Ch. 7 weather > NCAAT games
I'm surprised nobody commented on Ch 7 breaking into the UK v UNC game mid-2nd half for 20 minutes to tell us it's raining in London, OH. They called it a 'life threatening' situation, of course, and had to keep us informed as the rain fell and the so-called tornado warning - where no tornado was spotted or identified on radar - just in case.
Idiots.
Thankfully the King has AppleTV and we quickly streamed the game onto the Royal flatscreen...and will be watching Ch. 2 news from now on.

That was terrible and poorly thought out. WHIO has other channels they could have told people to watch for that useless update, like 7.2 and 7.3. Speaking of whio they have the worst sports section of the local news channels. Some programs omit sports entirely. Somehow the wealthiest station in town has only one sports person (hartsock) to film, report and everything else. Being a weather driven channel with 4-6 meteorologists it's no surprise that a nonemergency update took precedent over sports.

We interrupt this program to up-date you on an important weather alert ........
It was reported a few minutes ago that the National Weather Service has determined a radar indicated tornado may be in the area.
As soon as we can confirm that we will return you to the UD-Kentucky game ... Check That ...... The UD-South Carolina err Check That One too! ....
We now return you to the Wright State-UD MLK Day game .... what's that? Oh! Check That one also!
Never mind, we will stick with the Weather Channel for now!

It could have been worse. Columbus had the game interrupted by their affiliate for a weather update and missed the end of the game!!

Why didn't they just run a marquee along the bottom of the screen.

on the 11 O'clock news, channel 10 apologized profusely an indicated that it was supposed to go to a split screen ..... but there was some kind of failure.... then they replayed the last 2 minutes.... like nobody already knew what happened....

While that was unfortunate timing, I can tell you that at my house just NW of Dallas last night, we not only had a tornado warning but baseball sized hail. This is the kind of stuff you don't want to mess around with. I'd rather get over reporting on bad weather than under reporting. Now, could they have done it with a scrawl line at the bottom of the screen? Maybe. But anytime there is a radar indicated tornado, just like we had yesterday, they are going to break in. As it turns out, the tornado was then confirmed on the ground. Fortunately, no major damage from the tornado. Significant damage from the hail.

For those of us getting fleeced by Spectrum, you had the option of turning to Ch. 12, Cincinnati CBS affiliate. It's not in HD but better than watching Brett Collar repeat over and over: "uhhh, let me try to go to another radar picture..." only to fail miserably.
Cox media does it again.

Was that Brett collar or Adam Sandler resurrecting his Waterboy character?

For the geographically challenged executives at WHIO CH. 7, London, OH is about 40 minutes east of Dayton...and 99% of your viewership is west of London, OH....considering the rain was moving east, it had 0% chance of affecting anyone who was watching the game on your channel.
The east-traveling storms in Texas were a greater threat to Dayton than the east traveling storm in London, OH. Life threatening or not, you screwed this up Royally.
I wonder what they would have done if UD was playing? After all, Kentucky - thanks to East Dayton, Springboro, the 'burg and small pockets in between - is almost as popular as My Flyers in this (red)neck of the woods.

At first they had a "crawl" at the top of the screen during the game. Then they broke into coverage - in fairness, the tornado sirens were going off - but I thought they'd go the split-screen route. Instead, all we got was the same crawl across the top, a black screen, and the weatherman's voice.

To further this point, Channel 7 said multiple times that the storm was not even in the channel 7 viewing area, but kept showing the weather coverage anyway. As far as London goes, I know that area well, they don't even watch Dayton local channels, they watch Columbus.

WHIO doesn't have an much of an interest in covering sports, unless it's to cover our former coach. Seriously, getting more air time for leaving than he did coming to Dayton. Hartsock and Jablonski are in Bloomington for the "announcement". I don't get it. If their resources are so limited, why are they now covering Indiana? I am certain it will be shown online for anyone who is interested.
