My take on this article is, “Cheat for 3 years; get suspended for 3 games.” If that’s the case, then how long would someone like Williams or Calipari need to sit-out?

What about Louisville?
If this has been mentioned I apologize.
I cant figure out how Louisville has seemingly escaped punishment from the NCAA. I thought I remember reading they were caught paying a player WHILE ALREADY ON PROBATION for the escorts/strippers/etc.?
Did I miss something or am I mistaken?

Doesn't matter. Cleveland State got whacked, so all's right with the NCAA universe...

Old expression.
If Ohio State or Michigan or Louisville is caught cheating, Cleveland State is given the death penalty. The money causes the NCAA to look the other way.

I read the link you shared. Thanks.
It says "As a result of a corruption scandal implicating various schools including Louisville on September 27, 2017, Louisville placed head coach Rick Pitino on unpaid administrative leave and athletic director Tom Jurich on paid administrative leave.[61] Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich would then be fired with cause by the University."
Where is the punishment? How is simply removing your AD and Coach suitable punishment for committing more NCAA infractions while already on probation?

My mistake, I thought that you were referring to the 2015 Louisville recruiting sex scandal.
The 2017 recruiting scandal trials just wrapped up iinm, and punishment by the NCAA has yet to be determined/the ncaa enforcement process is ongoing iinm.

That was my point in an earlier post in this thread. The NCAA feigns shock and outrage, and then takes it out on the little guy (with Cleveland State being a convenient “little guy” 30-some years ago).

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/...-pay-play-bill
This could open up a whole new can of worms.
"The bill, SB 206, called the Fair Pay to Play Act, would prohibit schools in California from taking away scholarships or eligibility from college athletes who use their celebrity to make money. Senate Bill 206 has cleared the state Senate and is awaiting a vote by the full California State Assembly."
"The Fair Pay to Play Act, which was introduced in February by state Sens. Nancy Skinner and Steven Bradford, also allows for athletes to hire an agent or attorney to represent them in business deals without losing their eligibility. Skinner said it would not require schools to pay their players, but instead guarantee players the same rights given to Olympic athletes. The law, if it is passed, would go into effect in January 2023.
NCAA president Mark Emmert wrote a letter to California legislators in May asking that they consider delaying their vote while his organization considered the impact of the law. Emmert suggested that California institutions, both public and private, would be barred from participating in NCAA championships if the law passed."

I hate everything about the idea of paying players. But, that doesn't mean we can't improve the current system which is admittedly totally dirty and screws the players.

Just remember every time a player gets a higher salary and the college players get more benefits and better facilities the ticket buyers and advertisers have to pay more. The universities will never take it in the shorts, only the fans will.

Looks like the NCAA and the schools in California are headed for a showdown.
"The California Assembly unanimously passed a bill Monday that would allow college athletes in the state to profit on their name, image and likeness, potentially setting up a battle with the NCAA over the future of amateur sports in the country.
In June, NCAA President Mark Emmert threatened that if the bill became law, schools in the state could be prohibited from participating in NCAA championships - a punishment that would cost California colleges and universities millions of dollars in media revenue.
Emmert's June comments notwithstanding, the NCAA President and the Board of Governors announced in May that they would explore the possibility of allowing athletes to be compensated for use of their name or likeness.
The NCAA does not currently allow athletes to profit off their own name, image and likeness. However, the NCAA, its schools, and the organization's media partners are permitted to use player likeness in advertisements and promotions."

This could get interesting. As I understand the bill, it would only prevent CA state schools from removing an athlete's scholarship and has no impact on whether the NCAA takes separate action. Athletes and programs still have to be NCAA "certified" for lack of a better term, so I suppose the NCAA could sanction a player or school accordingly.
Remember, it's not about the student-athlete -- always follow the money...

If just over three years from now we look up and see college athletes tweeting about their endorsement deals and making money off their talent, Sen. Nancy Skinner should be the person they thank for making such a reality.

