Potential Assistants

Anyone hearing or seeing any potential assistants? I have heard next to nothing other than our fans hoping to keep Archie's assistants.

I hope you all realize it's not now a requirement to have a prior connection to UD to be on the coaching staff. Amazingly enough CAG (Coach Anthony Grant) does know other people. Heck I bet he's met Ray Harper before.

Goodwin must have some recruiting connections in the state ( including at home) and has a good track record at a lower level. He's no Ray, but who is?

I have learned over the years hiring friends (and family) is one of the biggest mistakes you can make in the business world, and this is a business decision for AG. Hire the best man for the job.

If you want Ostrom to stay you should at least learn to spell his name correctly.

All the assistants at IU are still on the website as active coaches. But you would expect some of that to change, it just doesn't happen on the day of the presser.

I would expect all the UD assistants to be present tomorrow because they will be under contract and with the team at the presser. That too will probably change for some at least. Would love to keep at least 2 of 3 but it's a long shot when any new coach will have guys they want to bring in. Tom Ostrom has know AG and his wife for 20 years, so I would expect him to be there either way to support the program and his friend.

Fully expect Griffin to head back to Syracuse where he played. Big questions are Ostrom, Kuwik and Comar. Would love to retain all three, but that seems unlikely. If I were Archie, I'd welcome the opportunity to keep a couple guys who have coached next to me with pretty good success the past 6 years.

The thread has focused on Ostrom. I know he is the primary recruiter on Wright. Do we know about the other recruits and also the players that each of the Assistants were able to get?

I don't know the answer. Are we focused on recency rather than consistency?

Why so? Obviously maybe, but you'd have to think that Kuwik is/was in the conversation as well. From the sounds of things, he was out of head coaching consideration earlier than Ostrom, and like Comar probably had the opportunity to move on sooner. Doesn't mean that Ostrom isn't the other coach, or won't be added to Archie's staff in the next few days if he isn't, but I think the other is just as likely to be one or the other.

Shaka went from the director of Basketball ops under Purnell at UD, to an assistant at Akron under Hipsher, on to Clemson under Purnell, over to Florida post Grant being there, to the head coaching gig at VCU when Grant left VCU for Bama. He was never an assistant at VCU, nor was he hired by Grant, though I'd presume the UD/Purnell/Hipsher relationship with Grant helped Shaka with each additional stop in terms of contacts and connections.

Weren't there some unique circumstances around Shaka's hiring at VCU? I couldn't find anything on the internet, but I did stumble across collegeinsider.com when Grant left VCU. Interestingly, Shaka was listed as the new coach and Archie Miller was listed as a potential candidate.

Wasn't Bruiser (love the name for a D line coach in football) someone some wanted for our head coach when Archie was hired?

Indiana's Archie Miller will hire Bruiser Flint as an assistant, per a source. Former head coach at both UMass and Drexel. #iubb
THAT is a GREAT start

Oh, well. We still have two to try to retain. I liked all three's credentials as being Archie'so 1st choices to join him.

I forget which thread, but Archie said that after the sports writer said MW had a spot at Indiana if he wanted it - possibly to cover his own posterior.

IU coaches page now has no assistants or director of ops listed. They were there this morning. Probably a courtesy to UD and AG to hold off until after presser.

If that was the case, then he should have said he was going to Arizona to take Sean's place, once Sean goes to IU to be Archie's Associate Head Coach.

Option for KK, TO and Ag (Allen Griffin)

Hope any, or all of you, that Mr. Grant wants to stay do. However, if you want to leave and want to be a division I head coach, keep reading.

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) head basketball coaching position is open. It is in the Big West, not a very good league and it may be hard to recruit due to academic standards.

BUT, your family will love Santa Barbara. For you, there is no division I or division II football. You should be able to recruit the Midwest. Since the campus includes a good length of ocean beach, You can honestly say to potential recruits that "It is often possible to see girls in two piece swim suits on campus"with a straight face.

Seriously, thanks to all three of you all for helping make the AM years at Dayton so great.

SORRY FOR ABOVE - UCSB POSTED THAT NEW COACH WILL BE INTRODUCED TUESDAY.

Jim Boeheim will hire former Syracuse guard Allen Griffin as an assistant coach, per a source. Replaces Mike Hopkins.

No surprise here... Thanks Coach Griffin!

Has to be close to a lateral move back to SU as an assistant. Name recognition is the game we're playing. Better gigs down the road as a result of that is why they're leaving.

Puzzling to me, his forte is recruiting the NY area. His career aspirations for himself must be limited unless he got the first seat job.

Hopkins was Boeheims preordained successor. Griffin may now have an edge for that in a few years.

Jim Boeheim will hire former Syracuse guard Allen Griffin as an assistant coach, per a source. Replaces Mike Hopkins.

No surprise here... Thanks Coach Griffin!
Just saw this. True, given his background: no great surprise.

