AG is everything we hoped he would be ... and more. We knew he could recruit, but last year’s success and the development of Obi, Jalen and others is eye-opening on a national level. Tremendous get!

Who thought Archie leaving would be a god send? Congratulations Coach Grant and staff- your vision of Dayton as a nationally prominent basketball power is coming alive!
Welcome DaRon! When you do arrive to campus- you will not be disappointed! You have listened to your gut, understood that culture and coaching are critical, and made a very wise choice. Congratulations! You'll be a favorite son, and once a Flyer always a Flyer.

Not ragging on Archie but he never took advantage of our elite 8 year. Grant is jumping on our success of last year and taking advantage of it.

Handled the interview really well. I am amazed how well these kids do at 18 years old. Not sure I would have been ready for this at 18.

Nice interview, and DaRon sounds like a terrific, high-character kid. But I do wish the interviewer would learn how to pronounce Dayton. There’s a “T” in there! Not hard.

I’m stunned! And this coming from a guy who idolized players like Donald Smith, George Jackson, and Dan Obravac as a kid. Just - wow!
A hearty “Thank you!” and “Great job!” to Coach Grant and his staff. A hearty “Thank you!” to Jalen Crutcher, Obi Toppin, Ryan Mikesell, Trey Landers, and all the other players who believed in the vision that Coach Grant had for this program.
Welcome to the Flyer Family, DaRon!

Two fantastic recruits in the fold! I gotta believe Rafael would be excited to be a part of this group if CAG wants him. Sometimes the best recruiters are the other recruits.

Agreed, but one of my best friends from my college days, who came from New Jersey, has pronounced it “Daydun” for 40 years. And his son, who has lived within 15 miles of campus all his life also calls it “Daydun”. Go figure!

Not sure what criteria is used in the selection process, but is there any chance — as a consensus top-50 recruit — he could earn McDonald’s All-Star status? Of course, now that he’s chosen Dayton, he’ll probably fall to 70-80 in the next round of recruit rankings. 🙄

Once again, the fallout from "settling" for the easy coaching hire without a full national search.
Sorry couldnt resist. Guilty pleasure.

This is the kind of commitment that we used to dream about. It is starting to feel like national championships could happen. We had it stolen from us last year but I don't think we will be one hit wonders.

I can't help but say this. In his video DaRon really appears to have the same game that Obi had at the same young age. Very versatile and strong motor. And capable of packing some muscle on him to hold up in the paint.
Welcome DaRon.

That's an important step in the politics of D1 basketball. Sometimes it just takes one vote to attract attention from others and get the ball rolling.
Of course we have to help Jabo and win games. !

The comment I’m about to make is NOT meant to discount anything this coaching staff, program and the players who bought in and worked their rears off to make last year possible. But I also wonder if the following is also helping things at UD and in someway a part of the equation...
Pre FBI sting on college basketball, high school recruits and especially their families, were making money demands on big name programs to set up cash flow for committing to a program. Now that a couple people have been convicted and done some jail time, my guess is the cash has dried up. If so, these kids and especially their families have to re-think what they are really looking for. I think that is going to a program that can get you to the NBA (and that cash) as quickly as possible. Who can develop me to reach the highest level possible in a year of college basketball? Who runs an offensive that is closest to an NBA system?
Dayton and AG score very high in those two areas. Top recruits and their families are still looking for a big payday. I just think the little the FBI and NCAA has been able to do so far might actually be helping. And of course what a AG and the players did last year is a perfect storm that’s getting us serious consideration from Top 100 recruits. The bonus is, once they get on campus and in the program they will realize how special UD is and what a great choice they made.
As fans...start preparing yourself for one-and-done and two-and-done. That’s the company we are starting to keep and I’m ok with that because I trust AG and the staff will guide these young men to maximize their opportunities.

Archie did take advantage of our elite 8 year.....it got him the Indiana job. Archie saw Dayton as a stepping stone job. I can't believe he ever bought into the Dayton job being anything but. Coach Grant IS UD......graduate and coach, and he has the credentials to sell not only his program but the University as well. Certainly Coach Grant's reputation as a very solid human being is nothing but a positive for both him and UD. One must not forget his assistants either. Brian Gregory was much more a Flyer than Archie ever was.

Where's the 'dont tweet the recruits' crowd at haha. According to them we should be expecting a violation sometime soon.

