Shake it off and Rest up for the Real Tournament

Would have been nice to win the A 10 tourney, but honestly, make a run in the Big Dance and no one will remember or care about the A 10 tourney. Hats off to Davidson as they just wanted it/needed it more today.

Now we get a week to rest up and prepare. Plenty of basketball to be played. Next week Dayton needs to be the team that wants it more.

It's March baby. Go Flyers!

Davidson might have wanted more today, but "needed", doubt it. There is no way they are going to win 4 games in 4 days, that's the only way they "needed it". They Flyers needed it to feel safe on Sunday. While I think it's they're probably still in the dance, I'm not ready to tell anybody it's a given.

Either resting or celebrating, hard to tell.

Well if they were still celebrating after 3/4, I don't feel all warm and fuzzy about giving them a pass for it.

Agreed. Winning the league is a great accomplishment, but losing three in a row after that to close the season would make it a total moot point.

2 of those 3 are already done. Hope they learned something.

Yep, they have one more chance to redeem, and that's it. Scoochie, Kendall, Kyle, Charles...this is it. No more mulligans. Win or go home for good...

The winningest class in UD history will lose their last 3 games.
But if that keeps Archie here 1 more year it is worth it.

Angry UD

was out shot by Davidson
out-defended by Davidson
out hustled by Davidson
out thought by Davidson

The senior class with the most wins in school history history only had the advantage in one area. They led in publicity.

We better hope Mich game uniforms make it to the tourney site. If they wear their practice uniforms again trouble will be among us.

I'm not drinking ANY Kool-Aid, just reporting what ESPN is saying. My personal feeling is that they are in the NIT; and if they are in the NIT, I won't be watching...

We have 13 top 100 wins. Stack that up against any other team you can think of on the bubble. Hard to find any that have even half that. We are fine.

Agree. Incidentally, i'm just reporting what ESPN is saying, I didn't see I agree with it. But if it's accurate AND if UD happens to win, they'd be facing North Carolina in round 2...I don't even want to think about that.

Keeping Archie here one more year won't do much, keeping here 3 more years at least is what I want because of what looks like a great recruiting class next season

Hopefully we drop to a 10/11, otherwise this postseason is going to be garbage following what was a great regular season.

Not to mention the "eye test" if anyone from the Selection Committee was watching that game today. Pretty clear to me that Jack Gibbs is a super-star who just went off in the closing minute to win that game. 13 top 100 wins is plenty with this terrible bubble group to choose from. My only concern now is being in the play-in game again, although many have been saying that they won't do that anymore because of UD Arena being the site...

I said it in another thread, but it's more appropriate here.

I don't feel as safe as many of you seem to be. I think we are probably in, but I'm not 100% on that.

We are still one of the little guys in the eyes of the committee. As a little guy our job is to take away any excuse to leave us out. Make sure they don't have a 30 second speech to give to ESPN about the hole in our resume.

In the last 7 days we gave them a reason to leave us out.

Do I think we are in? I do. But there is a lot of basketball to be played and a lot of bids to be stolen still. I am not feeling super comfortable right now. I'm predicting a 10 or 11...and that's enough to sweat it out.

Well, I got news for you the NCAA tournament is a virtual cornucopia of superstars, so if we couldn't handle Jack freakin' Gibbs, I doubt we're going to fare much better in THE SHOW.

The top of his predictions says updated at 7:40am this morning. Same with ESPN showing us at an 8. They will wait until the end of the day and make adjustments.

Very few scorers like Gibbs in the NCAA. Not going to admonish UD's defense but there ain't many scorers like him..

This is the kind of support and reaction that brings me back to 2008. The cozy confindes of the NIT tournament and excitement of another post-season home game. Yeah!

We shat the bed and I'm concerned about a repeat of last year's azz kicking from Syracuse in the first round.

If the NCAA leaves Dayton out this year, I don't think they'll find the usual nice reception at the First Four. In fact, it could be a very uncomfortable and disgruntled First Four experience in Dayton, Ohio to start the tournament.

It's March baby. Go Flyers!
That doesn't make UD look good, if the "other team" wanted it more.

We already rested up from last Saturday ... alot that did for us. You think the 'next team' we play is gonna be any different than Davidson? Most likely much better.

So far the data coming in suggests the team has not yet learned much. Too sad.

For a long time it seems like our Flyers perform better as underdogs than favorites. Hopefully that will work to our advantage in the NCAA tournament.

Two losses going into the tournament. Not good no matter what spin is put on it.

Does anyone know how many games we have had first half double digit deficits in this year? I think all of the losses except possibly VCU and I think there are at least a handful of our wins where it happened as well.

First Davidson game I think we were down a lot both in the first half and the 2nd. Were down 11 in the 2nd Rhody game.

We are in. We are a 100% lock. No way we are out.

I will guess that we are a 7 seed.

These conference tournaments are tough. A lot of the teams are fighting for their lives. Nobody wants their season to end. Upsets happen all the time.

Rest up and get ready for the NCAAT.

My thoughts exactly. 80 minutes of court time since then, and nowhere near 40 minutes of good basketball in those 2 games combined. That won't feed the bulldog next week, assuming we're still Dancing.

