This honestly depresses me. I really liked Jhery's game. He was turnover prone but honestly a came out like a ball out of a cannon. Once he settled in, he was lightening quick, a good passer and he had a great looking stroke.
Good defender and legitimate play maker. I hope he goes someplace smaller and balls out then ends up in Europe.

Interesting quote "I'm not just a defensive player and want to prove that to everybody..." Well, the injury last year was unfortunate... and well, he had some opportunities this year and was out of sync... also unfortunately was never going to get higher up in the rotation. Hope he finds a place where he can get some playing time for his final year.

He tweeted out: "Thank you Flyer nation! For the past two years you guys made me feel like home. I appreciate you for the love and support throughout my years here at UD. Y’all have a warm place in my heart."

I think this quote speaks volumes. Not sure if he feels misused and/or underused here but he certainly knows what he desires is somewhere else. Something we haven't experienced much here but have now and that's kids entering our program feeling it's an opportunity for them to grow into a key player on a quality mid-major and then having our team become one of the best in the country and they are totally out of their league. Ibi even admitted he never dreamed he had a chance for another final four run when he signed with Dayton.
I'm sure that Matos brings more to the table than just defense, just not at the level of offense the Flyers played this season and hope to play going forward.

Too bad. Seemed like a great guy. He obviously wasn't high on the depth chart for next year though.
Now he'll be able to grad transfer and get some serious PT and hopefully play some pro ball somewhere.

I was just thinking yesterday that if anyone was going to leave the program I thought this was probably the last week we would see it. Sure there is time to enter the portal, but with nothing going on except online classes I thought any play thinking about it would be ready to declare their intentions. And, Jhery was the only one I thought who would leave. I thought he would try to go pro overseas.
Wish Jhery the best and hope he has a great final year. Get your grad degree and build your resume for a shot at a pro career.
I too think this is a sign things are looking good for next season.

Thanks for efforts, Jhery. Hopefully, you can find the right program for your next step, and make the most of that opportunity. Once a Flyer, always a Flyer. Best wishes, 31.

This is a bummer for me too. I'll bet he lit people up in practice, just couldn't get the game reps to show what he had. So much of the game is about confidence. I would not be surprised to see him scoring 15 a game somewhere next year.

I always thought he was a pretty good player, defensively and offensively. He was just on a very good team where there was stiff competition for minutes.

Hasta luego Jehry. This frees up a scholarship where we could upgrade talent as he was clearly the most expendable player. He contributed only 25 career baskets making one every 1.25 games played. Seemed like he was competing with Cohill for minutes and Dwayne was winning by a significant margin.
Wonder if he jumped or was pushed?

Jhery was a good defender and had a nice three-point shot when left open. The biggest problem I saw with Jhery was ball-handling. He did not seem capable of putting the ball on the floor and going to the hoop. Best of luck Jhery, no doubt the foot injury set you back.

I think AG has his own ethical way of influencing changes. My guess is there was not a push needed, but rather a nudge. Just like Jordan Davis. No hard feelings. AG probably helps with a job search that fits.

I don't think AG nudged Jordan Davis out the door. I think that was completely JD's decision.

We, as ardent Flyer fans, want another year(s) like this year, so we wish Matos good luck, but realize his level of player does not get us to another Top 10 rating. Most of us know it, and Grant sure knows it. Thanks Jhery, and now we upgrade.

Huge bummer. The guy I cheered for the most. I thought with his limited amount of remaining eligibility there was no way he'd transfer.
Can someone explain how this works? He only has one year of eligibility left by my count, so if he has to sit out another year I'm confused.
On the bright side this must mean we have a lot more talent coming in than we realize.

Since he took a medical redshirt year he is set to graduate and can be a grad transfer elsewhere without having to sit.

He’s a grad transfer. 2 years at a JuCo + 2 years at UD = 4 year degree...year 3 was a medical redshirt so he has 1 season remaining.

Best of luck to Jhery. I just wonder if he has enough of a body of work at UD to evaluate for a team looking to compete for a league title next year.
There are 10 other "coaches" besides AG. If "they" feel it's in the best interest of the player and the team to move on, they can get the message across.

Donnie Jones at Stetson knows who he is. Seems like it would be a good fit if Stetson’s current scholarship limit would allow it. Gets Jhery closer to home, he’s a known quantity to the coach, and a lower conference where he might do well.

Thought it was a possibility, but also thought he might be in line for more PT next year with Obi, Trey, and Ryan leaving. Then again, if he can't fill an inside role at all the minutes may have still been scarce. Stinks he had that injury back in 2018 when he had a real shot, but I wish him well wherever he lands.

Got sad again reading it. I talked to Jhery a couple of times,at a picnic and at VB and soccer matches. I really like him. My dream is that he lands at Stetson with Donnie Jones.

What a nasty way to say goodbye. Jhery, we hope you do very well wherever you land. Please ignore this rude and unnecessary post. It does not reflect how Flyer Nation feels about you. You are NOT an "expendable" player. We do not feel ANY of our players are "expendable" . . .

Was he pushed or did he jump?
Have to imagine that he would get a lot of playing time, having been in the system for a while and with three starters leaving the program.
UNCC is not a bad program, but not UD.
I would say pushed over jumped...

Either could be possible.
Three starters were leaving, but they were the frontcourt players. In the backcourt, he was 5th on the depth chart behind Crutcher, Chatman, Cohill, and Watson. They're all returning and new players are coming in. We'll probably play more 3-guard sets next year, but even with that I could imagine him moving elsewhere for more playing time.

I would not use the word pushed here. There is really no need for a third scholarship this spring. I am guessing that Grant was very honest with him and told him that he could stay if he wanted but playing time would likely be limited. I hope he really gets a chamnce next year. Seemed like a good guy.

Jhery Matos is an older guy. What we lose is a mature physically and emotionally player who knows the system. We’ll be replacing, most probably, with a younger player who does not know the system. I would expect a drop off of bench strength there. This is not good news contrary to some of the above comments. The only way this helps the team is if Grant finds a much more talented player. I also notice that Matos has already been taken off the roster on the Dayton Flyer web page. That is oddly a very quick change. Usually, the web site is slow to change?

I do not know why that is the perception on this site. They have to keep the website up to date on rosters per NCAA rules.

I do not know if it’s an NCAA rule, but traditionally they have updated the rosters of various sports teams timely, which is why Chase Johnson remaining on the roster appeared to be an exception and curious.

Why remove him at all? It's the 2019-20 roster which he was on.

I am pretty sure there is a rule out there on having to have an official roster accessible to opponents and media. Depth charts on the other hand are not required. This is why players are removed once they leave or added when they arrive on campus. I am guessing with Chase still being on the roster, that must either be procedural or the door is still open for him to return.

May be a paperwork thing too -- on the WBB side, Ella Skeens is still listed on Dayton's 19-20 roster despite announcing her transfer to Ball State on 24 MAR.

It's interesting to me that Chase hasn't hit the transfer portal (as far as I know)
I wonder if he's just done with college basketball

This would be my guess. He was still on the roster until this latest update. Maybe the staff had some small hope that he would be able to return.

I'll continue to hope and pray for Chase's return, while sensing the odds are very poor that it will happen. He potentially could fill Lander's big shoes both in stats and attitude. He is that talented.

You're right. Well that's even more interesting now isn't it? If he can get healthy and get his mind right he's got a starting spot.

Congrats to Jhery, who realized his dream of a college degree, by graduating from UD.
