Kennard declares for NBA
We all wanted Franklin's Luke Kennard to stay home to play for the Flyers. Well, turns out we only would've had him for a couple of years. He has declared for the NBA draft. I'm mildly surprised he didn't stay for another year, but look forward to watching him at the next level. A ton of underclassmen have declared, but only a select few will make their mark. Here's hoping our local guy will be one of them.

He was projected as a first round pick early in the season, and increased his stock by season's end. Interesting trivia, he is right handed, but shoots lefty.

i would have taken his pure shooting ability every day of the week for two seasons as a Fyler.. Think about what Wally S or Kyle Korver did in their careers In the Valley and the Mac. Kenard shot nearly 44% from the beyond the arch this year. Put that kind of shooting ability in the A10. With one extra pass, he's scoring 14-16 PPG yr1 18-20 PPG y2. Arch's team lacked a pure shooter.

He's a local talent and didn't go to an arch-rival. That makes it of interest to me even though I've been out of the area for almost 20 years.

I didn't get the sense that his stock had risen over the last half of the season. Seems like a late first-round pick and might slip to the second round. Very well could be available when the Cavs pick.
EDIT: Actually, looks like the Cavs don't own their first round pick. Kennard probably won't be around at the tail end of the second round.

Seems like a JJ Reddick type player. JJ has made a pretty good career in the NBA.

He's taller/longer than Reddick and utilizes his body much better as far as positioning opponents, especially being lefthanded..Plus, while a very average defender at best even in college, he's always in the right spot and gets a good amount of rebounds...I'm shocked from the standpoint that I really thought he wanted to come back and win a title..

re: stock rise, agreed and I think the whole Duke thing was a colossal flop...6 players last season and Allen's nonsense this year just seems like 2 years of turmoil he probably can't wait to get out of there.
Being a first rounder would be nice but he's going to make a lot of money in 3 years as a free agent

The people that I know that know Luke consistently talk about what a wonderful person he is, so good for the young man, and good luck in the pros.

Kennard did not make any preseason all ACC team, but was the only unanimous pick on the season end 1st team. He averaged 10 points a game as a frosh and upped that to 20 this year, while shooting 49% and 89% from the foul line. He was the only Duke player not to miss a game this year and averaged 36 minutes per game. Have not watched a minute of NBA this year, so I could care less, but one thing is obvious from watching a number of Duke games this year and last, Kennard improved immensely.

While he is a great scorer and bigger than Reddick he is not nearly the shooter that Reddick was/is.

Apples to apples, comparing their Soph years, other than free throw percentage, Kennard shot a better overall percentage and from three. Kennard was way better going to the basket.

Coach K sold his soul and starting going with the one and done guys instead of 4 year team players. Luke didn't like the new culture.

Reddick was a 1-trick pony at Duke...all he can do is shoot. Kennard can penetrate, dish and shoot. His skill set will allow him to make a good living for a long time.

Totally disagree with you unless you're talking just FT's. Redick never shot .438% from the 3 line which Kennard did just in his 2nd year. Reddick was under 40% his first 2 years from the 3 line.
Redick shot .472% from 2 point his entire career and Kennard .527....You're looking at the greatness that Reddck gave over a 4 year career and letting that engulf what Kennard did in 2 years..

