For the folks who saw the Indiana State game, did the defense look any different in terms of more pressure or aggressiveness compared to last year?

No way. We rarely put on full or half court pressure. We rarely stopped dribble drive, and besides Obi, no help underneath. The D was as bad as some of the worse D games last year.

Tom Archdeacon's Article on Jordy
in today's DDN is very discouraging as it says there is "no timetable" for his return. I interpret this to mean he will not play in Maui as he will not have practiced. This is a blow to the Flyers chances.

Huh? TV announcer said last night that Jordy is practicing, but has not been released to play in a game. Obi says, he will play soon.

Right now I see a core of Rodney, Jalen, Obi and Mikesell.
I'd trade off offense for defense at this point for the 5th starter.

After three games:
Obi is what we all expected, a star.
I'm a bit disappointed in our defense and rebounding so far, but my standards are high for this team because they have potential to be great. I maintain that without Jordy, we are not physical enough to be dominant or hang with top teams in the physical battle. I'm disappointed in the Sissoko redshirt, because I think he is just what we need right now, and even with Jordy back, I want that depth.
I did see improvement in defense and rebounding tonight, at least for a stretch in the first half. I saw good effort there.
Our guard duo of Chatman and Crutcher is pretty awesome offensively. Look at their combined stats.
We make a ton of assists. Our offense is high powered. We are good in transition.
On defense, I just don't think we play with that killer instinct and coordination yet. That might still develop. I'm disappointed that we don't have a bull in the middle, and I feel the absence of Jordy and redshirt of Sissoko hurt us now.

Random thoughts in no particular order:
72% (18/25) on 2FGs tonight. I bet most of those were assisted. 21 assists on the night.
Need to stop jacking threes in the first three minutes. Get in the flow of the game. Open up the perimeter with the inside game.
40 for UNO was a bull in a China shop. But it was Nice to see the guys face somebody with a little beef because they sure will in Maui.
I'm pleased with the development of Ibi and Chase tonight. Both stepped their game up on defense and it's nice to see Ibi shoot from close range and not automatically settle for 3s. Ibi will be a major impact player this year. I think Chase is setting up nicely for next season, picking up minutes this year backing up Obi, Mikesell, and getting ready for a breakout junior year. His 13 minutes tonight seems about right. Maybe a few less when Jordy makes his debut.
The defense was stellar for about 15 of 40 minutes, decent for 15 more, and questionable the rest. I can't assign credit or blame to any specific lineup without watching the replay. The press, when (rarely) used, was especially effective. It's nice to know it's there for a tight game situation. I'd really like to see it used more. In combination with Dayton's ridiculous transition game? That's exciting.
This was a nice step in the schedule progression. ISU and UNO are similar quality teams with an edge to ISU. CSU is terribad though. Georgia on Monday has enough to beat UD on sheer talent alone. I like UD's chances against an inexperienced young team though; I'm guessing a 5 point spread with a ~65% chance to win. If they win and face MSU, it's really a win-win scenario. If you beat MSU, it can make your season. If you lose, well, you weren't supposed to win anyway, but you'll be stronger down the road, especially if you don't get blown out. Gotta get that SEC scalp first though. That would be a resume enhancer because Georgia should get better as the season progresses. I'm pretty ****ed off that I made a work commitment for that day thinking the first game would be Wednesday. I'll have ESPN+ on my phone with ear buds in though.
I truly think these guys are more proud of assists they make than of shots they make. Every single one of them. I wish they'd take similar pride in the defensive stops too (and we saw signs of that tonight). The crowd certainly recognized them when they happened.
I don't know what it is, but something tells me that Trey Landers is on course for a monster offensive breakout similar to Devin Oliver in his senior year, about ten games into that season. He's doing everything else like Oliver did. I'm thinking 10ppg, 35%+ 3FG, along with everything else he already does.
I like this starting lineup and I want it to stay intact for at least the first ten games. It's not necessarily the best five down the road, but it has the best chemistry.
Chatman is a better version of Jordan Davis. Better shot, better handle, roughly equal defense. I do hope Davis crushes it at MTSU though.

Agree with Fudd and Sheg. Not sure what to make of the Jordy situation. Typically if there's no intention of playing time a kid doesn't dress. And if he's not going to see the court in a blowout why did he dress, to see if he could go through the layup line? Noticed the kinesiology tape over his left knee, but no sleeve or brace. As Fudd alluded to, not having Jordy forces Chase to play the backup 5, which isn't his slot if we are 100% healthy.

I fully expected us to take advantage of our athleticism & depth and press teams ... a lot.
We've been picking up full-court, but a man-to-man press is easy to break if you have a good ball handler as you just send everyone else down the floor.
It dawned on me last night that maybe, just maybe, CAG has been holding back a swarming press for the Bulldogs in Maui.

