Brutal Truth
The brutal truth is that Pierre squandered his senior night. It sucks that he'll never get that back, but hopefully he's more than a shadow of himself moving forward. If he plays like tonight, this team won't advance in the A10 or NCAA tournament. This may seem harsh. I get that. But, if you're honest, you have to agree.

If squandering your Senior night means winning the A10 reg season championship, I agree.

He sucked. One of the few times he wasn't great . Happens to everyone. A great, great Flyer. Concludes his regular season as champion and number one seed. He gave his all.

Let's celebrate the win and the season. There'll be time to be critical later.
Congrats to Pierre on one hell of a college career. And to Wherli on being the come back kid on this team. Neither we, nor he will soon forget his amazing contributions last season.

It's a great result, but we have to be better moving forward. To be better, Pierre has to play significantly better.

Tough game scoring for DP but he did the other things needed to win. He went into the crowd after the game and it didn't look like he was upset about his contributions. He'll be there for the A10 and NCAAT.

Who cares? Seemed like DP missed some close shots that could fall another night, not easy shots but close to the rack. KP did, too. I'll have to look at the shot chart to see if it supports several close misses. but it seemed like we had some that fall other times. Can't remember if blocked shots show up as misses or not, because I think VCU had 7.

Archie should have started BW and played him for 1 minute...it couldn't have been any worse of a start with him in there.

Did not understand why Bobby was not put in the game. With all the foul trouble, giving him a few minutes made sense. At the end Archie went with Williams over Bobby. Bobby has been bad lately, but so has Williams.

Bad timing for your post. DP's shot's did not fall, he was nervous and got a couple of tough calls, had 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Without his contributions tonight, UD finishes in 4th.
Sounds like a pretty good senior night to me.

Did anyone notice????
DP fouled out with four minutes left in regulation & KP fouled out early in overtime, yet we still won.
To me, that bodes well for the future.

Wow.... as part of the Flyer Faithful and season ticketholder I was at the game early tonight and this is what I saw and will remember from Dyshawn's Sr night; 1) an arena buzz like no other; 2) a rousing rendition of O'Canada and National Anthem; 3) two likable SR players embraced by the fans, their coach and teammates; 4) a kid (DP) who played his a** off for his team (despite his own off night); 5) a memorable two handed sweeping dunk on a putback rebound; 6) a team that rallied around each other and never folded; 7) a co-A10 championship and #1 seed; 8) and finally pure jubilation at the end as the players went into the stands and then cut down the arena nets in front of the home crowd. Squandered hardly and no I don't agree.

Let's face it: with the way his season started personally, and the way it had been ending from a team standpoint (prior to this week), and the conference title on the line, on Senior Night, with his family in attendance, and a sellout crowd in the house...he might have been feeling just a bit of pressure. Still, if he had to pick a moment for a "step-up" play, that tip-dunk was the right play at the right time.
Thanks, Dyshawn. Kill it in Brooklyn, dude!

I didn't realize that Senior night meant that an easy game would be handed to all seniors. I didn't realize that VCU was instructed to allow Pierre to shine and get out of his way when he had the ball and to hand it to him while he was on defense.
Because for him to have squandered anything, that's what would have had to have taken place.
How about this, let's make senior night a way for the home fans to show their appreciation for what the seniors have given them overall in games that took place before this nights game? And if the fans feel good about it and the seniors feel good about it, then DP and BW had a very successful senior night.

UD ruined senior night for Richmond on Tuesday. Just saying.
Pierre played hard on defense and on the boards. Some of his shots did not fall. Partially due to a very good shot blocker. Shooting is not the ONLY stat to determine a player's game contribution.

Pierre had 3-4 really good looks that just rimmed out. Most on his patented spin move and hook shot. They were good high percentage shots. Could have just as easily lipped in as they lipped out. We'll take those looks every night and twice on Sunday. Sometimes the iron is unkind. But, we dont win without him on the court. We lose without that tip dunk. We were out of offensive mulligans given the game clock.
The guy we gotta get out of the stupor is Darrell. The kid needs a hug. Its all between the ears. Talent is there. Just let it happen. Dont force it.