The unintended consequences of this are enormous.
It’s one thing to tear down institutions, it’s another to have a plan to rebuild from the wreckage. Something George W didn’t consider fully when invading Iraq and something many politicians are not considering these days on many proposals.

The NCAA "Russian Probe"
I, for one am so sick of hearing about the NCAA investigating the cheating scandal. The NCAA moves slower than congressional investigating committees and accomplishes about the same,,,,,,,,,,NOTHING. How about NOTHING more on this topic until a significant penalty is levied. And by significant,I mean a LOT MORE than loss of a scholarship or two or the firing of an obscure assistant coach?

That’s basically how I heard it, too. Occasionally I heard the words “violations” and/or “recruiting” used in conjunction with that.

One of the blue bloods, Kansas, getting charged with lack of institutional control.
"Of utmost concern to the NCAA enforcement staff is the Kansas coaching staff's relationship with Adidas and its employees. The sneaker company was at the center of a federal investigation into bribes and other corruption in college basketball over the past two years. The Jayhawks are the company's flagship program and signed a 14-year, $196 million apparel and sponsorship extension in April.
Earlier this month, former Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola was sentenced to probation and fined for his role in pay-for-play schemes to steer recruits to Kansas and other Adidas-sponsored programs.
During closing arguments in a federal criminal case in New York in October, an attorney for former Adidas executive James Gatto told a jury that his client approved a $20,000 payment to current Kansas player Silvio De Sousa's guardian only after Self and Townsend requested the payment through Gassnola."

This is really serious. The football program and the track team better watch out, the NCAA might hand out the first death penalty punishments since SMU. Rowing also at serious risk.
Basketball? Oh they'll be fine. Nothing will be found.

What is the $3,000? The article is on GT who was fined $5,000 plus 2% of the basketball budget, about $250,000. Plus no post season this year and four years probation.

The board voted unanimously on Tuesday to clear the way for the amateur athletes to "benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness."
Good luck trying to control the levels of compensation.

Arizona self-imposed a one year post season ban as a precursor to the NCAA resolution of the 2017 FBI investigation. Of course they did, sacrifice the Covid year. There better be a lot more punishment coming from the NCAA.
"The decision comes as a result of the NCAA investigation stemming from the 2017 federal investigation into corruption in college basketball and college basketball recruiting. ESPN and The Athletic reported in October that Arizona had been hit with nine NCAA violations, including five Level I allegations. The Athletic reported that Arizona was charged with lack of institutional control and failure to monitor, and head coach Sean Miller was charged with lack of head coach control."

How honorable! Following the same path as Auburn/Bruce Pearle. We'll probably see Kansas/Bill Self do the same. Sure, self-impose a postseason ban during a jacked-up season that may not see a postseason, and knowing it's a freebie year for scholarships. It's hard to believe whoever wrote the press release for these schools did it with straight face.

Both Duke and Zion need to be severely penalized for these transgressions.

Not sure why Zion would be punished? Other than for tax fraud. OK...take away his future scholarship...

Yeah right, like that's going to happen - the NCAA will NEVER do that to K and Duke.

What are you going to do fine Zion?In 2-3 years he'll have made 50 mm just from his NBA contract. After that he'll sign a max worth 200 mm.

"As these allegations have been presented about Williamson’s family receiving payments over the last two years, Duke has always pointed to the NCAA Clearinghouse declaring Williamson eligible in 2018. Duke athletic director Kevin White, in statements released by the school, said Duke and the NCAA conducted enhanced background checks into the family’s finances to ensure no violations of NCAA amateurism rules had occurred.
Should the NCAA open an infractions case and rule that Williamson did indeed violate rules before and during his Duke career, it could rule the school has to vacate wins and serve other penalties for using an ineligible player even if the school had no knowledge of the violations. Duke went 32-6 during Williamson’s lone season, winning the 2019 ACC tournament championship but losing to Michigan State in the NCAA tournament regional final."

I can't imagine how furious the NCAA must be with Duke to have sanctioned Creighton.
