I like the Ostrom as Senior Associate Head Coach; not sure Grant will like that, but I would be in favor of it.
Not convinced he gets half a mil per year for it, but whatever. To me, that should be the ceiling for a UD assistant...not the starting point.

Well he's already been here six years so isn't he past his starting point?

I guess you are likely correct, but man that is a **** load of money for typical professional work. Assistant no less, with no head coaching experience, and no real playing experience. I am not aiming this at coach Ostrum, but that is not a market place number, but rather a "Coaches Retention Fund" number. All over blown!
but notice I said ceiling. In other words, 500k as a starting point for an assistant to coach college basketball would be an outrageous amount of money. Even if some football conference schools have been doing it for a very long time. It's as illegitimate as the day is long.

Playing experience doesn't matter. Look at all the successful head coaches who never played - heck Frank Martin barely "played" high school ball.

But he was a bouncer and a teacher. Those might help you more these days than having been a former player.

I don't know anything about the source here, just on Twitter, so take it for what it is worth.
DaytonsFlyest @DaytonsFlyest
Sources: #DaytonFlyers Assistant Tom Ostrom is moving on. Won't be on Anthony Grant's staff.

If he really was in the running, it's hard to be the #2 to the guy you lost to.

Come on Dogdaddy. You can't put something like that on here from an anonymous account with 22 followers that was started yesterday.
It might be right in the end, but you can't use that kind of account as a source. I could start one right now and say the exact opposite.

Yeah, Archie probably set it up. Just putting it out there and didn't check the followers. Thanks for doing that as it made me feel better.

Hey, you are right about the playing experience; and I feel the same-way, but I was simply pointing-out that in Tom O's case, he was neither a player or former head coach. Just the facts. Obviously, that had at-least some impact here, one would think, as he lost out to someone with both.
Keep, in mind, I had folks on here asking me, "do you really think you could these jobs?" Uh, Yeahhhhhhhhhhh! You really don't have to be a DI player to be a good coach/administrator.

If Anthony wants to keep him he's going to have to outbid Archie is my guess, and I'd say a coach who might be able to keep most of your 5 man recruiting class together without having to spend all spring searching for JUCOs and Grad Transfers it would be worth it. Ostrom is known as a recruiter and having his midwest connections could be very important.
I know UD isn't Kentucky but UK's top assistant Kenny Payne makes 800k a year. And since UD most likely saved a pretty good chunk of change with Archie leaving I'm sure they've got a little cash to spare.

Look at Tom's options.
Recruit at IU where you can get 5 and star talent or recruit at UD where P5 schools beat you for top talent every day.
It may not be about the money. Money is not everything. It was not for Archie.

Money may not be everything when you're talking the difference between $3,000,000 and $3,400,000...but when you're talking the difference between $350,000 to $500,000 it holds a little more water.

He can go with Archie or stick with the guy(s) Grant and by extension, Billy Donovan who can get him an NBA job down the line.

I would be happy to keep all 3 assistants but we don't know how they feel about not getting the job. I wouldn't read anything into any quotes that come out just because everyone is going to say the right things.
If Tom O and/or Kevin K may not want to stay if they view themselves as passed over for a job they feel they should have gotten... regardless of liking the new coach or the school. I would expect that we will know pretty quickly.

I would be surprised if any of the assistants remain. They probably have offers already. I know Allen has two offers already.

Just curious as to how an Assistant Coaches contracts are structured. Are they 1 year, structured to release the Assistant if the HC leaves?
