Trey Landers
Trey has a role on this team next year... not sure what/where but he can play. I was at the game and watching him during shoot around and then the last few minutes on the court, he just looks like a player. He moves and does things that not all guys on the court can do. I'm confident that AM has a plan for Trey.

He was very impressive in the few short minutes he played. Aggressive always, smart, strong and more. He is a stud. Might occupy Kendall's place next year as an enforcer.

Perhaps RaymodWaleskowski can tell us why Trey Landers should start. Afterall he and Trey attended the same high school.

He is extremely athletic and has learned to move without the ball. On the defensive side of the ball, he is a bit of a "bull in a china shop," but that can be fixed.

I don't think he was expected to contribute much this year as it was. On top of that to Archie's admission he was forced to go from a wing to a 4 with Josh's injury and that slowed his progress a bit more. He seems to be locked in and happy and I agree, we could see a significant improvement next season. He may not have a super high ceiling but I think he's poised to be a really solid player for us down the road.

Don't get me wrong, Trey looked good today and showed some potential...but he was playing in garbage time against a 9 win SLU team. Why don't we at least wait until he gets in during garbage time against a better team before we start calling him a potential starter for next year? I think he has a chance to be a decent player, but he hasn't played anything close to meaningful minutes all year. It was a great effort, he showed good things, but lets pump the breaks before we get his expectations too high for him to meet next year and we start threads for him to transfer.

I am betting he starts or is first off the bench next year. This isn't based on numbers or who he has been on the floor against. This is for a few other reasons.
His moves without the ball VERY well, if not better than many on the team. He gets open because of athleticism. He is strong and quick. He has a much better physical build than the overwhelming majority of freshman...he's built like a junior. He is aggressive at getting to the rim and getting behind his defender to get action towards the bucket. Bench/role guys that don't get many minutes usually aren't aggressive. This leads me to believe that he is getting opportunities in practice to be "that guy" on the second 5....I think this transitions into him easily sliding into a prominent role next season. Defensively he didn't have a clue in his first outings. He hustles his A off on D and gets to the spots in order to play strong defense. He is quick to get to the ball from the help, he has the guts to slide into a guy and make contact.
The little things that I observe him doing on the floor makes me think that he gets it in practice and is probably pretty productive in practice. I also bet that he is tasked with being the toughest "opponent" when going up against the first 5 in practice.
In the end...I like the kid. He is VERY respectful and as a person, I can see him as a student of the game when it comes to being coached. I don't know this as fact, just guessing from my interactions. I don't see him as someone who came in as a kid that thinks he knows everything. I see him developing as a stud over the next 3 years. Face it, he is a step in front of every freshman walking in the door next year. Both Trey and the incoming freshman have to prove themselves, but Trey has established some position on the team and the new guys aren't just going to walk in where Trey is delegated to a limited role in the future.

I agree 100% with what you are saying. And even in the few times he has gotten in, he has looked better each time. Last night was the first night he was not fouling every time down the floor. It is clear he is getting use to playing at the speed it takes to play at a high level DI game. But as we have seen, people change their minds on a kid real quick around here and start forcing a player out the door.

I'm concerned whether he will be back next year. Once he gets evaluated by the NBA scouts he may take the leap.

A comment the TV announcers made is that Landers is a member of the "0% body fat club" or something along those lines.

I agree he has looked better each time we get to see him on the floor. Strong, aggressive, athletic. Obviously he wants to do something when he gets out there but I think he is forcing the offense less and getting better results in return.
Thanks to shocka for the insight. What position do you think he plays next year? Seems to me it could be anywhere from the 2-4.

The bench reaction to his plays last night speaks volumes as to what kind of teammate he is.

Scratching my head trying to understand this. First off, Trey has looked far worse than last night in a few other games he's played in garbage time against other not-so-good teams so nothing wrong with pointing out the obvious in that he's looking far more comfortable as a Flyer and playing better..
Secondly, please do explain just how the scrubs on "better" teams that hardly ever get into their games except for when their respective team is wiping out another team or getting crushed are really better than the scrubs that play on bad teams? All kinds of players whether all state, all area, or all city in their HS days fill up many of the best rosters/benches in America along with plenty of walk-ons/preferred walk-ons..I'd even go out on a limb and say the scrubs on St Louis are far more experienced as they get far more playing time since they are getting blown out of far more games than UD is blowing teams out..

