tune in December before we start out conference play in a month.
Game is at 2 PM on Saturday Afternoon and will be shown on Fox Sports Ohio.
Possible Starting Lineup:
G 5 Keon Johnson 5’7” 160 SR Mansfield, Ohio
G 13 Bjorn Broman 6’0” 177 SO Duluth, Minnesota
G 10 Anders Broman 6’2” 190 RS JR Duluth, Minnesota
F 12 Xavier Cooks 6’8” 195 JR Wollongong, Australia
C 0 Duby Okefe 6’8” 230 RS JR Jonesboro, Georgia
Their two best players are Cooks (17.8 PPG) & Johnson (16.2 PPG)

I can see where you are confused. Those aren't their guards, those are their cheerleaders.

Yep, part of the NCAA fairness policy. Starting next year every team has to have an Australian, a Syrian and an Iranian, or they play all their home games on the road.

St. Marys, Nebraska and Winthrop definitely all start Aussies. Crazy. Archie might have to start recruiting over there.

3 bad turnovers. Scooch was lucky, that was an offensive push off. Sam with a pass to nowhere. Then Kyle tries to hit Sam when he was overplayed.

Finally we wake up. Great block by John and retains the ball.
Pollard a step slow. It will take him a couple of games.

Better 10 minutes to finish. Only 2 turnovers. Winning boards 21-13. Shooting 45% to their 36%. Their 5 threes have kept it close.
They have three starters with 2 fouls, and only Pollard for us. Cooke with 11 and Smith with 10 pts.

Nice halftime report on the 3 seniors going for the most wins in UD history for one class.
Tough, however, to see clips from last year with Big Steve in them.

Two points - our passing is awful. Mikesell was not out of bounds when he threw that ball in. He is going to get called for that "jump out."

We are 5-11 on free throws. Does this coaching staff emphasize it? Really lack of focus when you miss two or the front of a one and one.

Darrel Davis is one of the worst Flyers to ever wear a uniform who "earned" more than 15 mpg. Literally the worst player I've seen on both ends of the ball.

Did you ever think you'd see the day that Kendall is our best FT shooter?

I was thinking the same thing. His stroke looks a little better.

Incredible, given this was his first game in eight months. Lots of solid performances today. Johnson and Cooks were very good players for Winthrop.

Cooke, Davis and Smith shoot 19-34 with 46 points and 19 rebounds. I'll take those guards.

Bucky mentioned during the game that UD is #7 in the country in steals and they had eight more today.

Winthrop is a good RPI win. They beat Illinois several days ago -- Illinois just beat VCU. Winthrop will do very well in the Big South and are probably the league favorite. They have dynamic quick guards that can shoot or penetrate, and just enough bigs to keep you honest. Had they not turned the ball over so much (many unforced) in first 15min, we would have been in dire straits.

Agree on the good win but I thought at the time we could have been blowing them away if we did not turnover the ball so many times in the first 15 min. Turnovers were even for the game and probably pretty close for the first 15 min.

Think it's perfectly natural to come out of the gates slow after the intense weekend they had in Anaheim. Had to take time to hit their stride. Fortunately so did Winthrop. Can't argue with how they kept the foot on the gas once they found the pedal. Between the daylight savings time change, and then 5 days in the Pacific time zone, and back to the school schedule, then also factor in the weird times they had to play games in the Wooden L, these guys were really put through a time capsule.
So relieving to see Kendall relatively healthy and contributing. The team had to love it.

JB's Senior year was ok.

Their Junior numbers weren't too far off. But Jimmy started every game his Senior year and averaged 26 minutes and shot 41%/35%. So there's that to hope for.
The big difference is that Binnie was a scrappy and savvy floor player. DD is lost on the floor.
Nothing is instinctive or easy. Then there is that whipped puppy look that follows every mistake.

At times Binnie struggled with his shot, but he always was focused and gave it 100%. I cannot say the same of Davis yesterday.

As much as Binnie struggled at times with the college game, he was light years ahead of many who saw 15 minutes plus during the JOB era.
