Santa Clara Thread
NCAA didn't have 2 of Santa Clara's games, one a win and one a loss, therefore, their record is 7-3 and an RPI of 138.
As well, in non-5th-set sets, Santa Clara protects leads very well, but also doesn't come back well.
They are undefeated at 7point leads, but 19-3 at 3 point leads. At 3 point deficits they are 2-9, and actually 10-9 at a 1 point deficit.
Of course, their SOS is 239th, where Dayton's is 18th, so it could just be the competition.
Let's go girls! Win the weekend!

Holy cow. Not a single solo block but 32 block assists. Outblocked them 16-5. Needed every one too.

Wasn't sure what was going on especially in game 2, but Sheff stated in his post game that SC was changing their style of play both offensive and defensive causing the flyers to make many changes as well. At times the flyers were surprised by their play but never gave up.
Listening to Mike and Mandy and watching gametracker one could easily guess the girls were letting up, but not so according to Sheff. SC threw a lot of new wrinkles at the flyers they hadn't seen before and they made the in game adjustments. So while closer than expected they did survive, and now on to Delaware.
Go Flyers!
Good going Mike, you're sounding more polished with each broadcast. Still can't get the streaming on the iphone though.

Was surprised that Sheff wasn't more upset with the second and fourth sets, until I heard his explanation. Makes a lot more sense now. Sam Selsky (Santa Clara transfer) said that's how SC is - streaky. Figgie kind of referenced that in the original post. Good when they're good, bad when they're bad.
Also, as a note, Notre Dame was up 2-0 and had THREE match points in the third set. Delaware then went on a 16-1 run that bridged the third and fourth sets and wound up winning the match in 5. Should be a fun next two days at every match.

Illinois basically allowed one player to beat them tonight. Look at the stat line for Niemer. She is a beast (you wonder how she generates that power) but UD did a great job against her last year. Niemer had 28 kills, the next closest player for UC had 8 kills.

Santa Clara received votes in the first 2 polls this year. They returned most of their players and were ranked in the Top 25 several weeks last year. So I think 5 sets was a little surprising, especially after winning the first so easily. But Sheff was very upbeat about the 2 sets we lost. Said it was due to SC's adjustments and it took UD some time to counter-adjust. And boy do I like our chances in 5 set matches.
Also, I think people were surprised at how well Notre Dame did last year. But, they lost a bunch of players to graduation. And Delaware is a solid team. I would have picked ND going in, but I'm not shocked at the Delaware win.
This is a solid tournament, but I expect UD to put away ND and Delaware. Not a lot of teams can make the adjustments like SC mid-game. And I would expect our girls to really FOCUS to finish off the next two matches quickly. Boy did UDBrian have it right this week with his headline --- FOCUS ON CONSISTANCY. If we can close out Delaware and ND in 3, we will have again, for the 4th week in a row, gotten a lot better.
