In another game from Tues. 2/7 Jordan Pierce's Union Catholic Vikings lost to St. Mary Elizabeth 57-41 leveling their record at 9-9 for the season.

Jordan's name was not listed in the box score so if anyone can find out whether his coach disciplined him for the altercation with Nick Richards of the Patrick School or if the New Jersey High School Basketball Association leveled a one game suspension it would be interesting to know!

Rollo the Ref should answer this, but I'm pretty sure fighting is usually a 2 game suspension by NFHS. NJ could be different though because some states choose to modify some of those rules.

It doesn't have to be a fight that gets you suspended for 2 games...it can be 2 technicals in the same game or 1 flagrant technical, too.

"The player is ineligible to participate in ALL CONTESTS until 2 contests at the level of the ejection are completed.

Example: If a player is ejected from a Varsity contest, he/she cannot participate in any freshmen, JV or Varsity contests until 2 Varsity games are completed. "

At this point, correct me if i am wrong, all of the available schlarships are taken except one that Archie always keeps unused . That is, unused in case Artis Gilmore walks into his office like he did at Jacksonville State and says i'd like to try out for the team.

Just to follow up from previous posts, Isaac Kante, (6'8, 220) formerly on the Dayton radar, in 2017 January and February time frame, has received offers from DePaul and Fordham.

I believe all scholarships are presently accounted for.

If Artis Gilmore walked into Archie's office, I'm guessing Archie would find room for him one way or another.

Typically, across the country, not just at UD around 1 kid transfers per school, so odds are that somebody, and I have no clue who, nor will I speculate, will transfer out of UD for one reason or another. Its been that way for a long, long time, and has been increasing over the last decade.

Seems like Archie would have better use for a scholarship than a 67 year old man. Also, I dont think he has any eligibility left.

In the final game from Tues. 2/7 Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney defeated University Prep in overtime 74-72 running their record to 12-5 for the season.

In the article I read Nahziah fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and their was no box score. I will report on how many points he had if I can find one.

Their next game is next Tues. 2/14 at home against McQuaid Jesuit.

What about the sophomore, Ball from Chino Hills, who put up 92 last night. I suspect he will join his brothers at UCLA. Nice player, but the game was a mockery. No defense in that game, as the other team stood and let him score. Meanwhile Chino played 4 on 5 on defense as Ball stood at half court and beyond. Disgusting display of basketball, or no basketball.

Based upon an interview on ESPNews, Ball got a several of the points clearly cherry picking. It was an intentional effort to run up his scoring stats as high as possible to garner him as much press and as many interviews as that type of scoring would get.

He then utilized that spotlight to turn the attention to a classmate's need for a heart transplant.

I didn't catch you they were interviewing... it appeared to be a local reporter.

McKinley Wright never ceases to amaze me! Last night his Champlin Park Rebels, after a close first half, outscored Centennial 43-19 in the second half to win an away game 73-46. McKinley had 28 points leading three players in double figures. Champlin Park is now 19-0 and McKinley is averaging 21.6ppg.

He could average 30 a game if he was not a team player but that is a good attribute! In seven blowout wins this season he scored 11, 11, 15, 16, 17, 19 and 21 primarily because he rested for most of the second half! UD is getting one heck of a player!

Champlin Parks next game is Tues. 2/14 at home with Blaine.

We haven't had any outgoing in like 2-3 years, I dont think. Which is the exception in todays NCAA. Not the rule. Average is usually 1 outgoing per school. Since the exodus of that Juwan Staten class, I would be shocked if we haven't had more in than out.

None lady season, but gave the season prior, iirc. Prior to that the two kids from Columbus were booted out, prior to that there was khaki price, prior to that it was darenbecker. Thru some form or fashion it's a fairly consistent 1 kid out per year on average across D1

McKinley's stats last night were not bad... 28 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, 1 block... pretty good lol

I'm going to be fascinated to see who the finalists for Minnesota Mr. Basketball are going to be in a few weeks... Likely Wright and the two UW signees, Davison & Reuvers, will be there.

Dutch Fork ended its regular season on Fri. evening losing at Irmo 71-62. Dutch Fork tried a pressure defense in the second half but Irmo's guards were able to handle it and, at one time, were up 70-46. Dutch Fork was outrebounded 40-24!

