Mississippi Game Thread
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas, etc!
Our boys get back to work on Tuesday... Game is at 8 PM on CBS Sports Network.
Potential Starting Lineup:
G 42 Stefan Moody 5’10” 179 JR Kissimmee, FL
G 32 Jarvis Summers 6’3” 186 SR Jackson, MS
G 1 Martavious Newby 6’3" 210 JR Memphis, TN
F 11 Sebastian Saiz 6’9” 233 SO Madrid, Spain
C 23 Dwight Coleby 6’9” 240 SO Nassau, Bahamas
Outside of the 3 guards, I took a guess on the two bigs, it seems like a few guys could start (multiple bigs with starts this season for them)
Jarvis Summers easily their best player.
Let's finish the Non-Con at 10-2 and get ready for the real season!
Go UD!

Don't know what the spread is, but this opponent is pretty darn good. Along with UConn and Arkansas, this team could be among top 3 on our ooc schedule.
They shoot the 3ball like us, hot and cold. They are an excellent ft shooting team (2nd in the nation).
Play decent defense. Steal a lot of balls and block a lot of shots. Rebound well and hit the offensive boards.
Here's the real kicker. They are 5-0 away from home.
A huge test for our quick small-ball.

My guess is that their returning players are looking for a little payback after DMO robbed the bank last year.

Sagarin has UD minus 4 (incl home court adv). The Vegas line should open close to that. ESPN shows Ole Miss with 2 away games...both wins.
"Huge test" it will be. Plan for a nail-biter!

A look back - http://daytonflyers.blog.daytondaily...ers-bank-shot/
"Oliver finished with probably the best performance of the season by any Flyer. He hit 11-of-14 shots, scored 26 points, had seven rebounds, five assists and no turnovers."

Mississippi has 3-0 neutral, 2-0 true away games. Shows they know how to win on the road. Outstanding ft shooting means you can't foul them late to get back in the game.

Per the TrueTeam twitter account, Sibert shot 81% on FG in practice today. Look for him to have a big game.

I guess I'm not surprised, but looking for an Ole Miss message board, and seeing to pick up some perspective from "the other side" and there is next to nothing. There wasn't much Ole Miss hoops discussion last season prior to the UD game, there is even less this year. 1 thread on a message board with 6 responses (its on rivals, so I can't view them w/o a subscription), another board hasn't had a post to their hoops section since before Christmas, and the discussion prior to that was sporadic, and on a few more sights, the hoops discussion is completely empty. Perhaps I'm missing somewhere with lively chat, but it seems like few care much about Ole Miss hoops, kind of sad, for while they haven't been great, its not like they've been bad (or even mediocre) since Andy Kennedy's arrival. I think this is the 5th straight season UD has played them in hoops, NIT final 4 a few years ago, then 4 straight seasons of home & away? Or perhaps these 5 games have been stretched out over 5 or 6 seasons, don't know for sure, but from a UD perspective, its been a good series. Good games, solid competition and to date they've won them all. Wonder if there has been any discussions about renewing the series again?

Rule Book please...
If I am correct, it is supposed to be a technical foul if a player dunks during pregame. If that is correct, these refs aren't watching and we should be on the line for about 30 foul shots to start this game.

Ole Miss and everybody in the SEC are a football schools, besides KY. The fans are only interested in football.
Went to Miss. four years ago to see our Flyers win. The seats were empty.

Hopefully. Pollard does it the other way. If he misses all his free throws warming up, he can knock them down in the game.

I love "good hands" defense. This team is hitting on all cylinders at this point. I hope they can sustain this on both ends of the court.

Team did look a half a step slower toward the end of the half. I think they said Miss can go at least 11 deep. Hope they have some Red Bull in the locker room....

My two favorite plays of the first half:
Of course, Wehrli's blocked shot and save.
Scoochie schooling Moody off the dribble, after Moody lost the ball and was on Schoochie like glue.

We made 6 of 9 threes to their 4 of 9. Shooting percentage even and rebounds even. Our steals (6) are the difference. And 6-9 free throws to none for Ole Miss.

I oftentimes will joke about "free throw defense" being lacking on UD's part, but one way to defend vs. FTs is to not send the opposition to the line--which is what they did in the 1st half.

That was a big-time play, no doubt. Pollard made an equally impressive play on the lay-in with the switch of the hands.

Pollard is doing a nice job passing the ball. That's something he was not doing earlier in the season.

Let's hope Ole Miss doesn't start a "hack a Pollard" and send him to the line a lot. I'd get real nervous

UD up 58-50 at the under 8 TO of the 2nd half
PG's are 2-10 from the floor.
Pollard and Wherli are 1-5 from the FT line

Bobby Wehrli can shoot free throws better than that. I have watched him in warm-ups and he has a nice stroke. I think he is just a bit nervous at the line now.

Who's the 'new' color guy?
During this TO nobody has mentioned that we have the Legend back!
Great commentary .. sounds like he is enjoying being back to see the 'GUY"S'

Still think we will be hurting during the season with a short bench. Fouls and fatigue will be major concerns through the year ....

Come on, Jordan. I know you want to put the dagger in them, but hold off on that shot so early in the clock.

They missed that 10 second call. Also, I didn't understand that 1-1 against Wehrli.

I would put Bass in and take out Pollard with 27 seconds left. I might put DD in as well. We need to hit free throws.

I don't care if we have 5 guards out there, as long as they can shoot FT's

Lack of depth showing here at the end. Flyers looked gassed.

Flyers win. Obviously they were running out of gas at the end. Nevertheless, a well played game against a very good opponent. They had some real studs on that team.

Hang on 78-74
Have to shoot better than 65% from the FT line
They got hammered in the 2nd half on the boards 44-33 for the game
But still a gutsy win for an undermanned team

Will take that game any day of the week Tommy. Hoping this game is a learning experience for Archie and the boys. Love this team, thinking 15 wins in A10 is not unrealistic if we stay healthy.
