Mark Few

18 seasons at Gonzaga...18 NCAA appearances...never chased the "grass is greener" on the other side ... content where he and his family are at...
true dinosour among coach ranks...That said, best to AM and his family.
He made Dayton b-ball NATIONALLY relevant again. Looking forward to the future...Go Flyers!

Yes, but he was preceded by Dan Monson, who, after two years at Gonzaga, went on to an unremarkable tenure at Minnesota.

Gonzaga had never been to the NCAAs until 22 years ago. They now have more appearances than UD and the same number of Elite 8s. Why have they been so successful? Geography, for one. They are in the west where there isn't as much regional competition for recruits and more opportunity for regional exposure (vs. in the east/midwest/south where there are a lot more schools). Gonzaga has perfected winning a middling league while building their resume with solid non-conference scheduling. There also aren't as many similar programs in their region jockeying to fill that elite non-power conference niche.

Put UD in Spokane and we would easily duplicate what the Zags have done.

Good points Viper. I was merely trying to compliment both Few and then AM

My apologies if my comments came across poorly.

I agree and wish we could have a coach like Few who would both keep us perennially in the national picture and homestead. I just think we have a tougher road because of the issues I outlined. I think we'll have to accept this turmoil every 6-9 years if we want to have a coach who will keep us at this level.

I hear what you are saying about competition. If you drive 4 hours from Dayton you can hit Cincinnati, Xavier, tOSU, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Butler, Tennessee, West Virginia. Who am I missing?

EDIT: from the comments below: add Pitt, Purdue, and Louisville (can't believe I forgot these guys)
EDIT 2: Notre Dame! forgot them also
EDIT 3: If we stretch to 4.5 hours we get Ill st. and Illinois plus Chicago with DePaul and others.

One of the best posts of the day.

The "well Gonzaga has done it" argument drives me nuts. Aside from the excellent points you made, there are nearly 300 programs that would like to do what Gonzaga has done.

We have better facilities, fan support, etc. But there is much more to it. Getting angry because we are not the same as an outlier is slightly more rational than getting angry you didn't win the Powerball.

And with X and Butler being held up as examples, it doesn't take a genius to see the level of recruits at those schools improved when they went to the BE.

While I agree with some of the general thoughts on Gonzaga above, I think it isn't that far off-base to compare us to them. Both Butler's Final Game appearances were before the Big East, Xavier had great years before the Big East. So if making they were making the final game twice in a row from the Horizon League and now they're getting better recruits, they have to be one of the elites. Yet, Chris Holtman was more talked about on Indy sports radio as a candidate than Archie.

Where I think the comparison to Few is apt is that if Archie would sink roots in at UD and make it clear by turning down job after job by saying he's not interested in even talking about it, it's not at all out of the question that he could build a perennial Sweet 16 team. Expecting anything beyond that for almost any team is asking a lot with the parity there is today. Recruits would know he was going to be there. Fans would pack the arena every game. And he would win.

I think about this year had Big Steve not passed away and Kostas not been ineligible. Toss in no injuries, and this could have been a really special year. And we'd be set up nicely for next year. Alas, very tragically, that's not what happened AND Archie decided he wanted to chase the ring at a place that could be easier to do what I outlined above. However, IU fans want another banner. Fred Glass said he expects one or two more out of this hire. So, perennial Sweet 16 and routine Elite 8's with an occasional Final 4 and championship game appearance without hanging a banner will not be viewed as success.

Had Archie stayed at UD, I think he could have come somewhat close to replicating Few's success. The only thing I don't know is how the money differed. I saw he got 7 years / $21MM and I don't know if that includes endorsements or what (or if that's even true), since IU is public it will eventually be known.

Get someone like Archie or Few to stay. Supposedly, Few has passed on Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, and USC, maybe Stanford. That's lucky for Gonzaga. Consistent success breeds success. A lot of teams get a lot of TV exposure now, so that's less of a differentiator. Really not sure UD can DO much, but hope we find that guy or gal that loves Dayton and wants to win 438 games at UD and pass DD.

Congratulations to Coach Few on his first Final 4 in 18 years at Gonzaga...this year was only his 2nd Elite 8, the other was in 2015.

I am pulling for Gonzaga to win the title.

X now has the most d1 NCAAT wins, 27, without a Final 4.