This is dumb. Vegas had it as a one game and it lived up to its hype. Team wins, moves on and that is all it counts. Watch Pierre this week and with all the UD fans in Brooklyn, he will think he is back in the Dayton Arena.
And by the way, Ali Baba or whatever his name is played like a terror and the best game I have ever seen him play. He crunched us on defense, blocked our shots and did not foul out. Pierre had to deal with him all night long and played him as good as you possibly can. So Pierre fouled out - it was not because he was standing around. He was battling that big guy all night long.
Congratulations to Pierre and team.

Squander: to waste something in a reckless or foolish manner.
That word just doesn't mean what you think it means.
He had a below average night, it happened to be senior night. Cooke went 4-13 with 2 rebounds and 3 TO's, he didn't "squander" anything he just had a bad night. The other team has something to do with that.

The Rams' defense was relentless in the paint. Everyone had a tough time scoring down there. But when we needed it, Dyshawn was there with the tip-dunk, and it may have been the most important basket of his career. How can you call that a bad night?

After the game, I went up to the Time Warner Flight Deck. What I witnessed was totally neat. Long after the game, Dyshawn and his family were the last to leave the court. You could see that Dyshawn was down there soaking in the championship and four years worth of memories. Totally neat seeing that. What a class act. Thanks for the memories, Dyshawn and Bobby.

Dyshawn is also the guy that has double doubles in 4 of his last 6 games. He struggled TONIGHT but is still on a tear especially in terms of rebounding the ball. I think he may be averaging 11 boards a game over the last few weeks.
VCU was so focused on Dyshawn today that it opened up the court for others to make plays and that is exactly what happened. This team we saw for the first 24 games of the season is back.
We showed toughness, we showed heart, and we showed togetherness and true team all night long. I love this team.

VCU is the one who was lucky. If we make our shots and Pierre and DD have a better game, they lose by 15. We are no doubt the better team, which I wondered before last night.

And the award for worst thread of the year goes to...drum roll please...
Yikes! He didn't have a great game that's for sure but I reckon he was pretty happy afterward in the locker room. Also that dunk was huge and came at a pivotal point.

Agree about Daryl, although not sure about going the hug route. I think Archie's tried that. He's played in too many big games yet continues with the schoolyard crap like the nonchalant pass that was stolen at mid court, then having the audacity to gesture to Crosby (I think) as if he (Crosby) should've come to meet the pass. But if hugs make you more mature, I'm all for it, because that's what DD and Sam Miller both lack right now.

The Flyers won. Obviously, that's awesome. We beat a top 50 RPI team that's on the bubble on our home court. The responses are typical and what I anticipated. As to Pierre's play, Rollo may have summarized it best in his thread. Many here like to complain about the trophy generation, yet your unable to be blunt and honest about a player's performance...at least certain players. Whatever. I chuckled as I read the responses this morning. Now, you can get back to hyperbole. Enjoy.

Even though he had an off night his rebound dunk with around 1:30 left in the game was hugh as it made it only a point game vs.vcu having the ball with a 3 point lead

Well I get the premise, and half of what you're saying, but Kendall is only a junior. He will be a monster next season!
As for Pierre, I think he will make you forget that game with five gems in a row. I'm making the excuse that it was an emotional night, but I would assume the last year or so has been a fairly tumultuous time in his young life. He got that out of the way last night in my estimation. I predict that Dyshawn has a great finish to his college career.
Looks like Scoochie will have to supply more scoring since Kendall's injury is lingering. As long as Kyle continues to shoot well defenses have to account for him because he's such a big part of this team's success. His ball action really helps get Scooch shooting room. And vice-versa. And it's worked out. Especially with the fall off of DD and the spotty shooting from Cooke on occasion.
I'll go ahead and take credit now for correctly predicting that Kyle would become a good shooter. Afterall he's been my favorite current Flyer and has been since he was a frosh..
At the same time I will confess that around twenty games back I said that his minutes might be reduced because of the 'trees growing up around him.' I should've known better. He'll go down as one of the all-time favorites here.
I have said for three weeks that Cooke needs to drive more. Especially when he goes cold from outside. I mean? He can't just disappear now with Pollard wearing down late in games. He's no Sibert from outside, but Charles can leave his man better than Jordan could off the dribble and finish at the goal because of his size.
Anyways I think of all the qualifiers on the team, Pierre shakes out as team MVP after all this has played out. Just hope he doesn't shake out of his shorts. I would take a curtain call if he could get us to another E8. Heck he could go cheeks out for a Final Four
In another fashion I think he is poised to bust out in the tourneys. We all know that. Go Flyers!