I said multiple times in this thread he looked better last night. I was not taking away from his play. Just trying to temper expectations for the kid so we don't have another Oliver, Crosby, Miller situation.
As far as the second thing, its kind of explains its self. VCU's bench is probably a lot better than SLU's bench. Most good teams have better backups than bad teams, don't you think? I'd rather see what he can do against them and hope he can play just as well as against a SLU team who is starting a walk-on and most of their bench is walk-ons due to transfers and injuries.

Maybe, maybe not. Most teams have 12-13 players on a team and who plays when, once outside of the normal rotation of players when"said" team is getting blown out by 30 or up by 30, we really don't know? When you get down to the 9th-13th player I doubt very very much there's a difference at all between the players on UD/VCU versus the rest of the A10. The back-end players on Duke/NC/KY and a few other top 10 teams I'd agree with you ...It's all relative..

But he wasn't playing against their 9th-13th player. He was playing against the 12-16th. They have 4 transfers sitting the bench that can't play. That's 4 scholarship players and their starting PG is out for the year (not officially but Ford said as much as last night). That means they have 8 scholarship players. So your 9-13 are all walk-ons.
EDIT: And if you watch as much A10 basketball as I do...VCU's bench, Dayton's bench, Rhode Island's bench >>>> SLU's bench, Duquesne's bench, UMass' bench. You can see a clear drop off from the starters for the teams at the bottom of the league that you do not see from the teams at the top of the league. If the bad teams in the league had more depth and better players on their bench, then they would be playing.

No chance Trey starts next year, but he'll definitely be in the rotation on what should be a forward dominant team. Of the new recruits, I don't expect Pierce or Nahziah to get much playing time as they have a lot of experienced players in front of them. Nahziah might get similar PT to what Trey has had this year, but I expect Pierce gets redshirt ed.
Point Guards: John Crosby, McKinley Wright, Darrell Davis in a pinch
Off guards: Darrell Davis, Jordan Davis
Forwards: Josh Cunningham, Xeryius Williams, Kostas Antetokumpo, Ryan Mikesell, Trey Landers, Matej Svoboda
Bigs: Sam Miller, Jordan Pierce
The questions then become:
Does Kostas start?
Do Josh and X both start?
As an older player, is Matej plug and play as a 3 point specialist?
How often do we even play a big?
Plugging all this into a traditional depth chart and answering some of those questions, is have this:
PG: John Crosby, McKinley Wright
G: Darrell Davis, Jordan Davis, Nahziah Carter
F: Kostas Antetokumpo, Matej Svoboda
F: Josh Cunningham, Ryan Mikesell, Trey Landers
F: Xeryius Williams, Sam Miller, Jordan Pierce
Notes:
I think we rarely play a traditional big next year, but when we need one it'll be Miller with Pierce redshirting
Josh will play the "5" spot some as well as X and Sam
Despite looking buried on the depth chart, I think Trey plays 12-15 minutes a game next year in multiple roles
McKinley Wright and Jordan Davis will need to contribute right away
I think Kostas starts and will give us some nice mismatches.
Matej will be primarily instant offense off the bench and a 3 point specialist in the beginning
Jordan Davis will play some at the 2 and 3, as will Nahziah Carter when he plays
I'm certainly not looking past this season and the current great seniors, but next year will be new and interesting.

I agree with a most of what you are saying, but I highly doubt Pierce redshirts. This just doesn't happen much in college basketball anymore. Worst case, he gives you some minutes as a rim protector.

The lights are definitely going on for Landers to where he can see playing time, but his big problem is his size. He has to get an outside shot and/or become a Kyle-like defender, otherwise in the normal half court game, teams will leave him unguarded.

I liked what I saw from trey last night. He still has some rough edges, but they are definitely starting to get rounded off. His energy and strength are terrific. Not saying he is going to be a world beater, but i certainly can see him making an impact in a key spot on this team before the season is out. He is getting more comfortable and i seeming to understand his role when he's out there. Also, as someone else noted, I was really impressed with the way his teammates were rooting for him last night.
