SBU needs Dayton fans to become Bonnies fans for one night
I come in peace as a diehard Bonnies fan imploring all of our fellow A-10 Dayton fans to root your lungs out for St. Bonaventure tomorrow night. We need UCLA to realize that they stepped into a hornets nest from the minute they step on the court. Even if you hate the Bonnies more than just the 2 nights a year that we play you, I hope you can put that aside for the betterment of the conference and show the Pac-12 that we are not just a "cute little conference".
If that's not enough reason to wear brown for the night, remember Dayton will also make more money if the Bonnies win! Go Bonnies!!!!!!!!!!!

No worries here...don't like Schmidt's track record at UD Arena tho!

St Bonaventure is easy to root for here. Both Catholic schools and I am sure that I am not the only one who considered Bonaventure. Many friends went there. More importantly, we want you to make a statement to the PAC.
You know our arena and it will be fan friendly for the Bonnies.

Trust me, as long as your school name doesn't start with "X" and you're in our conference playing a power 5, you have nothing to worry about(rooting, not wearing Brown, get real). Kind of insulting though that you thought you'd have to ask, so maybe I will root for the Bruins now. No, can't do it.

I won't be in attendance but I will certainly be rooting for the Bonnies.
Warning to anyone in attendance - the Bonnies travel extremely well. For a school that size, they may be as good as UD. They also like to consume mass quantities of adult beverages.

Graduating from a Catholic high school on LI the "destination" colleges were Marist, Fairfield, Fordham, St Joes, Iona, Siena and St Bon. Always supported them as long as they weren't up against my Flyers.

We don't hate St. Bona... we might make fun of Olean, we might make fun of St. Weldaventure... but Mark Schmidt and your players are easy to like.

This guy only comes here to ask for our help. Never condolences on our losses at the hands of poor officiating. Never a congratulations or "good game" after a battle with his Bonnies. No "Way to represent the A10" when we went to the Elite Eight. And I'm guessing he didn't make the little drive to Buffalo to cheer us on when we were playing OSU and Syracuse in his backyard. No, just this post here and one almost to the day 2 years ago asking us to protest for them http://www.udpride.com/forums/showth...735#post450735

Smitty, they DID get screwed that year. We know how that feels....lighten up and support the Bonnies one day. For one time these guys are going to get a pretty good idea of what it would be like to be a Flyer. They may take that experience back and make a statement that St. B gets a bigger arena of their own. They got a great chance of making noise, they got screwed being an 11, same as us a few years ago. Support the Bonnies!

I want the Bonnie's to win and I think the winner beats Florida. My only hesitation is that if Bona wins too much Coach Schmidt could be stolen away from St. Bonaventure and that would be bad for the A-10. I'm amazed the guy gets the players he does. Living in Olean, NY in the winter and playing in front of 4K fans (albeit rabid fans) make it hard to attract quality players. He's a good coach. If he goes, do the Bonnie's slip back into a lower tier team in the conference?

I do support the Bonnies. But not because some sad sack comes here begging for our support. It's because one of my all time favorite players was Bob Lanier.

Warning to anyone in attendance - the Bonnies travel extremely well. For a school that size, they may be as good as UD. They also like to consume mass quantities of adult beverages.

Ah, good Catholics!
And I can’t make it, either, but will be pulling for Bonaventure all the way.

99.9% of this board don't have to be told to pull for the Bonnies. Trust me, Flyer Nation was already gonna be full throat for SBU the second the matchup was announced.

I hate to repeat myself, so I'll just copy and paste from 2 years ago(No, they were bubble and deserved to be left out):
meh. The Bonnies play a weak OOC schedule and their most impressive OOC win was at Buffalo. They split with us and swept SJ. They also lost at LaSalle. Seriously, with that kind of resume, they deserved to be left out when they blew it against Davidson.
The A10 is rarely going to get more than 3 teams in anymore and probably deservedly so until they can at least prove they can win at a better clip in the dance. In the past 2 seasons, 9 teams have gone and only 3 came out with wins(Dayton twice and St. Louis). The A10 has played 15 games and won 6. However 5 of those 6 came from our team and one was a play in game.
Take off Dayton's NCAA games and you have 7 teams in 2 seasons with one win against a first four team.
Face it, losing _avier, Temple and Butler is going to cost us bids.