Thank you, Coach Griffin. Among other players, you brought us one of the greatest point guards to ever put on a Dayton jersey (and we've had several great ones). Best wishes in your future endeavors (as long as you are neither recruiting nor coaching against UD).

I don't know what the plan is after Boeheim retires, but I'd assume Adrien Autrey, who was set to be an assistant for Archie at UD prior to an opening at Syracuse paved way for him there (and then led Archie to hiring Griffen) is the top assistant in line. He is listed as their current associate head coach.

Archie's staff

If reports are true, I find it curious that Archie plans to hire Bruiser Flint as assistant. I have no idea as to any past connection, but the fact that Flint replaced Calipiari at UMass, then moved on to Drexel (for 15 seasons, since fired) after losing the UMass job -- they (Archie and Bruiser) wouldn't have been on the same staff anywhere. That, and I always thought of Flint to be a bit of a loose cannon.

Cal knows the Miller family well, Bruiser knows Cal well. There's your connection, and like most everything in life, connections are a huge driving force in job opportunities.

Coaches network just like the rest of us. They meet while out recruiting, going to events, going to awards, going to their conference during the Final Four. And occasionally coaches will hire coaches they have never worked with before.

Thought this was an interesting article about Bruiser's year off from coaching. He hung around Larry Brown for a bit watching Kentucky (as noted Calipari connection) and Indiana practice. Both he and Brown were blown away by the attention to detail at Crean's practices FWIW.

Yes, but why does there have to be a connection? Just because they didn't work together doesn't mean they don't know each other. BG has made multiple hires of people he has never worked with before. It happens all the time. Archie had never worked with most of his staff before his time at Dayton. Just like recruiting players to fit your system, many times HC's look for coaches that fit roles or systems.

Interesting... with the pressure both Miller and Grant have with getting/keeping recruits - that Ostrom has not been tabbed to be an assistant on either staff yet.

Wonder if both sides have offered him a position, and it's just a tough choice for him - and it's taking him some time to decide?

I guess an ncaa recruiting violation is a recruiting violation...didn't take long.
I would expect ud to file an official complaint and the first ruling would be that mw cannot attend Indiana. I also hope this isn't true. If Olstrom initiated this by himself archie probably isn't happy to start his time at Indiana with a recruiting violation.

Anthony has coached one of the best point guards to ever play the game for two years, I would expect there is a lot he can teach McKinley

I sure hope not. We need a young, enthusiastic coaching staff to relate to these 18 year olds nowadays.

I wouldn't doubt Anthony has spoken with Dan Hipsher, but probably on his son Andy's behalf. I believe Andy was on staff at USF, but not retained by Brian Gregory. I think chances are decent he surfaces at UD.

Wouldn't surprise me to see former Marshall and University of Central Florida head coach, Donnie Jones on Grant's staff either...

That's my guess. He may be trying to balance an IU paycheck against some proven UD stability (and, probably, a decent paycheck as well). Plus, if it's true that he eschews the limelight (as in, he'd rather be a well-compensated assistant/associate than a head coach), then he may be giving UD some serious consideration. And frankly, MW connection notwithstanding, I always thought he seemed to be a good guy, and a good rep for our program.

Would love it if you'd stay, Coach Ostrom. If you don't, well, that siren named B1G is obviously hard to resist.

I highly doubt it's money. If AG tells Neil this is the guy I want, pay him--then he will. UD is already 'saving money' on what they will be paying their HC this year versus last year, so even if they bump up Ostroms comp, the program will still be coming out ahead. In the grand scheme of things we are talking maybe 100-200grand out of an almost $14m budget. That's roughly 1%. But like I said they aren't paying AG what AM made, so they come out ahead either way.

Let's not forget UD mens basketball revenue is higher than any other A10 school, and even Gonzaga FWIW, so adequately compensating a coach will never be the issue if that's what Neil thinks can keep this money train going full speed ahead. Especially as we raise funds for an expensive arena renovation.

IF Ostrom is weighing a job at IU v UD, it's likely for the same reasons AM left UD. At the end of the day you're coaching at Indiana, not Dayton. I think a more realistic scenario would be him debating if he wants to be #3 on AM staff or #2 on AG staff.

Did a little reading on Jeremy Shyatt and loved everything I read. Obviously, Wyoming is a recruiting wasteland, but it sounds like he's going to be a really good head coach some day. If he could be paired with a couple of coaches with more midwestern-based recruiting ties, I'd be on board with that for sure.

Wonder how long it will take to fill out the staff. I'm sure AG wants to be very diligent and pick assistants who can fill in the gaps, have complementary strengths, etc. Dead period ends shortly and you want to hit the ground running with potential recruits.

Who else did Billy Schmidt get besides Charles Little? I remember his connections were in the South

Seeing as how he worked with Anthony in OKC & knows the lay of the land from his time at Dayton he might be a potential assistant
