Seton Hall Pirates
Last Season: 19-13 (9-9)
Key Losses: John Garcia, Eugene Harvey
Head Coach: Kevin Willard
Projected Starting Lineup
PG: Jordan Theodore 6-0 Jr.
SG: Jeremy Hazell 6-5 Sr.
SF: Eniel Polynice 6-5 Sr.
PF: Jeff Robinson 6-6 Sr.
C: Herb Pope 6-8 Jr.
Key Reserves: Ferrakohn Hall 6-8 So. PF, Jamel Jackson 6-3 Sr. SG, Keon Lawrence 6-2 Sr. PG
Seton Hall is coming off an interesting year. The Pirates had fairly high expectations with the talent on their roster and they faired decently with a 19-13 overall record and 9-9 in the Big East before losing in the second round of the Big East tournament to Notre Dame. In a first round NIT loss to Texas Tech, Pirates big man Herb Pope was ejected and head coach Bobby Gonzalez received his seventh technical foul of the season. The very next day, Gonzalez was fired. Soon after the season, Pope fainted during an offseason conditioning workout and had to be rushed to the hospital. Kevin Willard, previously the Iona head coach, was hired as the new head coach at Seton Hall.
The future of Seton Hall basketball didn't...............................

Have to admit that it bothers me a bit to be in agreement that this is important. Have a good feeling about this one.

10-9 the Hall at 1st media TO. Pope posing a problem down low, but will he have any legs in the 2nd half?

19-16 the Hall 2nd media TO. Dayton coughs up a small lead after taking 3 terrible shots in a row followed by a CW dunk.

So far Paul has pushed the ball and fed it to a big that can't dribble, and the second time to a wing that was in no position to catch it. I'm sorry but we do not go 3 deep at point guard.

Watching Seton Hall, I keep getting the feeling that they aren't that great of a team, with the exception of Pope. I hate that we are down by 7 to them right now

18-30, I'm starting to feel for those who gobbled up Dayton +11. I do think we will come back but none of our players looks comfortable right now. This feels like the first 12 minutes of Cincy game.

And this is arguably the worst team in the Big LEast. They are really capitalizing on UD's TO's. BG cannot coach.

Shooting this badly, we have to crash the boards. We barely have any offensive boards by the sounds of things. We need to get desperate in there and make something happen.

You really don't need to crash the boards, just quit taking really bad 23 foot shots, with nobody around TO rebound. This team is well coached; zone until you beat us at it...and UD is falling for it, hook line and sinker.

Nobody seems to be giving up. Am I prohibited from saying we are playing poorly when we are down double digits to a less than stellar team? We are playing with little offensive awareness and lots of stupid turnovers.

...And Devin Oliver makes a play that absolutely fires me. He commits a weak foul on a fast break to enable a 3-point play. C'mon, man. Either foul or don't. This is D-I basketball and you made a play an 8th grader knows not to do. Grrr.

It seems like the Pirates have stolen a page out of our playbook. Sounds like they're getting a shot within about 5 seconds of getting possession. They're repeatedly beating us down the court for good looks. And without us getting good possessions, our bad shots are just fueling their offense. You'd think we'd be better at the transition defense since we play against this M.O. everyday in practice.
If we want to get back in this, we need to get better shots or win the battle on the offensive glass. Having our guards getting back on d and stopping their fast breaks would be a good start too. Let's go guys.

It sounds like the shots aren't falling and the Flyers are turning over the ball a lot. Gotta do something to get it closer by halftime. Zone defesne is the way to play ud.

I understand what you are saying, and I certainly agree that there are a lot of things that are outside the coach's control. But at what point does the "buck stop" with BG? It seems like to some posters, everything is his fault, but to others, he takes no responsibility for our play (particularly our offensive ineptitude).

I can't believe I'm saying this. Kavanaugh is playing well other that the one offensive rebound he gave up.
On the other hand CW is playing bad.

Yuck.
That's a big hole to dig out of. This team STILL has issues against zones. Big issues.

Why are we not able to attack the overextended defense? Come on. Dribble into it and draw a d amn foul.

Look, the last time I checked, UD had (2) TWO players projected in at least the 2nd round of the NBA in CW and CJ. Staten may be freshmen of the year in the A10...and you're getting thumped by SH by 14 at the half? There's no question about it in my mind, the buck stops with BG. If you can't figure out a better zone offense after 8 years it means you're either too stuborn to change or not smart enough to realize you need to change. UD is being school by SH, SETON HALL with their best player out (24ppg), another player transfering out, another starter with bad foot. You tell me? And don't even give me the 3 games in 5 days argument...its just really tired and weak. What will happen when they play the bottom feeders of the A10 on the road?