BG was Dayton Flyers basketball and I think he could have been happy here indefinitely if the locker room didn't blow up and leave him needing to flee a sinking ship. He was fortunate to "fail up" by leaving before the losses started coming.
Ironically, Juwan Staten may be the best thing that ever happened to UD basketball. That disaster led to BG leaving, which led to Archie coming here, which led to the Elite 8, and now we have CAG, a lottery pick in the NBA draft, and now a top 50 recruit. BG was a good coach, but he wasn't a great coach. Archie was a great coach who didn't believe in UD. CAG is a great coach who believes in what he's selling. We may never reach last year's heights but we should be regularly in the conversation for a Sweet 16.

Cross referencing another thread...but anyone seriously thinking AG is considering the OKC job now? In my opinion, the only thing he’s interested in with regard to the NBA is what he can do to help as many of his guys get there.

I don’t think so. I think CAG truly enjoys the “molding” that he can do as a collegiate coach, as opposed to the ego-stroking he’d need to do as a professional coach. Plus, he just brought in the highest-rated recruit in UD history, to go with a highly-rated PG in Mali Smith, and other young men he’s recruiting to keep UD at the level we reached last season (i.e. National Championship contender).
If he was 40 years old, with a quarter-century of coaching ahead of him? Maybe. But at around age 55, with 30 years of coaching already under his belt? No, I think he’s more interested in having a legacy of NBA players that he coached, from Joakim Noah and Al Horford, to Obi Toppin, to (hopefully) Jalen Crutcher, DaRon Holmes, maybe Ibi Watson, and who knows how many others. Anthony Grant is one of us. Anthony Grant is UD.

That's a fantastic point I lost sight of in the euphoria. How many times has UD been on the offramp of something right as the highway cleared?! Maybe, finally we were in the right place at the right time.
Not that Arizona (his home state) has anything to worry about when it comes to FBI investigations.

Young people look at life that way. After you've had the experiences and can choose from the menu of available choices, only a great fool would leave UD now. Grant can live out his days in a nice community surrounded by nothing but support and adoration, or enter the hyper-politics of running some top-5 program or an NBA franchise?? It's a dead solid no-brainer.
Work hard every day (because he knows no other way), win games, make long term decisions because there's no risk that 1 losing season will get you fired, and be HAPPY.

The thing I notice about his highlight reels:
1. The number of highlights that include him making both fundamental passes and very difficult passes. It's not just him dunking.
2. The number of highlights that include him shooting jumpers. Stop and pop, catch-and-shoot 3's, good fundamentals with good balance.
He doesn't look like a super-high-flyer (meaning Chris Wright level jumping ability), but neither was Obi and he's going to be a top 10 draft pick. He just looks like a basketball player with great physical ability.
Whoever his high school coach is, we need to get to know him really well.

I'm wondering about his growth history. Is he finished? How tall was he a year ago? He is going to be a beast with 10-15 lbs of muscle added, final height notwithstanding.
Can't imagine how thrilled Weaver is this morning. Weaver, Smith, and Holmes. Sweet.

This may all be true but I think in all likelihood AG has not been approached about the OKC head coaching gig. At 55 he is not the prime age to start his first NBA head coaching position. It is not as though he was the #1 assistant at OKC and his coaching personality is better suited to coach moldable college players rather than NBA players.
I love AG and the job he is doing at UD but the above aside, if he was approached for an NBA head coaching position, I think he would have to at least listen.

Not sure what percentage impact this has or had on UD recruitment efforts. If we don't get to have the season we had (last year #3 and 29-2) and Obi turns out to be a "good" player rather than the consensus POY in all the land, Grant doesn't become COY, and there is less hard evidence that Grant & Co. can develop players and elevate a program. Lacking that, we are probably looking at an average interest in mid level players rather than presenting a compelling story line that Grant & Co. can pitch to any player and family alike.
Grant would still have a personable, human relationship with the potential recruit and family but personality only goes so far. Just look at Rollo for how that works out!

NPOY and NCOY on top of the probable 1 seed in the tournament last year mean A LOT, IMO. Add that to the fact that we were probably the most entertaining team to watch in the country last year and had a lot of hype for that final undefeated streak going into the tournaments. That all makes us a very recognizable name in college circles right now. When I read the reactions of other sour fans when we land a good recruit these days, there is the usual saltiness, but there is a little more holding of the tongue because we have a record of success building that is getting hard to poop on.

