Does Iona have a big enough budget for all of the recruiting "extras" a Pitino program is likely to require?

I guess the desire to WIN over rides the baggage/cheating that comes with a schools hire.

Would love to have been a mouse in the room during that job interview. Imagine that Rick's nose got longer by the minute. Where is JOB now? Will Pitino reach out one more time?

Tough break for former Iona hc Tim Cluess, I know he took a medical leave of absence this year, he resigned to focus on his health. He was killing it at Iona, 9 years, 6 ncaat, 2 nit, including 4 straight ncaat prior to this year. Pitino seems to be stepping into a very good situation overall, this year notwithstanding.

Detailed article in north New Jersey newspaper, The Record, part of NORTHJERSEY.COM.

Seems contrite and playing up the being back in the US and NYC area angle after coaching in Greece recently and not looking it as stepping stone to something bigger again. If all his problems are behind him and he does not deny and provide revisionist history, this is a perfect landing spot for a big time coach on the downside of his career and still wanting to be a part of college basketball.

Iona, like Hofstra, Wagner, St. Peters, Farleigh Dickinson are small NYC \ NJ schools that have always had decent basketball programs for their size.

Pitino is like a cockroach his career can't be killed! I'm sure he will try to run a clean program, the first week or two.

I didn't look it up but I think every where Mr Slime has been has been left holding the bag after he moves immediately before the hammer comes down (except at L where he didn't move to his next gig fast enough).

Being closer to NYC them hookers won't have to be compensated as much for travel expenses.

Iona is a catholic college in New Rochelle NY. Familiar with New Rochelle? I guess the containment zone couldn’t keep him out.

Interesting:

Ricky, ever the victim. What in the world was Iona thinking. But then again some Catholic Universities are not what they once were.

I would only play Iona if it was part of a double header in the Garden. UD/Iona and St Johns/Temple would be a nice weeknight bill. Iona’s “gym” is just a step above Fordham’s with even less parking.

Does Wake Forest ever have a realistic chance of competing in the ACC? Boston College? How about Vandy in the SEC? Northwestern in the Big10? Washington State in the Pac12? I know Vandy is good in baseball, Northwestern occasionally in football, but those other schools really don't compete at all in their respective leagues in any sport. A $15M buyout is absurd, but when you're trying to compete with Duke/UNC/L-ville, it's what the market calls for. How is that sustainable? Is this the next fault line in the realignment story?

Wake Forest was a competitive program till they fired Dino Gaudio. Vandy had some success under Kevin Stallings in basketball

Wake I believe is a pretty wealthy school. I think they've got a connection to the RJ Reynolds tobacco fortune

Wake Forest is going to be a bottom of the ACC. Odom and Prosser did a nice job but times have changed. They fired Gaudio and fell to the bottom of the pit. Even if they got a good coach he isn't going to stay.

Correct, they are very wealthy, as Reynolds gave them a huge endowment, a medical school and paid all their moving and establishment costs in the 1950's to move from Wake Forest, NC to Winston Salem, NC. It is a great academic school and a beautiful small campus, but they cannot compete with big brothers Duke and UNC, 90 minutes away.

As was pointed out, they are like the other academic schools, Vandy, NW and BC, who have high standards and poor athletic teams. Interesting how Duke and Stanford manage to do both.

Could be pie in the sky thinking but this might help UD. Wake could see guys transfers and recruits decommit. If you Wake hires a mid major head coach that sets off another chain reaction. Could put some more commits and transfers into play this May

Wake has a PG committed from Josh Cunningham and Kyle Davis's old high school Morgan Park in Marcus Watson. Played for the same AAU team as them as well

Not sure how good of a coach they can afford if they are on the hook for the $15 million. That is more than double what GT owed Paul Hewitt when Hewitt was fired being owed $7.2 million.

I checked some of the Wake boards, there is some talk of the buyout being not valid as they are claiming that Manning was supposedly fired for cause. I have no idea if that is true.

Also, the below board is very liberal in terms of the kind of critical, profane, etc. type of talk that it allows, so you get some/a lot of straight, heated, profane talk there.

Ask UConn how much fun they are having trying to fire Kevin Ollie for cause.

ETSU hc Steve Forbes is hired as the hc at Wake Forest. Thad Matta did interview. Pat Kelsey, Tommy Amaker, Wes Miller, and Ryan Odom were also confirmed as being involved.

Looks like Louisville and Pitino are getting smack-downs:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...s-over-scandal

I wonder how this will affect his Iona position. From the article:

"Pitino, who was recently hired as the head basketball coach at Iona, will likely be given a show-cause penalty, face a suspension and have limitations placed on his recruiting. The show-cause penalty is given to ensure the punishments stay in place for any future jobs Pitino may take."

I am glad that this is happening, I always thought that Louisville and Pitino got off with a very lite punishment in light of the severity of the violations.

Wake hc Forbes, as a TN basketball assistant, and Wake AD Currie, as executive associate AD, worked at TN at the same time for a few years several years ago, I wonder if that familiarity gave Forbes an inside track?