I wasn't defending myself. I'm asking why somebody like me can't point out the obvious. Some posters like yourself seem to feel the need to attack any poster who points out that we are playing poorly. Which we are. From now on, I'll be sure to spell it out explicitly so you can't deflect it personally onto me.
We are playing poorly and still, after years and with a real point guard, can't beat the zone. There are issues with this team.

At least BG is innovative. The high screen against the 2-3 zone every time down is something you don't see much.

A. Horrible Shooting
B. No Zone Offense to get decent shots.
C. Chris Wright doing his all too familiar disappearing act along with several others.
D. Still 20 minutes to try to turn it around.

Staten, Spearman and Kavs played well, the upperclassmen, not so much. Really disappointing to see poor performances by the upperclassmen on he road. BTW, what was up with Parker dribbling out the shot clock ... PASS THE BALL

This a huge hole to try to come back from, if they can do it, it will be epic. The only bright spot is Kavs.
From the way Bucky is describing it, Seton Hall is almost playing a box and one on CJ, but not exactly. Anybody who can watch care to elaborate on their zone?

Jeesh, shot 10-36 from the field, 1-10 from three.
CJ is 1-7, 1-6 from three.
CW 3-9 and no trips to the line.
SH shot 16-32 and 4-8 from three. They only outrebounded us by 1, but they have 10assists to 3 turnovers, where we're 3 assists to 6 turnovers.
If not for, gulp, Kavs this would be worse than UC.

The most obvious edge for SH in my view is their muscle. We can't keep them off the route they want to take. Can't stop the dribbler.
Then of course we just shot 29% / 11% .
Ok, we just had our bad half, maybe we can find our range the second half.

I think you kind of answered your own question. It was Winthrop...
As long as I've been a UD fan, we've always sucked on the road. Always. Wright looks like a completely different player away from the arena.

So - they are killing us inside... do you think we would try a zone. Nope.
Worst half of basketball since the Cinci game - and I didn't think I would see a repeat of that.
Oh, and we still can't play against a zone. Yeah, I know - stating the obvious. If ANYONE plays man the rest of the season agaist us, their coach should be fired for incompetence.
Love my Flyers but this is getting old quick.

This club has no where near the speed and defense we saw last year, and trying to play the same system without it just has looked ugly.

I don't know what BG and his staff do to prepare for an away game, but whatever it is, it should be changed. Whatever BG is doing, change it! They look absolutely out of their class tonight. I don't understand all of BG's emphasis on defense when in fact this time can't handle or shoot the basketball. I hope we don't go on the road in the A-10 and embarrass ourselves like this.

He's trying to get "his" shot, don't you see? Reminds me of a story where Bob Knight once came up from behind and put his hands over Neal "he choked me" Reid and said: "name me the other 4 players on your team right now?"...and Reid couldn't do it.

CJ is 1-7, 1-6 from three.
Six of his 7 shots are from three.
That's already more threes than he's taken in the previous five games. He is a team leader and needs to get to the hoop and to the line. Not chuck threes. More than half his shots need to come from 15 feet and in. When he relies on the three, it takes him out of all phases of his game. Namely rebounding, mixing it up, and getting to the line. He needs to stop shooting threes until he gets some buckets from driving.

1-10 for trey, and 28% shooting from the field.
Let's hope we can turn it around in the second half.

They aren't playing a box and one. Mostly 3-2 and 2-3 mixed up and matching up out of both. They are shading toward CJ but its not that hard to do against our zone offense where the wings basically just stand there.

I'm watching on ESPN3 (which btw...if you have Time Warner, you can register for ESPN3 right now and watch the second half on a PC). This is a standard 2-3 zone, same one BG cannot beat for the last 7 years now. Bucky needs to retire maybe; I'm not seeing anything other than standard 2-3 zone, and standard poor response from UD - pass around the perimeter and settle for a jump shot with time running out...

1-10 of three tonight....the difference between this and the winthrop game.
This team under BG has ALWAYS lived and died by three...never relying on a good gameplan.

You cant measure progress against CCSU, WCU, and Winthrop. You just dont get better playing inferior teams. Our last measuring stick was ODU. Since then, its been largely busy work.

Not sure what to say, don't see where anyone picked you out of the "many" that he referred to. Heck I could be in that group. Haven't said anythiing overly positive myself...stated that SH owned the paint at both ends of the court. I just didn't consider myself as having given up so I didn't let the comment bother me.
This team is not taking what the defense is giving them and when they do they can't make a bucket. Totally out of sync. No one so far is hitting on all cylinders and our go to guys have gone.
Lets see wha they can do in the 2nd half...at least make a game of it.

This is doubly strange considering that most of our teams haven't been that great of shooters.
The zone or pack it in defense is consistently what kills this team and BG rarely has an answer for it. I will never know why other coaches don't just do this to us all day long. No need to switch defenses against us. We're not going to figure it out in the game. We haven't figured it out in 7 years.
