Ashley does a 2:07.26 and sets a new school record for the 800 meters in a preliminary heat. Misses qualifying for the finals by about half a second. This is about the 4th time she has lowered the school record in the last 90 days.

Yep.

Ashley is having an incredible season, as is the rest of the women's track team. Keep an eye on 'em, they've got a shot at winning conference this spring... and if not this year, they bring back a good majority of their talent for 2009-10.

Hi Berg - There are not too many of us that pay a lot of attention to this sport.

I think winning the outdoor title this Spring is a very long shot. That being said, the job that Steinwachs and his assistants have done for the ladies' track program is nothing short of astounding. Just a couple of years ago this was a throw-away Title IX balancing sport. No more. Adam really has the whole team focused on a goal.

What Cattran has done is just as amazing. First the coaches saw her potential to move up from the 400. With her 400 speed, and barring injury, she may well have world class potential over the next few years - i.e. - down around 2:00. I don't know if even she or her coaches know what her possibilites are. To take her PR from 2:15.55 at Findlay this past December to 2:07.26 in Boston over the weekend is unbelievable. Dropping 8 seconds and change at that level in such a short amount of time is almost unheard of. Now, we all know dropping another 8 seconds will take a lot more time, but she seems to have not only tremendous talent but just as important a real mental toughness. Best of luck to her. All that and a 4.0 in pre-med. Geesh, nobody should be that good.

"I think winning the outdoor title this Spring is a very long shot."

I agree that it's something of a pipe dream, Charlotte's sprinters continue to outclass us every year at conference. Nevertheless, you can't argue with the amount of points we've gained on them in the last three meets. I'm just saying that it's possible, whereas in years past... definitely not.

Where we're at right now is that our throwers and field performers are head and shoulders the best in the A-10. We have good runners, but just not as many good runners as Charlotte. I think with a couple more sprinters scoring points (hopefully next year's recruiting class has a couple more impact freshman) we can definitely overtake them next season.

And yes, Adam has done a tremendous job recognizing talent and putting each of the girls in positions where they can be successful. It's definitely his strong suit as a coach, from what I can tell. Also, don't forget to give credit to Ann Alyanak for doing a tremendous job with the distance team and Vaughn Davis/Tom Cope for their help with the field performers and hurdlers.

I think ex-Coach Erwin deserves some props too for really getting the ball rolling on the program. The girls all loved her and were sad to see her go.

Cattran does a 2.06:37 at Notre Dame on Saturday. That's her 6th school record in the event in about 90 days and drops another second off her PR. This is getting scary to see her drop her time this fast.

She was just off the auto bid of 2:05.00, but might squeak into the NCAA's... we'll find out tomorrow!

She is 18th on the performance list. How many do they take?

I doubt Siebenaller or Barnes make it.