Have to believe Grant weighed getting Jordy some game experience vs possibly reinjuring the knee against an inferior opponent and easy win. Then there was the big guy on Omaha, who could have hurt him. Grant is playing the long term for this year and next year. Does he play against Georgia? Who knows, but Grant, and another week rest will do Jordy good.
And yes, rebounding is a great concern.

What I'm reading is that, prior to yesterday, Jordy has only participated in non-contact practice drills. i assume that means that he is doing some kind of cardio while the rest of the team is running the floor. Needs to do whatever he can to stay close to game shape.
I liked what I saw from Ibi. He needs to attack the rim. We need that guy who can penetrate and disrupt.
Although late in the game, I also like what Cohill did with the ball in his hands. Handles pressure and penetrated.
Hopefully last night was a confidence boost for Matos. If he can lock down on D, rebound, and give us 5-6 points a game in 10-15 minutes, it should be a good year.
Outside UD Arena, at least the other A10 teams won, even if Rhode Island and Mason were squeakers. Both URI and GMU trailed most of their games.
Davidson was 12-26 (46.2%) from 3pt land vs Nevada. Very hard to beat when they do that. They shot 35.7% and 31.8% in their losses and 50% and 46.2% in their wins. The scouting report isn't too complicated.

Actually with the red shirt we only have 10 scholarship players, and Jordy could be iffy for a spell. Difference this year is everyone can contribute. a very capable roster

Georgia won a close one 82-78. Only 11 bench points, they were led by their big forward Hammonds with 26 (on 20 shots) and Edwards with 18 (on 15 shots). They took a ton of free throws (31) so expect them to attack the lane early and often. They shot 6-16 (37.5%) from 3.
Obi vs Hammonds will be a prime matchup, and we'll see who they put on Edwards. Trey has the size to not be outmuscled by him, but is he quick enough?

There should be a "group" approach to defending Edwards. Keep a fresh guy on him. Matos is a fit for the role. Landers/Mikesell/Ibi - just keep a fresh guy on him.

I like the rotation of Landers, Matos, and Watson on Edwards. At 6’5” and 225, he may be too quick for Mikesell, and probably too strong for Cohill. But yeah, the “kitchen sink” approach is probably not a bad idea.

Archdeacon on Jordy. Highly recommend, also the one on Chase that is linked in this article.
I met and talked to Jordy and Moulaye this fall at a soccer match. A couple of weeks later, saw them again and they came over to speak to me. There are a a lot of great young people in this world and Dayton has more than our share.

Agree that a couple players took a step back today. And some have been inconsistent (at best). But it's too early to panic - particularly considering this is the first full year for some of these guys. Our depth will cover for a player or two having a sub-par performance in most (if not all) of our remaining regular season games. Many teams have success with only 7 or 8 players getting the bulk of the minutes. If we have a guy (or two) off the bench not playing well we can afford to shorten the rotation.
But I agree that if we want a high seed and deep tournament run, we will need to see improvement throughout the year.
As far as Matos - did he even play today? If not - do we know why not?

What almost cost us was taking the foot off the gas and not being able to get going again. We did not play with nearly the energy in the second half that we did in the first half. It was like they were content with the lead and just wanted to play not to lose the rest of the way. We can't do that against good teams like SMC. Good thing we were up as much as we were.

In the Royal mind, Chimichanga isn't a bench player...he's a mop-up player...a really, really big mop-up player. That's why I didn't include him.
As for looking 'lost half the time'...that implies he's not lost the other half. 'most the time' is a better assessment.

Looking back at his stats his freshman and sophomore years at Nebraska, he had a couple decent games, 13 minutes per game with 4 points and 5 rebounds per. I keep thinking with his couple years he has had to develop, once healthy (soon or not?) he will royally prove you wrong about being only a mop up player and be able to provide us with a solid 15 minutes per game as a key sub. It is still early December, still time

Any decent games against decent competition?? He had a great game against Houston Baptist, but I'm sure a practice would be decent-er.

From Arch's column:
Jordy Tshimanga played 62 games for Nebraska, started 27 of them and had stellar performances against some of the Cornhuskers’ best opponents: 15 points versus Michigan State, 10 points and eight rebounds against then No. 3 Kansas, 10 rebounds against No 7 Wisconsin.

2016-17 was a long time ago... . As a freshman his numbers were promising...then came his sophomore year (2 pts vs MSU).
What has happened to his knees since then?? Find those knees and he's back on my rotation/depth.