Jordan Davis had 22 points and was the leading scorer for the Silver Foxes.

They open on the road for the playoffs which start Wed. 2/15

The Union Catholic Vikings won on Fri. evening 2/10 in OT at home against Nottingham 79-76. This was the second consecutive game that Jordan Pierce did not dress due to the penalty set down by the NJHSAA.

Union Catholic's record now stands at 10-9. Their next game is Sat. 2/11 at home with Ewing.

Ask and you shall receive! I checked JonathanGivony@DraftExpress and found out that Matej Svoboda's team, Cez Nymburk, resides atop the Czeck NBL Standings with a 22-1 record. They are the #1 seed in the second stage round 1 playoffs and Sat. 2/11 crushed BK Kolin (11-12) the #6 seed 90-57. Five Cez Nymburk players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for the next games.

Matej Svoboda played 3 minutes and had 0 pts. missing his only three point attempt and getting one defensive rebound. Do not be disappointed, springborofan, because although I didn't see all of his boxscores his average is close to 20ppg in 23 games! To me the most encouraging thing, besides the fact that he shoots 50% from three point range is that he shoots 80% from the free throw line!

Cez Nymburk will play against BK Decin (16-8), the #3 seed, on the road in the next round on Tues. 2/14. I will post results next Wed. if I can find a box score.

The younger players are not actually paid to play so they maintain their amateur status. The structure of European basketball is similar to soccer in that each team is actually part of a larger club with a development structure made up of several teams of younger players. The youth players are developed by the clubs and the good ones are promoted to the first team sometimes. At that point I believe they can choose to maintain their amateur status if they are considering coming to the US to play college basketball. The structure of basketball and most sports is much different in Europe. High School sports are basically non existent and it is left up to the clubs to develop players.

That's nice of Pierce to take it easy on Dayton. Very thoughtful.

Champlin Park has moved up to 4th in the USAToday computer rating, but they are still not in the Top25 of the so-called Expert poll. Are you seriously an expert?

In the first game of the SCHSL playoffs last night the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes from Irmo, SC defeated Conway 63-57. Jordan Davis, with 10 points, was one of three players in double figures for Dutch Fork.

Don't know who Dutch Fork plays next but will try to find out and post results as they hopefully advance.

Dutch Fork (16-8) plays at Goose Creek (21-2) in the Round of 16 on Saturday night.

On a side note, South Carolina high schools have fun names.

Nahziah Carters team, the Bishop Kearney Kings, from Rochester, NY won their last regular season game last evening downing the Park School of Buffalo 87-81. Nahziah led 5 players in double figures with 29 points! Bishop Kearney was trailing 39-33 at the half but outscored the Park School 24 to 12 in the third quarter!

Bishop Kearney finished the regular season with a 14-5 record and Nahziah's 29pts gives him 380 in 19 games for an average of 20 even!

I will try to find out when and who they play in the first game of their playoffs and post!

Somehow, I missed a game for Bishop Kearney! They lost last Sat. afternoon in an exciting game 73-72 to West Genesee so they finished theregular season 14-6. Nahziah Carter had two huge dunks in the fourth quarter which tied the game twice and Bishop Kearney led 72-70 with 3.2 seconds on the clock! They were beaten by a long range 3 just inside the half court line at the buzzer!

Nahziah had 20 points so his total is 400 for 20 games!

Sounds like Jordan Pierce will be more of a raw project. Davis and McKinley seem to be more polished players. Just looking at boxscores that is.

I would be extremely shocked if he redshirts next year. It just doesn't happen in college basketball anymore outside of partial qualifiers, transfers, and injuries. Who was the last player UD redshirted not for the reasons above? I honestly cannot remember off the top of my head.

I think Keith Waleskowski was the last UD player to be a healthy redshirt. That was 18 years ago. And he was a walkon that year. I

I don't know who the last healthy and academically eligible player to be redshirted was, but it just does not happen in NCAA anymore. It would shock me if any player was redshirted next year.

And can someone please answer the trivia question of the last scholarship player to be redshirted was. I really have no idea who it would be.

I don't disagree that Pierce is a project. But just for point of comparison, he's averaging about 10 points a game. One of Kentucky's prize recruits -- the 6-11 kid who got in the fight with Pierce -- is averaging a little over 11 points. I know nothing about the level of their competition or their individual skills, but it's more proof that bIg guys take some time to develop.