With all these recruits that AG and his staff are landing I am hoping and praying that this Covid 19 has a vaccine approved which can put an end to it as soon as possible. We all want to attend Flyer games again but we know this season will be slim pickings. All I know is that the future is bright and even though the 2020-2021 season can't be expected to even come close to the 29-2 record and potential #1 seed we accomplished last season just to be able to have the excitement of attending home games on a regular basis again will be a blessing!
We have a great roster now but when we add Malachi, DaRon and whatever others AG gets commitments from for the 2021-2022 class we will be loaded!

Yeah, I mean, if LeBron doesn't put in all those hours practicing, he's just another big guy in Akron.
If Coach K didn't recruit all those players he's just a regular coach.
If Michael Jordan broke both of his legs as a child, he doesn't becomes the GOAT.
Deep thoughts.

If I had to put my finger on any special sauce Grant has, I think its his personality. He just has a presence of excellence. Thinks before he talks, doesnt rush things, calculated, calm. But very fiery in those needed moments. If you are fiery all the time it just becomes white noise. Grant knows when to go gonzo and the few times he does everybody knows he means it. Hes just very approachable and not stand-off-ish. Whether he's a genuine people person or not I dont know but he always gives the approachable vibe.
I think this is what differentiates him from Archie. I liked Archie. Archie was precisely the right guy for the right reasons after much loved but aggravating BG couldnt get us over the hump. Archie came in with some fire and brimstone and cared about nothing else but basketball. He slept in the gym and did interviews only because he had to. He was wound tighter than a knot. He was a lot of things but a people person he was not. Maybe that high-strung personality didnt work well with some higher level recruits. Just spit-wadding.
I dont know how much being a minority helps but you'd probably chalk it up as "not at all hurting". Being a UD grad helps a bit. Feeling like its a destination job to reassure recruits helps a little. Having NBA sideline experience helps a little. Being well-connected at both the college and pro level with knowing the right people helps. Being respected by high-level coaching peers like Billy Donovan helps a little. Having prior college coaching success at VCU helps. Doing better than coaches sandwiched around Grant at Alabama doesnt hurt -- the further removed he is from the Bama job the better his resume' looks considering nobody has lit that place up despite thinking they could do much better than AG.
When the dust settles I dont think its any one thing but a combination of things. But if I had to put one thing at the top of the list it would be Grant's personality. The dude is just as cool as a cucumber. He and Jay Wright are without a doubt the two best looking coaches in a tailored suit in all of college hoops. The man oozes class.
That said, you still gotta win. BG oozed class too but it wasnt quite enough.

Perfectly worded Chris. I’ve always thought he’d connect with any and all players .. 1 star to 5 star. I’m liking that the 4 and maybe soon 5 stars are looking our way. Couldn’t have a better person leading this program.

I think you're missing one of the most important things.
If you were being recruited by Anthony Grant or Rick Majerus in his days at St. Louis, psychologists have repeatedly shown Grant would have a huge advantage.
A young black family will be attracted to an attractive, young looking, svelte, well-dressed black man. Appearance matters. Grant looks like he could be running a fortune 500 company or an actor alongside Denzel Washington. We like to be around attractive people.
Should it matter? Argue all you want. It does.

I'd simply say that Coach Grant brings to the recruiting game what any high schooler's family (Mom's in particular) value for their sons; COY credentials, a role model they can relate to that has strong family values, getting a sense that their son will be in a great place at UD and will emerge 4 years later with a maturity that few youngsters have the opportunity to receive. The UD campus supports this vibe and is seen as a nurturing, safe environment where ethics & values are in place everywhere you turn, and where individual support in earning , not be given, a degree is available.
The one thing we have not had was that proven pathway to offer to these kids to reach their dreams of attaining basketball nirvana- whether it be a chance to appear on SportsCenter's Top 10 highlights, NCAA tournament fame, or a pathway to the riches of the NBA. You know who has changed that overnight.
We seem to be arriving at a key point where Dayton is knocking on the national spotlight door. This a special time, make sure your seat belts are buckled.
We must keep CAG and his staff at all costs.

I agree, but I think there was one more item that really, really helped Anthony. Obi Toppin. Made Anthony a better coach and gave UD a big spotlight.
Obi might be the biggest difference maker on and off the court the program has ever seen.
I believe the secret to Archie was recruiting players who had chips on their shoulders by not being slighted by the bigger programs. His best players were either dumped by major programs (Jordan) or were overlooked by major programs (Scoochie, Kyle, Kendall). He got them to buy into a system because of their attitudes. It is harder to do that with a player who thinks he will be in the NBA next year. I believe Anthony understands that mindset better because of the time in Florida and OKC.