To me, the clear game plan is to stop DP and CC. VCU is an athletic, skilled defensive team, and they were able to minimize and contest DPs bread and butter looks last night. CC is at his best when he can get his defender back on his heels because of his quick first step to the rim. Then lo and behold he drains some threes. Not so much last night, but I yearn for the days when we were really sharing the ball like the Spurs. But, when individual players' games are "off", we still find a player to make a play.

VCU defense was pretty unreal at times. Mostly Mo Alie, but others too.
Moptop orange hair was pretty amazing under the boards.
Just saw Espn Stats now - has MO Alie Cox at 4 Blocks. Yeah right, that was on Scoochie alone. Guy had at least 7 blocks I saw. Great timing and presence that young man, give him plenty of credit.
Correct in the game plan Flyerfever - stop DP and Cookie Monster. If i'm an opponent, i switch that to try to stop SS, but not sure thats possible. Trap him to tire him out then.
Stopping DP or Cooke is also key . Don't think you can limit or stop both going forward. Both are beasts, in different ways.
Congrats to Mr Canada DP and to Bobby. I hope Bobby gets to play once or twice more

Dayton Flyers
just beat one of the three best defensive teams in the Atlantic 10 to claim a share of the regular season title. As with any sport a good defensive team takes away the opponent's strongest offensive weapon. For most of the A-10 competition Pierre has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Flyer offense. Additionally he scores and rebounds. Late in the season he has been double teamed and the opponent "D's" have been set to take him out of the game. The strategy has worked. Fortunately, Scooch has performed at his highest level of his career to drive Dayton to wins in the last two games. You can bet that in the A-10 tourney Scoochie will be harnessed and it will be up to others to lead the team in scoring. That is just the way competition works at all levels of sports. Archie Miller and Kyle Davis have been taking away UD's opponent's strongest "go to" weapon for years. As fans we need to think more about what the opponent may do to the Flyers based upon the last effort UD put on TV.
It gives added insight to the opponent's game plan.
I believe Pierre, Cooke, Darrell Davis and even Big Steve may have great efforts in the next game. Scoochie has already earned his Flyer POY credentials in Orlando and in the final week of the A-10 regular season.

Winning last night is arguably one of the biggest moments for the program since we joined the A10. We won the regular season championship for the first frikin time Eva!!! If we can't suppress the criticism and enjoy the win, nothing is ever going to be good enough.
It's one thing to be critical in the game thread, and many of us were, and say something like this in the heat of the moment. Its a whole other thing to start a new thread to criticize a kid on his last home game, especially after he played his heart out against a worthy opponent and we wound up on top. Whether you agree with the premise of the post or not, starting this thread to make those statements showed very poor timing and poor judgement.

I'm glad you've stepped up as the decorum officer, FF. I invite you to reread my post. I stand by my statements. For this team to make a run, Pierre has to play better. He's capable of far more. This team is capable of making some noise if he plays to his potential. Last night, he did not. There certainly could be reasons for his performance. He could have been too pumped up. He could have been affected by the emotion of the night. Regardless, he'll need to harnass it and find away to perform at the level he's shown repeatedly through his career. My statement was about one game. It was not about the final score (in fact, it was posted before the end of regulation). Let the reactions flow. That's fine. But, don't pretend that we're now required to observe a 24 hour rule before posting anything that's not Polly Positive. And, don't pretend that comments are somehow allowable if buried in another thread. That's silly.

I should be tarred and feathered. After I closed my laptop and went to bed about 4am I thought "I think I effed up Darrell's name and confused him with Daryl Hall. I should probably get out of bed, turn my laptop on, log back in, fix it, log off, turn my laptop off, and go back to bed where my sheets are now cold again." But....I was too beat. I was hoping I could get up Sunday, fix it, and nobody would notice. But no way. Not with this crowd. But I like that.
Bush league move on my part though. I used to do this a lot with Abril Carbajal from the WSOC team. I called her April so many times I'm surprised she didn't kick me in the nuts on the sideline. Rollo would have approved.