IMHO, you're too optimistic, Dog. The Committee just loves to wait for a mid-major (yes, I said it) to falter, so they can justify dropping them a seed line or 3.

My guess is we'll be either a 9 seed or a 10. I'm thinking we'll be a 9, just so our 2nd game (if there is such a thing) will be against a #1. They'll want to separate the "contenders" from the "pretenders", and right now, you'd have a hard time convincing me that we're in the former category.

Yes, because I doubt very seriously that we'll be the higher seed in any game we play from now through the rest of the season.

Interesting thought. Perhaps this teams needs a good dose of DMO's (or Sibert's) humble-but-determined leadership and attitude.

I tend to agree with you. There is no leader now. At times, Scoochie is a leader, but at other times he disappears as a leader.

Bullc**p
Field goal percent was a wash
Dayton scored more baskets
Dayton had more assists
Dayton shot a better % from three
Dayton had more steals
Dayton had fewer turnovers
Dayton lost the rebound battle, was out-blocked, and - most importantly - lost the free-throw battle
That is all

Agree Jeff. Anything can happen but confidence level that the Flyers will put together 40 minutes of good to great basketball isn't high. May be another one and done.

I had a nice long post ready to go and then lost it for some reason...page refreshed or something. Ha. So here is the shorter version:

Too much emphasis on the last two games. Dayton won 9 in a row prior to that. We rarely win @ GW anyway, and top it off with their Senior Night and Dayton coming off the big VCU win just a few days prior.

Davidson loss...upsets happen in conference tournaments. Kansas got bounced in their first game by TCU. Dayton probably got a little too comfortable with their "lock" status and they ran into a buzzsaw named Jack Gibbs.

Now their backs are against the wall again, as Archie said. Dayton could very well get bounced in the first round of the NCAA tournament (where every match up will be tough), but I think it has little to do with the last two games. Reading some of the posts, you would think we've lost 5 in a row at home to Fordham and Duquesne! Ha

I tried to find the numbers but was unsuccessful.

Does anyone have the history of talking head predictions and actual seeding (or not seeding)?

It goes without saying...but...just saying...the best predictor of future performance is past performance.

My crappy memory tells me that last year is the only one I can recall where we were seeded per the average "professional" picker. We were a shoe-in in the NIT win season and were not even an afterthought by "The Smug and Prejudicial Picker Committee."

Success in the NCAA

Success requires three things: Being a very good team; being a bit lucky; and playing your best BB in late March. Going in to the Dance having lost the last two surely is evidence that we're not playing well. "Rest" is not the cure for that. I don't know what is. But I do not see us winning a game....hope I'm dead wrong. This is a job for the coach to fix.

Archie admitted that his team was "mentally fatigued" after the GW loss, so I'm sure he would have appreciated a few more days rest/preparation. Toss out that game and Dayton has won 9 of its last 10 games and 17 of its last 20.

Observations from the A-10T

We had all-session tix, and took in each of the games. Just had a houseful of out of town guests leave and am waiting for the selection show. For those of you not able to be at PPG Paint stadium here are just one man’s observations:

 The award for tournament buzz kill belongs squarely to our Flyers. This T was ours for the taking….

 UD owned the place in our game. It was a home game- how our seniors could sleep walk through that enthusiastic UD crowd cheering them on is unimaginable to me. But to their credit they saw Davidson’s very best game and had a chance to win. Davidson cannot play better….
 You had to see Gibb’s gutty performance to believe it. He beat us by himself. As expected, they had nothing left for Rhodey. It was embarrassing to watch a team that beat us look so awful.

 VCU had an incredibly favorable path thru the field (no criticism to them). They were so much larger and more athletic than Richmond they should have won by 20. The fact that Richmond gave away a late lead and could not score on their last possession in regulation gave it to VCU. Every person in the stadium could see VCU was going to roll over them in OT.

Rhode Island peaked at the right time- they were physical and clearly the match of VCU. They were the first real physical test for VCU.

 VCU under achieves. Their lucky to be where they are. It’s almost annoying to see up close their talent and physical skills and watch them struggle too often to beat clearly inferior teams.

 The most annoying fans remain VCU’s. Everything about VCU’s fan base is big, bold, brash, and loud. We sat in the 1st row center court, the 2 rows behind us were loud obnoxious VCU fans. They *****ed about EVERY SINGLE CALL EVERY SINGLE TIME. The press corp who sat in front of us were clearly also tired of the whining.

 We need VCU in the league, they are almost my _avier replacement. Did I mention how annoying their fans are?

 The mvp of the tournament was the VCU Gold Rush Dance Team.

I see the selection show is about to start- I think it will be a great day to be a Flyer!

Mental fatigue?

These are kids! It's a long season and all teams are tired. The Flyers have a week to "rest" and recover from their mental fatigue. Let's go!!!!

On another note....our 4th consecutive NCAA appearance....a great achievement that just a few years ago would have seemed unimaginable.

Go Flyers!

I will guess that we are a 7 seed.

You were saying?...lol.