It's also a function of guards who don't know how to feed the post. Rarely is a guard coached that in AAU or High School.

You're probably right but he probably won't get much more than Landers type minutes next year.

The Union Catholic Vikings and the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes were both eliminated in the quarterfinals of their respective state tournaments on Sat 2/18. 5th seeded Union Catholic was defeated by 4th seeded St. Mary Elizabeth 43-39. Kyle Lofton led the Vikings with 19 points and Jordan Pierce had 2 points on two free throws which seems to lay credence to all the above posts saying his minutes will be limited next season.

In the Dutch Fork game I may need some help with an explanation again (like the fight and technical on Jordan Pierce a while back) because Dutch Fork was defeated by Goose Creek 56-49 and Jordan Davis name was not even in the box score! Something doesn't sound right because I know he couldn't have been held scoreless! Could not find an article on the game.

Both teams seasons are over while Bishop Kearney and Champlin Park haven't started tournament play yet!

Correct. Tough way for his HS career to end...

"Dutch Fork finished 16-9. The Silver Foxes left their Class 5A player of the year, Jordan Davis, back in the midlands with the flu but rallied from a 12-point deficit to lead briefly, 36-35, in the second half."

http://www.ourgazette.com/sports/gat...570d4b1ac.html

As the article says, Davis was named 5A (biggest division in SC) player of the year earlier in the week. It was the 2nd year in a row he was named SC player of the year. Last season he was 4A PoY when Dutch Fork played in the smaller classification.

Champlin Park continued their winning ways on Tues. night, 2/21 by defeating Elk River in an away game by the score of 90-61 running their unbeaten string to 22 games! McKinley Wright led all scorers with 21 points and is averaging 22 on the season! Box score did not say how many assists and rebounds he had but he has averaged 7.7 assists and at least that many rebounds for the season.

Champlin Park has 4 more games remaining before the state tournament starts and in their next game they are at home on Thurs. 2/23 with DeLaSalle.

Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney Kings, opens Section V ClassAA tournament play against Gates Chili on Wed. 2/22 on their home floor. If they win they would play on Sat. 2/25 against the winner of #4 seeded Aquinas and #13 Webster Schroeder.

That would also be Keith. He was both healthy and academically eligible. The reason he was a redshirt was Purnell was out of scholarships and he was willing to pay his own way for a year with a promise of a scholarship the next year.

I am not sure how that fit within the rules of recruited athletes, or if the rules were different then.

Last redshirt for a healthy, academically eligible, not suspended scholarship player - I can't even think of the last one.

They still allow that, it's called a grayshirting. Something else that typically only happens in football now.

For sure. Archie is selling development and playing minutes, and the recruits are willing to compete for those minutes. If they aren't up to the task they will know why and will be working hard to improve. It would take some unusual circumstances for him to red shirt (like a Josh C getting hurt in October and having the rehab last until May).

Red shirting isn't in our DNA any more than playing a zone defense. It's a Miller thingy.

Matej Svoboda, Czech Republic

Committed to: Dayton

One of just two committed players on this list, Svoboda pledged to coach Archie Miller and Dayton two weeks ago. Scouts and coaches think the Flyers landed an immediate-impact prospect. “He has a lot of international experience,” one coach said. “Can play in any league. He's older as well, physically ready to play.” The 6-foot-7 wing was outstanding at the U20 European Championship, averaging 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range.

Nahziah and Bishop Kearney beat Gates-Chili 94-72 in the Section Five Class AA opening round last night.

He went for 28 points 8 rebounds.

They play Aquinas next at 5 PM on Saturday.

Fr. classes don't get much more interesting than @DaytonMBB's next year with @_ClutchCarter, Antetokounmpo, Svoboda, Wright IV, Pierce, etc.

Also, McKinley Wright was named to the Final 10 in the Minnesota Mr. Basketball... Top 5 and Winner coming later

Also a very balanced class position wise

PG: Wright
SG: Davis
G/F: Carter
F: Svoboda
F: Kostas
Big: Pierce

With the 4 outgoing seniors, that's a lot of playing time opening up. Pierce with the least opportunity probably, but he also needs the most development.

