Duquesne Game Thread
Very solid Non-Con by the boys! Conference play starts up on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
Part 1 of the 5 Game In-Conference Revenge Tour.
Game is at 2:30 and will be shown on the NBC Sports Network
G 1 Derrick Colter 5’11” 180 SR Forestville, MD
G 22 Micah Mason 6’2” 180 SR Natrona Heights, PA
F 2 Eric James 6’5” 205 SO Westerville, OH
F 33 L.G. Gill 6’8” 220 JR Chesterfield, VA
C 00 Darius Lewis 6’11” 245 JR Lexington, KY
We will face maybe the best backcourt in the conference, both big time shooters like we all know (Colter 17.8 PPG, Mason 16.1 PPG)
Let's get back at it boys! Boy was it great to see #21 last night... Go UD!

Pittsburgh papers reporting today that Micah Mason sprained an ankle in the Georgia Tech game Tuesday and his availability for the Flyers will be a game time decision. A shame he is hurt but it would really help the Flyers if he is out or his minutes are limited. He usually has good games against us shooting threes.

16 ppg and team leader in assists and 3-pt %. Dukes would clearly miss him...that said, I'm thinking there's no way he misses the conference opener.

Duquesne is scary. Make a lot of threes, which Dayton has not defended well. Have had more rest since GT than UD post Arkansas. Arkansas a very physically draining game, and travel not long after. Dukes got used to winning non conference. Dayton has a bad habit of laying eggs in Pittsburgh.

I am not sure which team looks worse, the Flyers or the Dukes. The Flyers have three turnovers and a host of cheap fouls.

Turnovers and rebounding. UD is -3 on possessions. Win this battle and UD wins.

That first look from Daryl was awful...no reason to force a three with 18 seconds left.

3's aren't falling right now. Cold start, turnovers, and a bunch of cheap foul calls. lucky the Duke's aren't hitting as well.

This score reminds me of a BG / Charlie Coles UD Miami game...minus being fundamentally sound.

Pierre is terrible on threes right now. Most of his have been wide open the last two games, and he has hit one. We need to stop with the threes and get it inside.

Mikesell with two great passes on the offensive end, and beaten like a drum on a baseline drive on defense.

Dukes are sloppy. Flyers are athletically sloppy.
Do we have to wait for the second half to see some respectable play?

There is Pollard again with two early fouls. When will he get some discipline? You cannot go for the block every time.

Because it takes less effort than driving to the bucket and initiating contact...stopping the clock...putting us on the line...and the Dukes in foul trouble...

This looks a lot like the Xavier game...absolutely horrible play by ALL the players. Daryl connects on the teams first three. I believe it took 16 shots to get it. I hope Archie lights a fire under their butts at halftime. Scoochie looks tired or something.

I'm not even sure, really, how to feel about that first half. On one had, Dayton's winning despite having three starters sit for the majority of the half with foul trouble, playing a long stretch with only one starter playing, and making only one of 17 three-point attempts. On the other hand, Dayton's only winning by five over a team which made only four field goals and has more (I think) points from the line than the field.
What a strange, strange, ugly half.

Did anyone read AM's lips and the fingerpoint as they walked off the court? Pretty sure he was pointing at Pollard and mouthed to Tom O something to the effect of an F bomb and whether or not the player had played basketball before...

I don't know if I should be happy we are up 5 with that pitiful first half or upset that we are only up 5 with the way the dukes played. We better come out ready next half.

I actually liked our looks -- basically all 17 threes were wide open. Just not hitting.
Playing amazing defense. Every shot contested.

I was at the Auburn game in Chicago when they went 0-25 from and 3 and still won the game.
This team doesn't shoot well and can't defend without fouling.
Most embarrassing thing is it's on national TV.
If Mason was playing, UD would be down 10

I agree, almost every three was a wide open shot. I suspect Archie will tell them to keep shooting if open. The law of averages usually plays out.
Our fouling is a joke. Four of our starters have two fouls. That is not refereeing, that is poor discipline. That last foul on Schoochie was just stupidity. He had no chance at anything, but swipes at the dribbler.
Being outrebounded 28-20, and they have missed all the shots. Terrible effort.

Defense is solid.
When the plan isn't working (0-17 3s) wouldn't it be prudent to try another plan?

The US forces could substitute this game's video for water boarding as a means of securing highly-important information.

I hate the new rules -- 15/30 Dukes points ft. Put your head down and jump into defender creating contact.
UD needs to adjust, swing it less on perimeter and put heads down and drive.

The ball handling by both teams has reached new lows. This is the sloppiest game I have witnessed in some time.

I think what's disappointing me the most, so far, is that despite this referee crew's willingness to call fouls Dayton's gone long stretches of being relatively passive offensively. Duquesne's sloppy aggressiveness has seen them camped at the free throw line while Dayton's had what? seven free throw attempts.
I'd like to see guys like Cooke start slashing more.

Actually he is beginning to do the things that he did in HS. It takes a while for big guys to adjust to the speed and to playing against other tall athletic players. I hope this is a sign of things to come from Sam. He is doing great today. Good for him

Followed him in HS, particularly after he committed. Hope to see good things from him. He is tied for most points (9) with Cooke, Pollard only 2 due to fouls. Pierre only 4, I think. God, please don't let this go down to the last seconds.

Here we go again: Dusquesne's shooting free throws for the final 8:15 and with the Dukes having only committed one foul, Dayton will be lucky to get into the bonus.