Blame Steve for not getting into foul trouble...
Archie was trying to win the game. Wehrli vs. Alie Cox = disaster waiting to happen. I love Bobby, but Archie played the team that he thought would win the game. And guess what? He was right.
Wehrli has had an awesome "rags to riches" story line for 2 seasons. One game doesn't change that. Had we been playing Saint Louis instead, he would have gotten his minutes. And with Pollard likely missing the A-10 tourney, he'll get plenty of chances to shine this week.
Don't cry for Bobby Wehrli, I guarantee you he's not.

I understand why he didn't play, just saying it's a shame that he didn't have the opportunity.

You can post positive and negative opinions all you want. Other can strongly disagree.
I strongly disagree with this statement. " The brutal truth is that Pierre squandered his senior night."
Pierre played against two really, really good inside players. His shots did not fall. A number rimmed in and out. He played a good floor game (in my opinion). 8 rebounds, 3 offensive. His defense was solid. He fouled out, but so did Pollard and a critical VCU player.
I've seen many seniors go out with less than perfect endings. The Richmond seniors this week went out in a bad way on their senior night. I am sure that happened all over the A10 this week.
It is one thing to call a player out for lack of hustle. It is another to call a player out for playing hard and not having shots fall. So I disagree that he squandered his senior night.

No worries, everyone was given juice boxes and a cookie after the game. They were all winners in my book.

The brutal truth is:
* You're sense of timing blows
* You're lack of tact is acute, so at least you've got that going for ya!
I am indeed honest, and no, I don't have to agree. In fact, I think DP will remember senior night as being the f'in tits! He's all about Team, and his team just won a share of the A-10 Championship...yup, that's the tits baby!

^^^^^ This! I guarantee DP would rather win the A10 championship in front of a crazy crowd than score 35, get a triple double and lose the game.

If Dayton happens to have VCU again (A10 Championship)... I'm hoping the coaching staff uses Pierre differently.
Need to move him outside... so Pierre can shoot over or drive around those 2 big boys from VCU. Especially if Tillman is guarding him - need to keep that guy away from the basket!

Yep...Said the same thing Saturday night...This VCU game with some length out there on defenders and bulk, exposed some weaknesses of DP as far as post play. He never looked comfortable getting defenders on his hip or having the ability to shoot over them. DP needs to have the offense run thru him to get the ball moving and whether he's out on the wing or flashing into the lane he's got to touch the ball more facing the bucket.....

He and Cooke need to find their touch from 3 again, or it's going to be a short stay in both tournaments for us.

Short A-10 Tournament Stay
may be a good thing for the Flyers to make an NCAA run. Without KP they probably will not compete for the A-10 championship at a neutral site. Rest may be more beneficial than an A-10 tourney run. They need their legs to defend.

I'd love for this team to win a game by 30 again - - -
but at the end of the day -the end of the game- as long as each of them contributes enough so that the Flyers win, I have learned to be OK with that.
actually - way more than just "OK". I've learned to love it.

I Would Not Be Surprised
to see the Freshmen get a lot of PT in the A-10 tournament. Especially John Crosby for Scoochie at PG. To me the goal of the A-10 tournament is to save the Flyer's legs for the NCAA tournament. Exhibit #1 in my argument is Kendall Pollard. The A-10 tourney will be a great opportunity for Big Steve to show the fans how far he has come in his development.
I was very impressed with his restraint on "D" against VCU and how he maintained a presence without fouling. He stayed grounded and avoided the opponent driving into his chest. Unlike a year ago this is the time for UD's depth of talent to assert itself. Look for the back-ups to make or break the Flyers in Brooklyn.

I hope the coaching staff game plans to expand the rotation, but, I just hope that doesn't come across to the team as giving up. I still believe the only thing you learn from losing is how to lose.
It's a fine line between "we're just going to go ahead and play the freshman" and "I don't care if you're a freshman or a walk on, you better do your job because I want to win this game!".

I don't like this the A10 tourney doesn't mean anything - You play to win the game!

Here's some brutal truth, success can be fleeting, enjoy it while you can.
Look at the bottom of this league:
LaSalle, Sweet 16 2013
St. Louis, Top 10 ranking 2014
George Mason, Final Four 2006
UMass, Final Four 1996
These are the bottom 4 teams in the A10.
