A-10 Announces agreement Televise Events on ASN
A-10 Announces Multi-Year Media Agreement with Sinclair to Televise Events on ASN
The Atlantic 10 Conference and Sinclair Networks Group have reached a multi-year agreement to annually televise at least 52 A-10 events across seven sports on the American Sports Network (ASN). This includes coverage of both men’s and women’s basketball, and championship exposure in baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and volleyball.

Channel 45-2 is the local affiliate in Dayton. No HD -- like stepping back in time 7 years ago. Ugh.

It's good to see the non-revenue sports getting TV coverage. I've said before that I think the A10 becomes more viable by creating cohesion through other sports. TV coverage is a big Mother May I step toward just that. Now, if they could just take another big step with lacrosse....I can dream.

ASN had early rounds of the CUSA tournament on TV this year.
I remember when that conference was not terrible.

This deal is in addition to and not replacing other tv deals so in terms of basketball it's just more A10 games being televised, right?

I am not familiar with ASN . I don't know if I get it with my cable package. But as Swampy said, if Mark Adams is involved it can't be all bad.

No, it's not HD, but it's sports on local TV. It isn't just 45-2 that shows the games though, you have to check 22-2 and 22-3 locally. I was watching a lot of ASN coverage when I noticed it on. ASUN, CUSA, Ivy, and I watched Duquesne/ LaSalle on one night.
I'm happy to hear more sports will be on the ASN. Seems like an attempt to be like the old Raycom Sports was, before ESPN bought them out and really started ESPN360/ESPN3 in a large way.
As well, the championships of soccer (M/W), softball, baseball and volleyball will now be on ASN. So, CBS Sports Network has lost the volleyball final.
And 2 30-minute shows a week, one human interest, one highlights, will be nice to see as well if you can't catch clips of things elsewhere.

ASN works via syndication. It's not an actual channel on the dial.
I think it's a good deal for the Atlantic Ten (at least for the fans) because the games end up on local stations within the market. This means that people in the local area don't need to subscribe to a premium satellite or cable package to watch their own team play.
The vast majority of the games are also streamed for free on the internet, so if you don't live in the Dayton area, you can still get the game.
All broadcasts that I am aware of have also been in hi def. Chances are the local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, or some other local affiliate will pick up the games. It's a good deal that I think the A10 really needed. They need the games on locally, and they need them available to fans who have basic cable, or no cable at all.

If ASN is picking up games that aren't currently being broadcasted or are on some cable only obscure network -- like Time Warner Cable SportsNet or Comcast Sportsnet, that people don't have access to -- this is a good thing.
But being on a local subchannel -- which is often not carried by DirecTV -- has its own problems. Yes, I have an antenna and will be able to watch it (if I am not going to the game). But if it means pulling this off a network like ESPN, NBC-Sports, or CBS College Sports, then this is a downgrade in every sense of the word.

DirecTV will almost assuredly have it if you live in Dayton, and perhaps even if you don't. They picked up several games last year and had them on the RSNA channels. It's also streamed for free on the Internet.

FYI, American Sports Network is closing up shop at the end of the month, which means that some of those middling A10 matchups that made TV, won't any more.

I needed ASN for 2 games this year - @ SBU and St Joes. I hope Fox Sports Ohio and Spectrum/TW continue their coverage and maybe even add a couple of games.

This is a Big Step
backward for the Atlantic 10. But the cable tv industry is changing fast and taking us all back to rabbit ears.

For some of the non-rev sports, if they broadcast the entire championship I think that might be an upgrade marginally. The question is are more TV games > only the championship game on CBS for volleyball????? I tend to think more is better because you will find th channel if you know a game is getting tv coverage. So potential recruits will find you.

Well at least I don't have to explain what ASN is and what channels the games are on for the 99th time.
My guess is that Spectrum and Facebook Live will pick up some of the ASN games.

I think the eventual outcome is that every game is going to end up being a pay per view stream. Hopefully UD can figure out how to upgrade their pixel vision video equipment by then.

Definitely prefer ASN to Septrum/Time Warner as you don't need a certain cable provider to get it, in this area, you don't even need cable.

With the demise don't you think A10 will seek another cable/sports channel somewhere?
If so what are the possibilities? WO! Fox Sports One?

I'd like to see the A10 get an ESPN deal like the Horizon has. Between the TV and online channels, I think all the Horizon MBB and WBB games were televised, unless the host school couldn't support.

I know that UD is pretty locked in to ESPN for their early season tourney's, which is great. AND we seem to get some of the higher ESPN channels (ESPN and ESPN2) but I think that the ESPN financials is going to drag ESPN down over the next couple years. This may impact what they do with us. Also I am not a fan of ESPN3, isn't it basically a internet feed? Lower level announcer team and probably lower overall coverage on eyeballs. I haven't seen much on the other ESPN channels airing what the games are to be feed on ESPN3. Whereas they promote games coming up on their 'premier' channels.
Besides the level of coverage of Horizon League stuff isn't exactly what either UD or A10 need or desire as a model. IMO

The men's games show up on "real TV" on occasion, but the women's games mostly don't. I had reason to watch some Horizon games this year. Except for games at 1 or 2 schools, every game, both men and women, was televised in some way. That just didn't happen with all UD games.
If I have to watch an internet feed, I'd rather watch an ESPN3 feed with lower level announcers, which comes across great on an Apple TV or other set-top IP box for free, than truly crappy A10 feed that I have to pay for, and probably still has lower level announcers. Or worse yet, no game at all.

Appears that this venture is going to "relaunch" next month as STADIUM, a new cable channel. Will LIKELY maintain the same rights that ASN had, also adding rights from Campus Insiders. But the full slate of programming is as yet unclear, which I'm sure will be helpful in securing carriage agreements.
CI has rights to a number of FCS-level football games, but on the basketball front, they have rights to Mountain West, Patriot League, and WCC conference games. Put those on a network with the A10, and it could be interesting... but, as far as a money-making enterprise...
Good luck with THAT.

I think those conferences right now are not making enough money to justify limiting their exposure. If the choices are a little money and more exposure, and less money but way less exposure, then I think option B is better.
I actually do like to watch these conferences, so I for one am glad that STADIUM is stepping in after ASN folded. If they can get the games on in local markets and air them on networks that a lot of people can get without having to pay a premium for, then I'm all for it. When it comes to ratings and numbers, I think you have to focus on that first. If there is no money, then the best way to get money is to increase the viewership, and the best way to do that is to make the games accessible. Just my opinion.

I agree with you, but they are not going to produce games out of the kindness of their heart. ASN has already been doing that for 2 years and gotten basically nowhere. At some point, it has to equal $$$$ or it will go away. Somebody believes in this business model, but I just don't know how it will make money if there are no eyeballs and very little ad revenue.
The articles make it sound like their games will be available on the internet for free, so an internet subscription model is out (and likely wouldn't amount to much either).
