SLU II Thread

Glad we have one match this week - but it will be a big one on the road at SLU. Here is the bottom-line -- if SLU wins it makes their season. So they will be gunning for an upset and if we don't bring it they can beat us. They have the talent -- to be honest, they have more "top" talent than we have when you look at the last 3 recruiting classes. So we have to play well to beat them.

And we have to play well in continuing to get ready to win the A-10 Tourney. It's a big match on Saturday.

In a weird sense, I think it would be good for the Flyers to lose to the Billikens this weekend. I know, you're saying, 'What?!?!?!'. Here me out...

Since we lost to George Washington, we have won 7 straight games. If we want to get into the NCAAs, our only shot is the A10 Tournament. If we beat the Billikens, and then win the A10, that will be 12 straight wins going in. Granted, in the NCAAs we will be a 12 seed or so (if not lower), so the chance of winning that game is probably close to nil. (Regionals on home courts, volleyball is power at the top more so than basketball, etc) (We also have the Ohio game on Thanksgiving Friday which will be tough.)

But, if we lose to the Billikens, we can get a "breather" from the winning streak, start a nice small one, get a foothold on what we need to do to win out, and get to the NCAAs.

But, as they say in the Football game threads, "Go Dayton Flyers!"

Never believed in the "let's lose one" to gain something ..... "Let's be the underdog", "fly under the radar" stuff.

I know in some pro sports, teams do that so they 'get the #1 pick', they rest their best players for the championship rounds etc. But generally you need to, you should want to win every game you play.

The great teams, the best teams didn't get to be great and the best by laying down 'every once and awhile' ....

You are an underdog for a reason, you are under the radar for a reason and typically those are teams that should be attempting to be great or the best. If you are always an underdog what does that say about your team? An underdog, under the radar are usually labels that someone else says about you ..... you don't need to self label.

In most every game across most every venue (except in the pro's) you strive to win each game and just play it out and go from there!

So Go Flyers Win 'em ALL!

FYI - in vball - they only seed the top 16 teams. Everyone else is then re-arranged. Usually by location to limit travel expense, but not always. (Every year there are a handful of teams sent traveling.) And they also look at RPIs. This year that COULD help Dayton. We have seen that in the past. A first round match up that certainly was considered an upset -- but winnable all the same. We have also seen the opposite of that -- especially in the 2nd round. Where we've come close, very close, to making the 2nd weekend but up against a ranked team all the same and came up a couple points short.

This year we just need to get back and I think that means we need to beat SLU this weekend as we progress to being the best team in the A-10 so come tournament time, we dominate whoever we end up playing.

And, finally, I want to finish the year with an RPI better than 100. That helps recruiting (although this staff is doing very well on it's own!) Still, we need to get back to picking up 1 (or 2) Top 100 recruits every year -- and winning out will sure help that for the 2017 class. And I'd like to point out, this coaching staff in less than a year has our recruiting back on track time-wise. The good teams around the country are working on the 2017 and 2018 freshmen classes. We were behind 5 of the 6 Sheffield years. It's a very good thing we are back on track. You have to be to land a Top 100 recruit.

Go Flyers!

I'm sure that the team wants to be the first to reach the sweet sixteen. But, considering the coaching change and what last year's team accomplished making the ncaa tournament would be a successful year in my opinion. Anything beyond that would be gravy.

Great win. You don't win many sets hitting .143 as the team did in set #2. After that they dominated!

I would never hope the team lost a match but I think it is good that they lost set #1 and then elevated their play. They know that they have to play well to beat SLU in the future.

Gut check! Way to hang in there on the road against a big league rival and persevere.

Career High for Isolde Hannan with 3 solo blocks. Nice job!

Alaina Turner's season is currently 9th all time for attempts in a season.
Janna Krafka's season is now 11th all time for digs in a season.

Ladies were throughly challenged with a do or die SLU team seriously needing a win. After half the ladies seemed to be in total control with a new burst of energy and a purpose.

While it is always great to be able to watch the flyers games on the net it doesn't compare to seeing the game live and able to sit among the flyer families who travel religiously to watch their young daughters play. What one comes away with is a real feeling of family as they watch the match with some friendly banter as a flyer either gets a kill, serves an ace, gets a block or gets bested by an opponent. One thing is for sure the ladies know there families are there to support them and winning makes it that even more enjoyable.

We've always known Dayton to recruit high caliber and character players but meeting their families it becomes clear where they get these values from. It all starts in the home where they learn those values and what a joy it must be for the parents to not only watch them mature while under their watch all the way through HS but to then let them leave the nest and continue to hold true to those values.

Speaking with a few parents they confirmed that while the U is very important in choosing a scholarship it is the coach that ultimately seals the deal, after all it is the coaches who will continue to be the parent away from home.

Not only did I learn a lot about the recruiting process from a few parents view but where else can you go to a vball match and get the inside info on how to get healthy but remain healthy. No surprise here, it all starts with what we put in our systems.

While nothing is ever guaranteed, I believe it is safe to say the flyers will end as the A-10 regular season champs. While most will agree the non con season was not as challenging as in years past the same cannot be said for the A-10. Several strong teams in the A-10 and except for that 5 set match loss to GW, Dayton has handled them all fairly well.

LaSalle and Davidson up next then the A-10 Championships at the Frericks Center. As the womens soccer team did today, lets take the A-10 tournement championship and auto bid to the NCAA. Go Flyers!