I'm not so sure that Jordy has stabilized from his injury return yet. Maybe he has, but it will take a few more games for me to understand where he is.
To me, he is the missing piece to us being capable of being a top 10 team. Our offense is tremendous, but we have some weakness in the defensive post and in defensive rebounding against the top teams with very good big men. Jordy has the potential to sure up that one weakness, IMO.
He can look lost out there, but that could be lack of practice and game time at this point. He fumbled the ball a few times against Saint Mary's, and racked up fouls against Kansas quickly playing defense with his hands. But he changes the game for us in terms of defensive rebounding and changes our overall physicality on defense as well.

Jordy
needs to strengthen his hands as he muffed 3 would be assists by failing to catch the basketball near the basket. I hope it's just rust and not weak hands.

Your right, but at least 2 of the passes were mighty sloppy and not an easy catch, thus the reason shows only 1 TO in box score for Jordy.
Sloppy passing into the post and knowing the court is only 50' wide are the two biggest things we need to work on.

^ I've never played basketball on a Collegiate or NBA court. When the announcer mentioned that the extended NBA 3 point line was messing with UD's spacing and causing them to be too close to the out of bounds line, was that complete BS or a legit explanation?

I took it as BS. Where they are stepping out shouldnt be a factor of the NBA line

I have heard announcers say this in 3 or 4 games this year. I call BS. Isn't the NBA and NCAA mens three point lines both the same 22' and change in the corners where we keep having this issue?

This has been happening more all year, Mikesell has done it a few times. If this diagram is accurate, I think it's more to do with the college line change that happened this year.

Assuming we’re on offense an equal amount of time as defense, a good argument could be made that Chase is lost half the time too. But it’s obvious that he has the athleticism to play defense so I have all the faith in the Palatial Estate that Grant will find a way to teach and motivate him accordingly.

Both Jordy and Dwayne were deer in headlights yesterday. That probably is a result of being nervous and lack of confidence. Since we have seen Cohill function just fine on offense, we know he can do it. Jordy did just fine catching the ball and playing D against a lesser team last game.
To write off either one this early would be liking saying Landers cannot shoot threes. Confidence, confidence, confidence.

Who’s writing them off? Not thee!
Chimichanga has to find his healthy knees and Johnson seed to prioritize defense.

It's BS. The total width of the court is unchanged. It's simply awareness, nothing more.

I will interrupt yer bickering here for some Obi Toppin love. Listening to a couple of BBall hoop podcasts. Lots of them have mentioned Dayton and Obi.
Here is 247 sports with scout Jerry Meyer. At the 17:30 mark they talk about Obi for about 5 minutes.

Thread got pushed down, so I'll add to it as there is potential for a lot of national press this week.
http://hoopshd.com/
Jan 12th hoops report has a lot of UD/A10 talk, about the 45 min mark (give or take, can't remember exactly) highlighting the Arch-Baron Cup as the A10 game of the week.

Richmond's leading scorer Blake Francis is out 4-6 weeks. Took a shot in their game vs St Louis and cracked his sternum.

tough break (no pun intended) for a team that has had a resurgence this year.

That stinks. For both Richmond and the A10, not to mention the player. Hopefully they can keep it together to 1) remain in contention for an at-large and 2) remain strong in the NET for the A10 Quad opportunities.

Love the highlighting of the ABC in their game day/notes section.
They also have UD at a 3 in their latest bracket mockup, not much UD discussion though, talked about the other 3 seeds mostly before moving on to the 4 seed discussion. Still always interesting to here their bracket discussion.

Nice little article headlined on an NCAA site. I was struck by the inaccuracy of references to last night's game with the Bonnies - "one of 23 assists on the night" and "a final of 81-57". Doesn't change the complexion of the article, just surprising. I had to double check the date and make sure they were talking about the same game.
Either way, great read.

I had the half-time score as 47-29. His reference to more than 11K was that it was the 328th consecutive game at that attendance or better.

Nice to hear Bucky is on the mend.
I guess I didn’t realize Larry Hansgen is in his 37th year. Yes, Bucky is “The Legend” but at what point do we call Larry “The Legend” too? He is deserving.
With most games on TV these days and attending the home games I rarely get a chance to listen to either anymore but I sure love hearing Larry’s calls of highlights.

When I’m watching at home I stream WHIO on iHeartRadio and they are usually a minute behind the game. I pause the game to get them in sync and I get the best of both worlds

Only way to watch a UD game for me, gotta listen to Larry and company.
It takes a little finagling to get the hang of syncing them up but once you to do it's pretty easy.

Or you can go straight to the source, the WHIO Radio live feed:
https://www.whio.com/
Click on the "Live Radio" box in the upper right corner and that will open a separate player. Easy to start, stop and pause to sync with the TV feed.

This is the opening paragraph in Dayton's section: "The seventh-ranked Flyers haven’t been ranked this high since 1968. That was also the last time they had an All-American. It’s not a coincidence this team can boast both a high ranking and such a player."
Wasn't Jim Paxson an All American?
