Smile Flyers Dominate Lipscomb to Reach NCAA 2nd Round

DAYTON (OH) – Overmatched from head to toe, Lipscomb University’s first-ever NCAA bid ended as soon as it started at the sellout Frericks Center on Friday night in the 1st round of the NCAA D-I volleyball tournament. UD swept the Bisons 3-0 (30-17, 30-25, 30-19). Now 33-1 on the season, Dayton advances to the 2nd round for the second time in program history to face Michigan State on Saturday night, a familiar foe from their first trip to the NCAAs.

The Flyers got off to a great start in game one, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Lipscomb ‘s front line had trouble handling Dayton’s size and it didn’t take long for the visitors from Tennessee to burn a timeout after falling behind 8-1 at the expense of several big-time kills to the body. It didn’t get any better after the timeout UD made a great save under the net to go up 11-1. A Lipscomb kill made it 13-2 to stop the bleeding they were forced to call another timeout down 15-2. Things never got much better of the remainder of game one and UD possessed that intimidating factor that’s carried them for much of the season. Both sides traded a several more points before a great one-handed block at the net made it 20-7 Flyers. A terrific kill and dink by Lindsay Fletemier made it 26-14 and the Flyers finished game one with a 30-16 win. Fletemier finished game one with seven kills and a .600 hitting percentage, while UD as a team out-hit Lipscomb .379 to .000 and owned a 13-5 advantage in digs.

Lipscomb started game two with much better intensity and took their first lead of the match at 9-8. They continued to hit the ball with more authority at the net and kept pace over the next several points before Dayton took a timeout up 15-13. Lipscomb did likewise down 20-16 as the Flyers started to once again take control. Leading the play was libero Adrienne Green, UD’s season-long bottle of glue that kept everything together. The Flyers extended the lead to 25-19 on the strength of Green’s floater serve and the Bisons called a timeout to stop the bleeding. Lipscomb won a couple long rallies at game point to stay in it, but eventually dropped game two 30-25 heading into intermission – an ominous position against a Flyer team that makes a living on going for the jugular. The Flyers out-hit the Bisons .333 to .114 as Yvonne Martin came alive in game two with nine kills – good enough for game-best alongside Fletemier. Erin Schroeder stepped it up as well, increasing her assists from 12 to 29.

Well-placed kills to open game three lifted the Flyers to a 9-5 advantage. When Dayton fed the horse (Fletemier), Lipscomb rarely has an answer for her punishing kills on top of the net. UD’s consistent play caused Lipscomb to call their first timeout of the third game with the score 12-6. The visitors could see the writing on the wall and as Horsmon sat on the bench with his legs crossed, everyone on the UD side of the net looked completely in control. Lipscomb traded a few points after the timeout and cut the lead to 18-15 with some nice effort and weak-side service, but had to call another timeout after a Flyer mini-run made it 21-16. Solid serving benefitted Dayton all night as Lipscomb had trouble getting a solid first touch of the ball to generate any substantial return game. That weakness let UD build a 28-19 lead out of the timeout and the Flyers polished things off for the 30-19 win and ticket to the 2nd round.