With the extended interview and the blog that was posted, I think we were given a great deal more insight into this young man that we typically have seen in the past of our recruits. In addition, what we saw there was pleasing to the eyes and ears. You can understand why AG wanted this guy and not just for his abilities. He seems to really understand what Grant is all about. Grant is about hard work, development, team, selflessness and discipline. You can hear that in DaRon's words and he really understands what UD stands for and what we want to accomplish. Really looking forward to what this kid will bring to UD both on and off the court. Obi was special not just because of his on the floor skills but how he presented himself and UD to the rest of the world. I think DaRon has that same ability.
By the way, I have pronounced his name about 5 different ways to myself. Can someone give me the correct version?

I try not to get to up or down on recruits, but Junior year highlight reel I saw was extremely impressive. Looks like he is equally comfortable inside as shooting from deep. Great handle for a big guy. On first look he will create match up issues. Keep it rolling AG!

From watching Daron’s highlights, I see some Deandre Hunter in his size and style of play. Now let’s hope that his tenure at UD ends the same way that Hunter’s did at UVA.

This article was posted today by Jablonski. There are some quotes from his coach and also his father on the recruiting process. (It wasn't Obi Toppin's story alone.)

Not to beat a decades old dead horse...
BG was an ambassador for UD and a good man. He would have been happy here indefinitely, but the fans and University wouldn't have been.
With all of his good qualities, his system and ability to get athletes versus all around ball players held him back from doing what AM and what AG has and will continue to do.
That isn't a knock on BG, just the fact that AM and AG are on another level in terms of completing the deal in terms of running a program successfully.

The coaching staff deserves all of the credit in the world, but Obi certainly helps in a lot of respects. I stand by my request to retire #1.

Obi is a special player and a special man. He will be this generations all time UD favorite player. I would like to think any UD player in the future wearing #1 will wear it with honor and pride. I would like the team to select who gets the number each year in honor of Obi. Who is that special player each year? Give him #1.
When the next generation comes around and #1 is just another number ... yes retire #1.

two players DaRon mentioned in his
interview were Efton Reid and Ty Ty Washington..
both have a professional upside with
continued progress....
Efton Reid
6'11" 225 C ranked #22 or 24 national,
#4 center in the nation...
Ty Ty Washington
ranked #57 or #68 national
#8 or 13 PG... 6'3" 185

https://247sports.com/Player/Efton-Reid-46055252/
trust in CAG,
he'll pick the ones that fits
his concept, that see eye to eye
of that I am sure...

From Jake Weingarten:
“Dayton’s highest-rated recruit in the modern era, Da’Ron Holmes, will sign his NLI with the Flyers next week, a source told @Stockrisers. The Montverde Academy forward is a Top-60 prospect.”

No box score but Monteverde lost to Lake Highland Prep 68-62 the other day. Here are a bunch of photos taken at the earlier Westminster game—DaRon is #31:

Thanks,
At least we know he can grab a rebound, didn't see much else on there. I assume they will be on TV at some point. IIRC, he had 3 high rated teammates on that squad, should be used to be part of a team, rather than "the" team as so many HS kids are. Hope he can contribute strongly from day 1.

I was checking on Monteverde and DaRon and they are rated #1 in the nation and undefeated. What swampy posted was a game by their CBD team, sort of a JV version. They are just destroying teams by an average of 50 points per game. They just played the #23 ranked team and won by 62 (not a misprint) points. They are all 4 an 5 star players and would beat 65% of college teams IMO.

They have several games coming up in January on ESPN where they play the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the country. DaRon is very very good. He is 6’9” and long and can handle the ball and shoot it.

To back up TA111 their scores have been:
109-31, 89-46, 89-41, 97-77, 79-32, 76-37, 98-49, 90-17, 83-33, 107-45.
They had to really be sweating out that 97-77 game.

Thanks, Jack72, that schedule will be handy as I want to watch as many games as I can. DaRon is our highest rated recruit ever and I can't wait till he hits campus next year! Look out A-10 the Flyers are loading up for 2021-22!

I have looked everywhere and cannot find individual stats. If someone has a MaxPrep membership, they can get individual game's box scores. The stats would be somewhat distorted given the blowouts they have played in.