I think that Archie Miller guy just might know what he's doing. Seriously, I believe that this is the most talented class we've had coming in in a very long time. Just hope they can develop like the last few have.

Somebody might want to forward this link to UD and the Atlantic 10 offices. They could see a much higher picture quality broadcast than most of the A10 games in all sports that are internet only broadcasts. Maybe they could learn something from a high school game.

Real Deal

Couldn't resist getting my first glimpse of McKinley Wright (other than highlight tape). Well, so far in the first half he has more material for his highlight tape. Looks like the real deal. Don't have a sense of his defensive ability yet. Offensively he's got good instincts. He's got the hot hand from outside with 4 three-pointers (so far in first half). He can be aggressive and create his own shot, but seems comfortable running the offense. While he made a nice alley top pass to his teammate who's heading to Marquette, he'll make the sound fundamental pass. In other words he doesn't force everything. Interesting that the announcer commented Wright is the likely starting point guard at Dayton next year. Crosby has shown lately that he can still develop into a strong contributor. No doubt we're spoiled with Scoochie, but maybe the Flyers won't cancel next season without him.

The kid is unreal. Not only can he do it all but has great IQ. And this isn't against some scrub team. Delasalle is a very good team. They have 3 D1 players.

Watched some of the game. 46 points, offense including passing extremely impressive, especially on pick and rolls. On-ball defense solid, help defense horrific and despite 10 boards, poor rebounding/boxing-out. He will be yanked quickly by Archie (in practices and early games) due to bad rebounding & bad help defense and my guess is McKinley will be a quick study. He has all the tools to be a great PG. my guess starts the season backing up Crosby due to lack of defensive understanding.

He's recruiting a junior on Delasalle. He's got to be kicking himself for missing out on Wright.

****, that was impressive. A+ handle, excellent court vision and passing, great on the drive and dish as well as finishing. The body control on those drives when he went to in the air to get the angle he needed for the shot was unreal. We're getting a good one.

I think it was De La Salle's Gabe Kalscheur a 2018 Recruit who has an early offer from Minnesota

I disagree. The kid is leaps and bounds ahead of Crosby on basketball IQ and has more tools. He is super quick and rebounds like a maniac. You must have been watching a different game if you don't think he was rebounding the ball.

I watched the last ten minutes, he was impressive. He has a good frame,

I wasn't as worried about his D and rebounding. Part of the time they were playing a 1-3-1 zone so it was hard to tell,

He would have had more assists if players made shots,

NEXT YEAR-

1. Crosby and Wright

2. A much improved DD who will provide good senior leadership and Svoboda

3/4/5- Mikesell, X, Landers (yes he will get PT), Kostas, Cunningham.

I am very optimistic for the future, but really looking forward to a fun March with the winningest group of seniors in Flyer history, who are not done re-writing the UD record book.

He got beat on rebounds a number of times by not locating his guy and boxing-out. Relied too much on altheltic ability on rebounds and not enough on technique -- works in high school but not in college as a smaller guard.

To be clear, really impressive overall. Archie will teach him help defense and proper defensive rebounding. Agree more upside than Crosby, but Archie values defense and Crosby with 2 years in system is light years ahead of Wright with Archie's defensive principles. Hence, my prediction is Crosby starts. According to Archie, Crosby one of the best defensive rebounding guards he has had. Wright could end up starting, but it is hard to figure out Archie's defense in a couple months, his modified pack-line is pretty nuanced even with little things like how to jump out as weak side defender when the player you are guarding receives the ball at the 3 point line. I understand takes a lot of time and reps to figure it out as a 1st year player.

Again, really impressive, but it is a big jump from high school to college. Scoochie did not start playing more minutes than Khari Price until the end of the 2013-2014 season.

Red shirting isn't in our DNA any more than playing a zone defense. It's a Miller thingy.
Don't think I've heard one of his recruits even mention playing time. His playing of freshmen is one heck of a recruiting tool. Telling these kids you're going to develop them from start to finish has to make even the best recruits take a hard look at UD. Thanks, Archie.

I'll add that I believe by the same token that Crosby is your starter next year, with continual exposure for McKinley Wright mixed in.

You forgot Jordan Davis. He will log minutes next year.

McKinley Wright is the reason we HAVE to pull out all the stops to keep Archie. This guy could take us to the next level.