Living near Olean I get there for the Flyers when they play at Bonnie’s. They are my second favorite team in the A10. Lovely school. I wear my Flyer colors and always feel welcome. I will be home but will be pulling for them. I’m sure the faithful will make them very much at home in the arena. More so than in their normal visits.

Also, we need to see if people b!tch about the Bonnies having a “home game” the way they did when we got thrown-in the First Four, only to have our next game in Columbus.

Radford too hopes for some Dayton support
For those that don't know, Ron Jirsa, former Purnell asst at Dayton, is an assistant at Radford now.
https://www.mydaytondailynews.com/sp...089g8kSZALzwL/
“I know what a special place UD Arena is, and I’ve seen the First Four on television, so I’m sure it will be at its finest,” Jirsa said. “It’s not like it’s a home game for the Dayton Flyers, but it will still be great. … Hopefully some of the fans will be for us, and maybe some of those fans that aren’t Radford fans but are rooting for someone else will come over with us for a while.”

They said the one senior shoots 40% from 3.
I can't remember when I rooted so hard for a non UD team. Would really be nice to end UCLA's season in Dayton, and see the A10 get a little love.

Bonnies representing the A-10 well. Up 28-23. Shooting only 18% for 3s and the Bonnies have 7 steals to 1 for UCLA and only 3 turnovers to 7 for the Bruins. UCLA with 5 blocks but expected with their height.

Our zone sucks
We are shooting too many 3's
no ball movement
Stupid turnovers
Our bench failed to show up again
When are we playing WSU?
oops, wrong game thread, sorry y'all!

Bonnies shooting 36% and 3for 16 on 3s. Bonnies tied because they only have 5 turnovers to 15 and 10 steals to only 1for the Bruins.

That was quite the game and the crowd really seemed to be pro- SBU (or, more precisely, anti-UCLA). Bonnies played tough until the buzzer and did a great job down the stretch.
Amazingly, UCLA's 7 ft. tree only scored 2. SBU got out-rebounded, but you wouldn't have thought that watching -- they got big rebounds when they really needed them. Big difference, though, was turnovers. 20 UCLA to SBU 6, if I'm remembering the board correctly.

You're welcome, SBUSwede. Tomorrow should be fun as well when Syracuse goes on the road to play Arizona State in Dayton. The reason the NCAA could end up taking away the First Four from Dayton eventually is that the fans have the power to turn any match up into a home game for any reason they wish. When I checked a few hours ago I still hadn't seen Gottlieb's tweets about how unfair it was to give StB a home game. Surely he'll weigh in on this gross miscarriage of justice, won't he?

The Bonnies brought their entire student body plus a heck of a lot of alumni. UD fans did support them but the fan noise and energy was due to their shear numbers.

Yes, I would say let's not pat ourselves on the back too hard. I was cheering for them, but there were a lot more St. Bona fans making noise than there were UD fans making noise for them.

I was setting in a section of nearly all UD fans, most of us relocated from our regular seats. Our UD section was definitely loud for the Bonnies, and yes, they had a very good crowd in and of themselves. But, much of the noise was coming from UD fans.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Dayton fans! It really sounded like the game was at the Reilly Center. It all helped make UCLA look uncomfortable. Way to represent the A-10!

All visiting teams had a small allotment of tickets. So fans from Olean were limited but loud.
Nice to see military represented in seats.

Nice to grab a W when your 2 studs combine for 6 -28 from the field on a court both have had success, yet, a 3rd scorer shows up and goes for 26.......Gotta figure Adams/Mobley ease into comfortability against Fl....I got the Bonnies winning 2 games...

I was at the games last night with my wife. The support for the Bonnies was pretty unreal and pretty awesome. Great support for the A-10. I hadn't been to a First Four event/games in a while, but the atmosphere was awesome. Dayton really knows how to do it.