As I stated in a post earlier this week I took the kiddies to the Tuesday night Cavs v Magic game. Watching the Cavs warm up was a true eye-opener with respect to what it takes to make an NBA roster...Cooke, are you paying attention?!
Iman Shumpert - 6'5" shooting guard drafted 17th overall in 2011 - made his first 13 3-pointers and was 17/18 in warm ups. And I don't mean standing still and shooting...he was rolling out and catching passes from an assistant, would turn and shoot and 'swish'. He's a career 34.2% 3-pt shooter (36.9% this season) and makes >$9.6M this season.
Kyrie Irving - 6'3" point guard drafted 1st overall in 2011 - made his first 14 and was 18/19 in warm ups. Again, he was shooting fade aways, leaners, etc...after receiving passes from his coaches. Then he started taking shots facing the basket with his feet criss-crossed (left over right, then right over left, then facing left with feet criss-crossed then facing right with feet criss-crossed) and missed 2 of the approximately 10 he took in this fashion. Kyrie make >$17M this season.
JR Smith followed and was just as entertaining...
As was Korver, Jefferson, Frye...these guys rarely miss...you get the point.
My point? There isn't a player on UD's roster remotely close to being as talented as Shumpert - who is 8th man on Cleveland. Any talk of any Flyer being an NBA prospect needs to be shelved until I see them nail 8/10 3's on a bad day during warm ups.
My 2nd Point? Kennard can shoot with the best...he's NBA ready.
NBA players aren't just physical freaks...they are talented, physical freaks. TV doesn't do them justice. See them live and you'll royally appreciate what it takes to make a roster. So appreciate our Flyers for who they are...Flyers...and, hopefully, students. Because none of them are NBA ready.
Or close to it.

Agreed, I was just saying he's not as good at that one trick as Reddick was. I think he is a far better all around player and is a better scorer, just not as good of a pure shooter.

Iman Shumpert was barely over a 30% career shooter from 3 point land during his 3 years at GTech. Cooke is nearly a 36% shooter during his career, just a tick under 40% during his 2 seasons at UD.
My assumption is that Shumpert did not come into the league with the ability to warm up that way and consistently hit the number of shots he hit that night. I'd venture you can say the same thing about Kyrie as well as most successful NBA shooters. They get into the league, and work their tail ends off to become solid, reliable shooters at different spots on the floor.
If you watch the NBA enough, you see "bigs" regularly nail an 18 foot jumper when left open. Its the type of shot they rarely even take in college, but thru time outside of the psychically dominate Shaq type, most bigs learn that they need to be able to reliably hit that shot or they won't be able to create the spacing necessary for their wings and points to drive down the lane.
Cooke will get a shot in camp this summer, will likely have to spend time in the D-league or overseas and perhaps get a real shot down the line, but he's going to have to put the work in to be an even more consistent shooter. No one you mentioned was as good when they entered the league as they are today, hopefully Cooke will be a better player in a few more seasons when its his full time job than he is today.

To repeat in very short form a story I've told here in the past, I went to a basketball camp where the featured speaker was Jim Clemmons. He was fresh out of the NBA. He proceeded to stand in front of 200 kids and hit something like 46 out of 50 shots from every angle between 15 feet and 25 feet going full speed with 2 balls and 2 kids rebounding. He then told us he was cut from the NBA because "he couldn't shoot."
And it was that moment I decided to dedicate myself to my studies. Those people shoot like gods.

For anyone that cares (I just happened to stumble across this so I thought I would post) it appears that Kennard was struggling to get playing time early on with the Pistons, he played in 5 of their first 10 games, then was shipped down to the G-league for a few days while Detroit had an extended stretch w/o games. He came back up a few days later and has scored in double digits each of the last 2 games and is shooting 31.6% from downtown on the young season. Perhaps he's starting to hit a groove and is learning to deal with coming off the bench, may be the first time in his life that he's had to fill the role of sub.
Meanwhile, Cooke is back up with New Orleans, though not playing much. I didn't realize that part of his 2-way deal is that he can only spend 45 games on New Orlean's roster, the rest has to be in the G-league, so expect him to spend more time down there soon.
Hope both keep on developing and realize their dreams.

I thought the "limit" was the # of games he could play at a set $$ figure. If he played more, then NO would have to pay him at a higher rate.

I'm sure there are stipulations that he can play more in the league, and earn more if his play/talent dictate that, but for a guy who barely gets off the bench, I'm not expecting that to happen soon, and thus expect him back down in the G-league honing his craft. Either way, hopefully he takes in what he is being taught, builds upon his skill set and crafts out a nice, solid career.