Couldn't be happier for the Bonnies. What this play in game does do for some teams is give them an extra boost of confidence going into the main bracket. This team is more than capable of knocking of Florida. Good luck Bonnies!!
As for UCLA? Color me unimpressed. They looked like a poorly coached team who didn't resemble a "team" whatsoever. Too many players (I'm looking at you #3) who were playing as individuals and chucking too many threes. No way this team was deserving of a spot in this tournament. Kudos to Coach Schmidt for exposing their weaknesses.

I've been waiting for this matchup. I knew rollo would have fertile ground to choose from.
He gave us 16 reasons to like ASU.

No doubt UCLA had the size, but Bonnie has the athleticism and desire. Their defense caused most of those turnovers. I was impressed with the defense of the UCLA guards, and the job they did on Adams and Mobley.

I hope Stockard goes pro next year after that performance so we don't have to deal with him.
And I guess Adams might have still been hurt from our game against them because he had a similar type outing...

One of the best. He was Skip Prosser's first assistant coach at Xavier, so that should tell you all you need to know about his quality as a person (setting aside your presumed distaste for all things Xavier).

A couple of quotes from the Los Angeles newspaper:
“The Bruins were outhustled for seemingly every loose ball, outshoved in nearly every physical encounter, and outplayed even after the final buzzer.”
….
“Even the venerable Dayton arena, which has hosted more NCAA tournament games than any other gym, pounded all night on the Bruins. The place was filled with St. Bonaventure fans who made the six-hour drive from the 2,000-student campus located in southwestern New York. They booed UCLA's every move and roared with the Bonnies' every success. It was all so intense, it was surprising that afterward, they didn't become the first NCAA tournament crowd to storm the court.”
….
“He's done enough in five years, and has recruited well enough for next year, to survive what surely will be calls for his firing. But make no mistake, his career at UCLA will not survive another tournament game like this one.”
….
“It seemed like the Bruins spent the entire night backed against the ropes and covering up against a team that just kept coming.
"This hit us hard,'' said Wilkes.”

College basketball certainly has story lines that sometimes are hard to figure out. When the Flyers defeated St. Bonaventure 82-72 back on Jan. 3rd. Courtney Stockard, who was the star in the win over UCLA last night with 26 pts. fouled out in that game! His line in 28 minutes of playing time was 9 pts. on 4 for 10 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block.
Jaylen Adams was 3 for 11 (15 pts.) and Matt Mobley was 7 for 19 (24 pts.) Baby D had 28 pts. with a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line but after watching last night I still don't see how we won that game!
Of course, UD was hard to figure out the whole season!!!!

Not sure if I have seen this anywhere but 2 years ago when the Bonnie’s got left out, wasn’t it UCLA that got in when many thought they were undeserving? Or were they different years?

I can't say that I have been to every one of the now 123 NCAA games played at the arena, but I sure have been to most of them. To watch an NCAA game at the arena is a bit like watching a ballet or well rehearsed or choreographed play. So many parts and so many pieces and so many folks - all doing their job. Ushers, security, concessions, support staff - and much of it behind the scenes and not seen by fans like myself. Not only must they prepare for the regular stuff, but unplanned things like high water from the river, snow storms, presidential visits, or a myriad of other things. Even down to the person who got out the ladder at halftime last night and adjusted the new nets because they were not hanging exactly straight.
The arena has never looked better than it did last night. The video and ribbon boards, along with the new center video add so much to the fan experience. I have been to many other arenas for NCAA games. Some have marble floors or larger concourses, most seat 15-20,000 fans, but none have the intimate feel of a basketball only facility like our arena. For us hoops junkies, that is about as good as it gets - unless our Flyers are also in the big dance.

It did look like those nets were actually shorter than normal nets.

that was actually 2015, where they got a controversial 11-seed, yet advanced to the sweet 16
2016 they had a losing season

Last night watching on tv there appeared to rectangle boxes/logos one on the D and one on the N in Dayton. We tried to figure out what it was then in second half the rectangle boxes moved. One in front of the D and the other after the N.
Never did get a good view of either, but both seemed identical.
BTW my biz partner said the arena never looked better on the tube. Didn't believe it was UD Arena till he saw the UD logo.

There were. At halftime someone came out with a ladder and stretched them out so they would hang better, but after a few shots the nets pulled back up.
